I know players from your area south who have played in the league. However, this might be more miles than you would like to travel. |
| Nov. 2, 2012 Allan55 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Senior softball summit Gary19, I agree with you regarding qualifying for National tournaments in the 70's and 80's. I remember having to qualify for the National in a regional tournament. Our state also received three entries. It was not an easy road to the National. There were not teams from all the states. However, a number of states didn't have teams wanting to play in the tournament. And, yes, I played in Parma, Ohio, and Burlington, North Carolina, more than a couple of times. Those were great tournaments. I do want to add that the 50 Major tournament was the best yet. All the top teams were there, and the winner (ENR) played great. Although the tournament had some bumps in the road, this was a tournament with the best competition from the U.S. and Canada. If people remember, the USSSA isn't too far from the SSUSA. Although you had to qualify in a NIT, I remember a number of teams finishing third, fourth, and even fifth in those tournaments and receiving berths to the World tournament, since all the teams finishing above them in the standings already earned their berths. I didn't think the USSSA World tournament was nearly as difficult to qualify for as the ASA National. Stick8, Your friend is correct regarding Reno as being a place to play if you want to see great competition. The 50 and 55 M+ divisions had the majority of entrants that participated in Vegas. There was great competition and facilities this year. |

| Oct. 22, 2012 Allan55 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: LV World Tournament Discussion Garyheifner, I feel you have to let the 11th player play anywhere on the field. RIK56, I agree with you. Some teams would play a six man infield. Boston, You indicated that adding an additional player in the field would ruin the game. In my estimation, the ridiculous bats did that. Since the bats are not going away, something else needs to offset the bats. That's why an additional player was brought up. I have also suggested using balls that were not as forgiving as the rock. However, I am willing to listen to constructive comments. Gary19, You commented on the additional player being a "whacky rule change." I think the first whacky rule change occurred when senior softball allowed the bats. You know what they say...one whacky rule change leads to another. #19, You mentioned you were against using an additional player. Does that mean when you play 70's you will retire? I understand 70's use an additional player. I appreciate the constructive comments. |

I know the games went long this year...okay too long at times. However, eliminating seeding games or triple elimination games cuts into playing time. That is what most of us are here for. Remember...most of the teams didn't even make it to Saturday night. Since most players want to keep the existing rules, I would like players to consider something else. I feel adding an additional fielder would make the game more challenging. I know the pitcher would feel safer. Most teams bat everyone in seeding games or more than ten. Would teams be in favor of adding an additional fielder just for seeding games or for the entire tournament? This would reduce game times (not dramatically) and get more players involved. Getting players involved is what senior softball is all about. |

| Oct. 18, 2012 Allan55 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Home Run Rule For 50 Majors JMAC 00, I agree with you regarding "walks should be outs." That is the only way to force teams up. If teams make outs because they hit homeruns over the limit, they might think about moving up versus staying in major. This would eliminate the talk I heard regarding a 50 AAA team hitting 18(?) homeruns in a game. However, I do think the homerun rule for major should be increased to eight or nine. Seven humeruns for major to twelve homeruns for major plus in too much of a gap. Major teams have to completely re-tool to compete. Teams have indicated they don't want to break up, so move the major humerun rule closer to the major plus rule. By increasing the number of homeruns, teams would learn how to power-up and be more competitive with the major plus teams if they have to move up. |
| Oct. 12, 2012 Allan55 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Bat issue ronnied8, I heard this story two years ago. I had an Ultra, and it broke after approximately 40 cuts. My friend informed me he would take my bat, along with his (which also broke after a limited number of cuts) to Corky. He said Corky will take care of it...and gave the bats to him. When my friend and I saw Corky some time later, we asked him what was happening with the bats. We wanted to know if they would be replaced. Corky informed me that my bat would not be replaced, because I must have been swinging too hard. I thought that was interesting, because I was not under the impression he had ever seen me swing. I will also bet your bat, ronnied8, still had that nice new shine on it like my bat did. Yes, I would say you are barking up the wrong tree. Five months later, I was informed I should have called Miken direct and shipped the bat to them. Instead, I did not have a bat to ship. That was my fault for dealing with the wrong person. Good luck. I hope your story has a better ending than mine. |

This was a larger commitment than was anticipated. People were running around doing their best...and I appreciated all of it. |

I disagreed with the associations when they agreed to count homeruns as walks after reaching the limit. All divisions (AA, AAA, and Major) should have all homeruns over the limit count as outs. That is the only way to promote upward movement. |
| Oct. 10, 2012 Allan55 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: LV World Tournament Discussion I saw a number of games the past two weekends last longer than 90 minutes, each setting their respective tournaments back. I feel steps should be taken to keep games more in line with the times. However, I don't feel starting with a 1-1 count is the answer. I do feel all games (not just seeding games) being 65 minutes plus the open inning would be a start. The double elimination game should also be eliminated in tournaments with twenty or more teams. Those touranments should guarantee four games instead of five. I also feel the ball (the Rock) is too lively. Those balls were ridiculous. We already play with a bat that is better than anything we used as kids. Remember when the Titanium bats came out and games lasted well over two hours before they were pulled? Why can't we use the Trump ball? It was good in Reno in the heat and was not as forgiving as the Rock. If no adjustments are going to be made, the only other alternative is to have teams qualify by allowing a certain number of teams in each division. Don't worry...that would never happen, because that would cost the association money. |
| Oct. 2, 2012 Allan55 | Topic: Associations Discussion: future of senior softball I feel the Senior Softball Association should shoulder some of the blame for the limited number of M+ teams. Over the last few years, I have seen teams moved up only to be moved down after a year or not even a year. If a team goes 1-4 or 0-5 in a World Tournament, they should be moved down (if they have been in the division two or more years). However, I have seen a major team place third in the World Tournament...be moved up and moved down for the very next World Tournament. I have witnessed a M+ team have a .500 record one year and be moved down to major...and miss playing on Sunday by losing two one run games. That would not have been a high point for the SSUSA. I have also seen a M+ team go 3-3 at the Reno tournament this year, only to be moved down for the World Tournament even when they lost close games and beat the second place team and current Western Champ in the tournament. If a team (AA, AAA, or Major) finishes in the top three, they should be moved up for a min. of two years. If the record in the second year is not good (1-4 or 0-5) they could get dropped. If players try to stay down and play for another team, they should be evaluated. I know someone out there probably has a good idea. Please feel free to comment. |
| Aug. 22, 2012 Allan55 | Topic: Bats Discussion: Any Reviews on the UltraII USA model SPU2P I purchased a Miken Ultra 2, and it broke after approximately 50-60 cuts. This bat was good after 10-15 cuts. I called Miken and they gave me a R.A. number. I sent the bat in and they replaced it with a "W" (I believe) stamped on the end cap. The replacement bat had to be from the bad batch of Miken bats everyone has been talking about, because it took me between 90-100 cuts to break it in. Finally, with the bat broken in, I started using it in tournaments and was able to get 35-45 cuts before it cracked. What do you do if the replacement bat was bad? I would like opinions on what I should do? |

I said, "How can you move up a team that hasn't reached Sunday in a World Tournament?" If a team doesn't advance to Sunday, they are out of the top eight. I know you don't advocate moving up teams that finish lower in the World Tournament...while allowing higher finishing teams to stay in the Major division. Each year, the top TEAMS in the World should move up. I also feel performance on the field should be the deciding factor over what players a team has on paper. After all, that's why "we play the game." I agree with your factors determining a move up in the ranks to a point. Win/loss record and margin of victory are important. However, win/loss record and margin of victory against AAA teams is not valid. Major teams should beat AAA teams. And Major teams will most likely play more AAA teams than Major teams, due to the fact there are not as many Major teams. Tim indicated his record against tougher competition. It has not been impressive. I don't know of any team that would be happy getting bumped up with that record. |

However, I don't feel moving a number of major teams up (that haven't won anything) is the answer just because there aren't enough teams to play. The fix can be found in the area of which teams choose players. That means not allowing teams to pick up players from 2, 3, or 4 states and dividing the larger states in half. That would be the starting point. |

Remember, I mentioned I thought like you do. However, after playing general senior softball tournaments, I have played against teams that weren't very strong. They had difficulty scoring in double figures and really needed help. On the flipside, if you are playing in a big tournament, the spotting of runs is certainly difficult to understand. |

This does not mean giving a team an advantage. If a team scores five runs in an inning, it doesn't need any handicap help. If the team scores only three runs in an inning, they do need help and should receive only one run. The team receiving the handicap could receive no more than five total runs per game using this method. Stick8, I do understand a team needing to earn the extra run by scoring five runs (that was also my thinking). However, the team receiving the handicap might not score five runs in any inning, leading to no handicap at all. |
| July 21, 2012 Allan55 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: 5 run spot that allows 6 runs per inning to lower rated teams Bruce, I recently purchased a Miken Ultra II (black) bat that lasted 60-65 cuts. I returned it and Miken replaced it. It has been the worst Miken I have ever received. The Miken had a reputation for being hot from the start. However, I have personally experienced the break-in period first hand. I am not the only one. Another player on one of my teams experienced the same situation. It has taken me over 100 cuts to finally see a difference. I have heard other players taking up to 200 cuts to see a difference. I feel some players became impatient with the Mikens and called them dead instead of continuing with the break-in period. This happened with a single's hitter I know. However, before he returned it, he had a power hitter use it for a few days. After the power hitter took 85-100 cuts, it started to break in. I am hoping Miken has made some changes to the bat to make it more durable. Hopefully, once the Ultra is broken in, it will last much longer than previous Mikens I have owned. If the bat you receive is anything like mine, don't be shocked to have your first swings feel and sound like you hit a rock, with the ball traveling a less than desired distance.
