I use an aluminum bat in tourney play and will drive the middle with a good conscience. It's the fastest way thru the infield. It should never be off limits for a hitter. If you want to keep hitters from driving the middle, play a five man. This is tournament ball, not rec lge!

pricer.miken the middle should always be open, now it shouldn't be a place for vengeance as some of these people will say will happen if they can't hit hrs.i hit middle tho not at the pitcher, this weekend i played against the kids and got a ball about 5' away from the pitcher,he gave me a little look, and i told him sorry wasn't supposed to be that close, also told him i didn't want to be out as he did have a decent glove on the mound.i think the only reason for the look, was earlier in the game one of my teammates got the first pitcher for them in the ankle and he had to leave.now we were a team from our senior league playing against the kids, and i was pitching at the time, but they didn't go after me on purpose or anything,we kept it all civil.just feel we can't close down the middle,we do it in one league i play in,and i do pitch and i hate the rule.also if you close down the middle, your gonna get a pitcher or 2 that will relax and not be ready to defend himself, thinking that there will not be balls hit back at him, that is a bad mistake.

iam not saying hitting the middle is bad i think there is times when it is purposely when it is done and a batter says hey sorry or it was not done intenniolly that is one thing but you know and you can tell when it is not we as hitters need to make sure that we are not looking there some older pitchers could

I hope that no one takes this too hard but I do not want someone to apologize to me for hitting the middle. I will not do so if I hit the middle! I do not apologize to the SS if I hit it at him. I am trying to get a hit!!! The middle is a part of the game!!

Mad dog, was that a 52 core ball that hit the kid in the ankle that caused him to leave the game?

i try to get people to hit middle in certain situations, easy
inning ending double play.
if you pitch you have to be ready at all times to catch ball or get out of way if you feel ball may seriously injure you.if some one says something hand them the ball and let them try it. i would quit pitching if net or out.

rtaven, yep do the same thing, even tho i mostly pitch against the kids.they think they can get one over on the old guy by going middle, till it ends up in a DP....DOH,LOL..... dumb kids.the other is the flat fastball in on their hands......they'll swing and most of the time pull it foul for a 3rd strike K.........

Nothing wrong with hitting middle so long as your not trying to hit the pitcher. Why would one give up hitting to 33% of the field?

I pitch and people sometimes hit the middle and out of courtesy most say "sorry pitch" on their way to first or back to the dugout. I usually smile and say "my sister hits harder than that". The game is fun and I donot know of anyone trying to hurt anyone. The middle is part of the game. Common courtesy is each person's own decision. Also, if one has 2 strikes and the pitch is low and away - guess what? Be prepared.
