| Sept. 13 Mario Men's 50 451 posts | I played in a local round robin tourney last saturday night. The HR's are negotiable, so we played 3 games at 2 and 1 up. We had 6 guys from our 50 Major plus team and a few young players who were pretty good. We won the first three games fairly easy, then this last team wanted to play us with unlimited HR's and no time limit. Wow was that fun. It brought back a whole bumch of memories. I still think that is the way its supposed to be played. We short gamed them 51-31 after 5 innings. I'll give them credit, they were all in their mid 20's and they wanted to see how they would fare aginst us old guys. If they keep that attitude they will continue to get better. |
| Sept. 13 17Black Men's 60 414 posts | Last year my Over 50 team played in a 4th of July "open" tourney with all younger teams, and we didn't do very well. It was a fundraiser for a local charity about 50 miles from our home base. Unlimited HR's, lots of teams with guys in 20's and early 30's. First of all, none of us had any legal bats (we all have Miken U-II's that were not USSSA sanctioned) so we went out and bought a legal Miken Freak that wasn't broke in and took it right out of the box LOL. (and all shared it)----it didn't have any pop for being $275 bucks, but again it wasn't broke in either. We were getting run ruled pretty bad in our 1st game and the team we were playing told the ump we could use our regular bats-----that lasted one inning as balls were sailing to new uncharted destinations at the ball park, and almost took out a surprised 3rd baseman and shortstop. The umps put a stop to that right away. (A) it proved we belong playing with guys our own age (B) also shows the difference we have playing with 1.21++ bats and why they are illegal in other associations. (C) a reason why if the "pop" in our bats scares younger players who aren't used to it, then I also understand why some seniors have always had issues too. (D) OK it is fun to hit with em. |

| Sept. 13 DCPete 409 posts | Unfortunately a lot of the young kids bats are now shaved, juiced and/or rolled so they may be just as hot, or hotter than Senior bats. In fact, would love to know from any expert on this board, how the shaved/juiced/rolled U-trip bats compare to Senior bats? And would really like to know which is more dangerous: a 52/275 ball hit with a shaved U-trip bat or a 44/375 ball hit with a legal ASA bat? |
| Sept. 13 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | DCPete,the 52 ball was design specifically to lesson the danger to the fielder,so it doesn't matter what bat you use,52 you get a bruise,44 you get a broken bone or a deep bruise and big lump.it was also design to even up all bats ASA- SENIOR BATS,and also the shaved ones.from all the talk on the softball boards a shaved bat is equal to a senior,maybe a tad hotter.i don't have any first hand knowledge to give ya an opinion on shaved bats. i'm with you mario,don't need the special bats.i get to play in different assoc here so need to have their bats,and do quite well with them,also using the 52 ball. |
| Sept. 14 Webbie25 Men's 70 2414 posts | What a great thread. 17Black-we do play league with USSSA bats and we have a couple Freaks that have really gotten broken in and I can barely tell the difference from my U2. There is a huge difference between out of the wrapper and fully broken in which probably took 200-250 hits. DCPete-one of my friends, thebull, recently got a hold of a shaved white Miken bat and we tried it out just to see what the hype was all about. We did discuss it at length in the thread about altered bats about 1-2 months ago. He said he didn't even have time to duck behind the screen when I hit a line drive anywhere near the middle-said it was scary. You could mishit a ball 350 plus. And this was not shaved nearly as much as it could have been. We could do in Seniors with a 'measured' step back. Alloy bats like the Orange Crush, or the EST and 47/525 balls was a great combo before the composites. The game would still be very lively. Having said that, I hit back to back 400 footers in league yesterday---I WILL miss that if they do ever cut it back. |
| Sept. 14 Mario Men's 50 451 posts | I purchased a Reebok Melee off of Anaconda Sports for $99 and it now has about 8-900 swings on it and I believe its almost as hot as my Reebok senior bat. I have hit with both of them and there is probably only 10 -20 feet difference in the distance the balls are traveling. Can't beat it for bating practice. This is my second one, the first one ended up braking after about 1200 swings. Thats pretty good for the money. Those young kids last saturday night were saying my bat was shaved. Just goes to show you that someone will always say something about something they know nothing about. |

| Sept. 14 surf88 Men's 65 1000 posts | We recently played in a small tournament here in Telluride. It will be a BIG tournament next year. We allowed any bat as long as it was not altered (visually altered, how could we tell). This year was all young bucks but next year we will have a young division and a senior division. Had a ton of fun and my Reebok 28EL was on fire. The 20 year olds had a great time too. See all you guys in Phoenix. We'll have a hitting cage at our tent. Surf |
| Sept. 15 DCPete 409 posts | Webbie; agreed an original, fully broken-in Freak (500+ hits)can hit with an Ultra 2 with the only difference probably being the Ultra's bigger/more forgiving sweet spot. Don't have any 1st-hand knowledge of shaved bats but they must be Super Hot/Ultra-like or they wouldn't be advertised all over E-Bay. And unfortunately, that would probably be the main problem if we ever did cut back, ie the shaving & juicing would greatly increase. Used to think that using Senior bats keeps players from wanting to use altered bats was just an excuse, but now realize it's a valid argument plus when a player comes to the plate with an Ultra the fielders at least know what to expect. So until/unless they develop tamper-proof bats, the status quo of Ultras & Combats is no doubt better than the rampant shaving/juicing/whatever-else alternative. |
