Discussion: BAN THE ULTRA

There is one misconception that is being passed on in this thread that is just being being accepted without argument. The ASA banned the ultra and ultra II early on and believe me guys, it wasnt just because of its performance. It was because its performance was undeniably better than any bat the competitors could make at the time. Miken was the "new kid" in the bat business and the incumbents couldnt make a bat to compete with it. I WAS IN THE COURT ROOM, I know what I am talking about. TODAY only Combat can compete with them and its about 7 years later. Its always about money and thats what it was about then. The insurance companies have not seen an increase in batted ball injuries, thats a money statistic. If that statistic changes then we should talk of changing. The ASA has a serious problem with bats. Senior softball does not have a bat problem.
Dirty, stop posting such ignorance.

THE WOOD,
Bob, Finally a Capitol player is admitting they hit at me. You guys scared me to death. Frank Rodriguez had more fun at my expense than ever should have been allowed. I had shortstops in those days who ran behind me because they knew you were trying to get me and they knew I couldn't catch a cold. I had Billy Steele and Larry Storti behind me, all I did was get out of the way.
However, it does scare me today. I have a recurring dream where I wake up just before the ball hits me in the face. At our age today we can hit the ball just as hard as we did when we were younger but our reflexes have slowed down. I hit the ball harder today at the age of 65 than I did at the age of 35 and Bob, you know that is true.
Bob, if you remember, in Seattle at the ASA nationals 45 over back in about 2000, your team hit me three times in the same game before I took myself out. I didnt complain, you guys just "beat me" its part of the game. But it is scary today and there have been deaths from batted balls. I only get upset when I see guys who can hit it 350 and they are mashing it up the middle. I have a couple of teammates who do that, they think its fun. The single up the middle is the easiest hit in the game but its also the least productive. Also, when you mess up, its two outs. I applaud the SS-USA staff for the intent of this rule, but its a bad rule the way it is now.
The only time I would ever hit a screamer up the middle would be if an Ohioan with the nickname "dirty" was pitching, now that could be fun.

I love this board and check it every day, However, I'm sick and tired of Dirty Gary. He jumps into every discussion just trying to tick us off. He is successful with me. I wish he lived in my town.

With so many great hitters coming into senior softball, I know its hard to pick just one. However, in 1983 I was fortunate to have been involved in holding a national home run hitting contest at San Diego State Univ's old baseball field. We had a field of the best hitters ever at the event and I saw one swing that goes down by far as the best I've ever seen, I piched the ball and Mike Macenko hit it.
Right center field was 385 and the fence was 10 ft tall. Behind the fence was a section of bleachers about 20 rows deep. Behind the bleachers was a concrete runway about 50 feet wide and it abutted the San Diego State domed basketball areana. Mike had just thrown a bit of a temper tantrum due to a protest in his last round over the bat he was using. He was really mad and he rehit his round with a bat he had just been handed and had never used before but it was made especially for him by Dave Neal. Mike hit the ball over the arena. We couldnt begin to measure it because we didnt know where it came down, but it went over the top of the dome on the fly. The balls used were Wilson Optima Gold, not a super hot ball. There was a TV crew there and they actually got footage of it. It had to be over 600 feet.
Mike, however, didn't win the event even though he had an incredible shot. Rich Plant won the event and in the finals, Rich hit 10 consecutive balls out of the baseball stadium onto the street beyond the left field wall.

Discussion: BAN THE ULTRA

If we were to ban the Ultra II or Senior combat, we would have the same problem that the ASA has with illegal bats. We DO NOT have a bat problem in senior softball. I believe I can say I am an expert in the bat world. I didnt see one illegal bat in Phoenix and I was there for the whole event. Go to any ASA event and you will see all kinds of problems including fights over illegal bats.
It aint broken!
Great job, Terry, Fran, Dave et al and also to Ridge and SPA.
Guess why the USSSA and ASA senior events are failing.

The Macenko Senior Combat has a definite break in period. You will think its broken in and it will just keep getting hotter as you swing it. Take lots of BP and you will be VERY surprised at what it will become. DO NOT judge this bat by its first 10 swings

Bill in Sac, There actually is no differece in the FL and EL notations on the bats. We started with EL and got a lot of requests for XEL. We cannot endload the bat any farther and still pass 1.20 so we changed the moniker to FL or fully loaded. I still have 5 of the new Macenko ones in stock and there wont be any more for a while. I have a few of the new Macenko senior combats. The wholesale price has increased dramatically but I will sell these few I have for $199 to get them into circulation. The sweet spot seemes to be larger with the new gear technology . The vibrations are smoother, you cant feel the impact as much. Call me if you are interested. There werent very many of them made and I'm very lucky to have a few. The name Macenko, Anaconda and senior combat just seem to go together very nicely.

Discussion: Disparaging remarks and remarkers (historical footnote)

The best thing about Senior Softball are the relationships we build with our teammates and competitors all around the world. I so look forward to national events to visit with our friends who become our antagonists on the field. Sometimes arguments become most heated with our close family than with strangers. This board is so important to all of us as a way to stay intouch with our dear friends.
We have had many very positive things come down because of this board. Lets all try to make it a springboard to improve our game and leave the fiestiness to other places.. I'll try my best as I have been one of those problems.

Discussion: RATINGS WARS

I wonder how many AA players whine when they are moved to theAAA's? I wonder how many AAA players whine when they are moved to the majors? Oh... I forgot to say "professional baseball" players, not whining pot bellies. Moving up is the goal, its not a punishment. SS-USA works diligently to make the ratings system work and it is working. If a little whining kept a team from having to move up, our game would be like the flat bellied teams. Everyone would be a AA team and everyone would be happy. The very best teams in many states are playing class E. I've heard youngsters claim to have the best team within 200 miles and be undefeated for the season. They brag and flex and spit. Everyone around them thinks they are great players and its because they tell all of the neighborhood how good they are. They however wont tell all of neighbors and co wokers that they play Class E and that all D, C , B, A, AA, AAA and major teams can clean their clock. Our game is getting to be the same thing. SS-USA is working hard to make the system work. Is it perfect? NO. But go play and prove to yourselves that the love of the game is playing, whether you win or lose is secondary. Play the best you can and you are a winner. OR then you can just take your ball and go home and pout. I wonder how many teams lose 9 or 10 games in row and then whine when the rating committee lowers heir classification? Duke and Ken, get over it and be a competitor again. Every game has a winner and a loser. Lose too much go down, win too much go up. It aint rocket science but SS-USA must be doing it right as last year over 300 teams showed up for the World Championships in Phoenix and more will be there this year. Some of you whiners will pass on the ultimate Senior Softball experience because your panties are too thight. We will miss you and you will just miss out. Its your choice, but two things are sure in this life, TAXES and DEATH. When death comes, you've played your last game and you whiners will miss what could possibly be your last great accomplishment. The game not played hurts more than the game that was played hard and was lost.

Discussion: RATINGS WARS

I akways think it interesting to listen to the biggest whiners when it comes to ratings. We have four classifications. That means that AVERAGE is about halfway between AAA and major. There is no way a team that is rated as AAA tells their wives, co workers, neighbors or friends that they are below average players. Just the opposite. They brag about how good they are and then complain if they have to play any team that is rated as possibly above average. A team moved to Major should be proud to be considered slightly above average...but no....they just whine and complain because now they cant beat up on below average players. If you dont want to compete, why even go on this board. There's no CRYING in baseball. Grow up, stand tall and play the best you can.

Discussion: 2010 Grandfathered bats

BigLou, I am going to try and answer your question without taking up a whole lot of time. I havent posted much in the past about this subject but will try to inform some of youu who are interested.
When ASA or any ass'n puts their stamp of approval on a bat, they are in essence guaranteeing that it meets their standards. They take money for doing that. When an assn and a manufacturer get crossways and the assn bans a bat, its the consumer who loses, not the assn or bat co.
I have been in the courtroom on this very issue.
"Your honor, I paid $300 for this bat and it has the ASA stamp of approval. I relied on the validity of that stamp. I went out to the park and the ASA would not allow me to use it. Now, your Honor, I dont care about the argument between the ASA and Miken. I am asking you to either make them give me my money back or make them allow me to use the bat.'
That is a wininng argument in court and is a classic example of a class action suit.
The ASA is now waiting for 3 years to ban a bat. Their argument is, we are willing to buy back the bats in question, but how much is a 3 year old composite bat that has a life expectancy of one year worth? They feel it is $10. Anyone would pay $10 for all of the old freaks or synergy II's that are not broken. Thats how they are now approaching the legal issue. Therefore, I'd say its safe to say that a bat will have to be about 3 years old before the ASA bans it in the future. If they ban one quicker, it'll be back to court. Lawyers are hungry these days and it would be another winable case.
Hope this helps in a small way.

This thread is about the TASK FORCE and its a terrific idea. NO ONE....NO ONE.....not SS-USA...NOT TRUMP...NOT TRUMPBALL. NO ONE....has proposed a new ball or new bat standards. Please go somewhere else if you want to rattle on about new ball standards, this is the wrong place.
The Major Plus program needs to be taken to a new level and this is where it can happen.

Discussion: SSUSA Announces Major-Plus Task Force

The way I like to explain this is as follows.
Take a basketball and a shot put and drop them on a concrete floor. The basketball bounces and the shot put wont. Same two balls and you drop them on a trampoline, Shot put bounces and the basketball wont. You have to have complimentary surfaces.
The old T4000, TN Poly, Hot dots, Steeles Hard balls all have very high COR and very low compression. They would really travel off of the old solid bombats but if you hit them with todays high tech bats, they go no where. Its like bouncing a basketball on the trampoline.
COR measures bounce and pounds measures hardness. With todays very soft high tech bats the ball travels best with a very high compression ball regardless of its COR.
Kevin is the genius with this kind of stuff and all of you just need to listen to what he is saying. If you argue with him you show all of us that you have a very hard (high compression) head. Open your ears and learn something that you can pass on and become knowledgeable about. Argue and you are one of those very loud voices that we have so many of in the world of softball that passes on very wrong information.
Back on the subject. HOORAY for SS-USA to listen to the Major players and get our game to way the top players want it to be. Yes, it will cost more to get it right but the game was never meant to be in minutes, it was meant to be in innings. Hitting a ball out of sight is good, its what we worked all of our lives to be able to do. Calling it an out is against all of the rules we grew up with. Getting the equipment and rules in correct alignmet is what we are all hoping for. Thank you, Terry for listening.
