Time limit
SSUSA staff, do you keep any records of the percentage of games that do not get all of the innings in because of time limit?

We don't keep any statistics on the actual percentages. However, after time limits were increased last season from 60 to 65 minutes (plus the open inning) for pool play and from 65 to 70 minutes for bracket play, we noticed a significant increase in the number of 7-inning games. Although we don't keep 'hard data' on that, it would be a reasonable estimate that over 90% of games went the full 7 innings in our tournaments last season.

The percentage of full 7-inning games appears to increase with age, principally as a function of the number of runs scored. Men's 40-Masters games would likely have had a higher percentage of shortened games, with that percentage shrinking through the 50+, 55+ and 60+ age groups. Almost all games at age 65+ and more senior divisions went the full distance.

We played in quite a few tournaments and I think there were only a couple that we didn't get all of the innings in. It would be nice to get to 100% but I the extra 5 minutes sure did help.

As you have seen in my previous posts, the 1-1 count combined with the new time limits will ensure 7 innings everytime. That's barring a 40 MPH wind blowing out which usually means increased scoring. With the 0-0 many batters take 2 stikes before swinging including about 1/2 my team and it drives me nuts. Another little noticed time waster with more pitches using the 0-0 count, is the 10-15+ pitches per game that hit the edge of the mat and shoot off to the backstop as many pitchers will waste/play with the 1st two trying to enduce the hitter to take a bad swing. In many of our Qualifers, the TDs used a 1-1 and most hitters take a wack at the 1st strike. The entire pace and energy of the game is enhanced.

I don't see any purpose for any runner/batter to touch the next base after a home run. A time waster.

cal, it won't waste much of anything. It takes just seconds to move 65', and the defensive team is not going to be ready for the next pitch any faster than that anyway.

Gary, what purpose does it serve to run to the next base?

Maybe none. My only point was it isn't really a time-waster and won't slow down the game.

Does it accomplish anything else? Probably not.

I'm shocked and amazed. Gary, you missed a perfect opportunity here. Only touching first is a deviation from perfect softball the way it used to be. We used to have to run all the way around the bases. A crack in the armor of softball perfection-it's ok to only touch first on a HR.

Gotcha!!

Mark, just shows I am not inflexible.

But right is right, and many of the rule changes just aren't. But this one is fine.

Time limits is an interesting discussion. It's very understandable that time limits are in place for league nights.
For senior tournaments I have no issue with time limits for the play-in games. For bracket games there shouldn't be time limits. Play out the 7 innings. I would put in mercy rules after 4, 5 and 6 innings.

Interesting. Most of our tournament games did go 7 innings
as I remember.
However league with a 45 min limit we only get in 5 innings
most games. Only get to bat 2 times most games. Not worth
driving 20 miles one way to play a game like that.
This year the team I play with has voted to drop league
play and move to day ball where they play 7 innings.
