Dec. 31, 2011 CallaVett | Topic: Bats Discussion: Bat Care I agree with ju25, I feel that proper break-in helps to extend bat life. My break-in method is similar to ju25; I take the first 50-75 swings at about half strength, rotating the bat after each swing. I use my tee for the initial break-in because I can better control the contact point on the barrel. I broke three bats last year but to be fair one was a 4-year old Ultra II and another was a GBA (which broke on the 5th swing during break-in). The third, an ASA stamped Ultra II – NIW, I didn’t break-in prior to using it in games. It broke within 150 game swings. My gamer is a Reebok Melee Legend EL that I took my time breaking-in and is still crack-free but extremely hot. BTW – I spoke to Bill about the GBA and he said he would send me a CORE (when they are ready for release) to replace the GBA. |
Dec. 29, 2011 CallaVett | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: WHAT TEAM DOES EVERYONE PLAY FOR The Rock - 50 AA I'm looking to move up to a level more appropriate for my skill level for 2012. I would like to move up to Major, I played several tournaments last year against M/M+ and really enjoyed that level of competition. Steve |
Nov. 6, 2011 CallaVett | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: A Poll For The Power Hitters I'm not what you would consider an elite power hitter and I don't play major/major + but I hit my share of HR. I generally average around 1 HR / game (but I try to limit myself to one per game). IMO, HRs are primarily determined by technique and bat speed. I use a standard grip; dropping the pinkie off the knob. Most of my HR are to center and the left center power alley. Most of my mistake HR are to the opposite field, I rarely try to HR to the opposite field. I currently prefer the standard grip because of the additional bat control I gain. I just don't get enough BP these days to have good bat control with the overlap grip. Steve |
Oct. 16, 2011 CallaVett | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: 50AAA Teams, how many tournaments a year are you playing?? I'm on a 50AA, we have played 7 tournaments, 5 local and 2 travel. The two travel one was in Oregon and the other was in Spokane (about 5-hours away). I, also played 3 other tournaments with different teams 2 local and 1 in northern Washington (about 4-hours away). |
Oct. 15, 2011 CallaVett | Topic: Bats Discussion: reebok vis a vis ultra....a year later hombre, I have 1 GBA and owned two others. The one, I still have, is one of the early ones. It hits great and appears to be durable - still no cracks or webbing. That is why I ordered a second GBA (the one that broke). It busted on the seam, on the 5th swing, two swings later it had shark toothed. I, also have a Veteran (one of the GBA prototypes)and it is a tank. I hit it when the temp is below 60. I think it outhits my U-trip bats but not as good as the high-end senior bats. The Veteran sounds like a wood bat when you hit it. I, also had a 2-piece GBA but traded it for a Nokona glove. I was saving it as a back-up for the Ultra & Reebok. Good luck with the getting that GBA. Steve |
Oct. 15, 2011 CallaVett | Topic: Bats Discussion: reebok vis a vis ultra....a year later I like the durability I've gotten from my Reebok. I'm about the same size as hombre but a do hit the ball hard (ShaneV & JamesLG can attest to that). I'm surprised that the Reebok has out lasted my ASA stamped Ultra II. The Reebok probable has around 300-400 swings and is really hot. I have never owned a Combat, so I can't comment on their durability. I am going to add one one to my collection for next year. Plus, I have a GSC Core coming my way when Bill gets things rolling. (I broke a NIW GSC GBA in 5 swings). Steve The Rock #21 |
Oct. 14, 2011 CallaVett | Topic: Bats Discussion: reebok vis a vis ultra....a year later I bought a Reebok and a NIW Ultra II (ASA stamped) this winter, I broke the wrappers off both in May. The Ultra II started to crack in July and Reebok is still intact. I feel I get a little more distant out of the Reebok but not a lot. The graphics are just about completely gone from the Reebok. They started coming off within 10 hits. I plan on buying another Reebok this winter and don't plan on replacing the Miken. I think the Reebok has a slight edge on the Miken in both performance and durability. |

June 22, 2011 CallaVett | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: 2011 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS - Phoenix, AZ If you're planning on flying to Phoenix in October checkout Southwest Airlines. They are currently running a special for their 40th Anniversary. One way flights for $40/$80/$120, I was able to book flights for Phoenix for $160 + fees ($201 total round-trip). The special ends tomorrow (7/23). Steve |
June 21, 2011 CallaVett | Topic: Players looking to join a team Discussion: Experienced player looking for team that plays weekends. A good place to check would be at the RAC in Lacey. This weekend (Fri, Sat, & Sun) is the Northwest Nationals, some 55's will be there and most of the 50's. |
Jan. 2, 2011 CallaVett | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Batting Tee I stopped by Home Depot after church this morning and built a batting tee that is adjustable from 32" - 52". It cost me $15.20 (including tax) to build. I created a pdf with the parts list and basic build instructions. Email @ rileysd1@comcast.net if you're interested in the plans. Steve |

Jan. 1, 2011 CallaVett | Topic: Players looking to join a team Discussion: Looking for team in Sebring, FL (Highlands County) My brother turns 50 this year and is looking for a team in Sebring, Fl. I'm looking for someone to help get him started in SSB. He is primarily an outfielder but has played infield when he was younger. I appreciate any assistance you can provide. |

Dec. 20, 2010 CallaVett | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Courtesy Runner Positive & Negative Views "Strategic" YES!!! The NCAA women's softball allows for "special pinch-runners" or did you forget about that part of the game that the little girls play. |
Dec. 20, 2010 CallaVett | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Courtesy Runner Positive & Negative Views I like being able to use CR but I believe the rules could be modified to make the use of CR a strategic part of the game plan. 1. Designate 1 or 2 players as having the use of a CR. 2. Limit the use of CR to 1/inning with the exception the designated players (who always must use the CR or lose it). 3. The CR must be in the line-up. |
Dec. 16, 2010 CallaVett | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: How did you get your start in softball? I started playing softball in 1980. I was in the Air Force stationed in Germany, most of my unit was in the field for maneuvers and someone stopped by my work section looking to pick-up players for the intramural league game that night. I showed up in jeans and tennis shoes, I borrowed a glove from another guy on the team. I went 4-4 and hit a gland slam (open field – no fence), after the game the coach asked me to play on a regular basis. I went and bought a glove and cleats the next day. I didn’t hit another HR until 1984; I had the infamous warning track power until 2000 when I started to buy quality bats instead of the K-Mart specials. Steve |
