RENO WEATHER
Look like we could be in for some bad weather for Rock-N-Reno. What will the SSUSA do to inform us.

All "Play/No-play" decisions are made AT GAME TIME AT THE FIELDS OF PLAY ... We do have a tournament recovery plan to put in place in the event adverse weather actually affects play ... See SSUSA Rulebook §10.1(1) on page 54 ...

Just thinking? What about those that travel quite far to get there and have hotel reservations and fuel expence, then don't play. Thats kind of rough

We, too, are concerned with economic issues, but not to the degree of cancelling an event on a possibility of a little rain ... We've never had a complete rain-out of this event in 20+ years ... The long range (rarely very accurate) weather forecasts we are seeing now show the possibility for Friday 5/22 being "65° / Cloudy with a touch of rain" and Saturday 5/23 being "71° / Some sun with a shower" ... No rain in the forecasts until Thursday 5/28 (82° / An afternoon shower) and Friday 5/29 (80° / Mostly cloudy with a t-storm), and none thereafter ...

For example, Golden Eagle was ready for play within 20 minutes following a serious mid-week thunderstorm a few years ago ... The weekend your team plays is not restricted by Local League play ... We can theoretically play as long as it takes to recover any adverse weather affects ... Every T.D. has, at some time in their career, mistakenly pulled the plug on an event based on a faulty weather forecast ... That's why we have the "AT GAME TIME AT THE FIELDS OF PLAY" policy ... It has served our players quite well ... Good luck!

deep14, don't ove-worry about a long range weather forecast. Nevada is a rather dry state and being rained out is very unlikely. A few examples:

One year, an early afternoon thunderstorm blew through. Play stopped. We were at Golden Eagle that year (artificial turf). The on-site restaurant was jammed as everybody took advantage of the rain delay to grab some lunch. A buddy and I went to get some food offsite (closest place with reasonable prices is several miles away). When we returned, our manager was yelling at us! SSUSA had shortened games to 5 innings, the fields dried quickly, and our team was up. The coach put us at the bottom of the batting order so we ran out to hit in our tennis shoes! No problem catching up games for the tournament.

Another year, I am standing on third in my shorts and I realize it is sleeting! I'm thinking "what is this?!" A cold front came through with little moisture, but enough! Next batter hits the ball and I take off for home and warmth in the dugout! Reno is several thousand feet high, so rain can often be snow. No game was delayed or canceled because of light sleet and we played on and the sun came out.

Before I started playing every year at Reno, they had snow one year that stayed on the ground for awhile! They played on, eventually paused because of slippery conditions, waited for the sun to come out, snow melted, game on!

So not getting in your games is very unlikely at Reno. You are in more danger of having to play in 90 degree heat some years which is a challenge for cold weather folks coming to an early tournament for them.

I've lived in the west-Albuquerque-for 37 years.I have been concerned about this for 2 weeks. One of the patterns this time of the year, is that storms come through a week apart, like clockwork. and, trend number 2 is that the weather forecasters tend to underestimate these storms in the long range and the forecast gets worse as it gets closer. They began coming through on weekends 3 weeks ago. It hasn't happened for about 3 years because of the RRR (Ridiculously Resilient Ridge-a High pressure system that would not go away) and the La Nina effect on the west, but that has reversed. We have been very wet and cool in New Mexico for a month and these are mostly the same systems that affect Reno.
Unless we see a pattern shift in the next 2 weeks, I will be prepared for cold weather play, and likely windy conditions, and possible rain/snow.
(I hate cold weather-ugh!) I hope I am wrong-with all my heart.

Omar is correct. When I first moved to Reno 19 years ago I was told "if you don't like the weather wait 10 minutes" it changes that quickly. I never put too much stock in long or even short range reports anymore because they are rarely ever accurate. For instance we were supposed to have rain all day today and I woke to blue skies. The turf at Golden Eagle can withstand a downpour if neccesary and games are rarely ever cancelled.

We are playing at Carson City, and I know that will make a difference. I also know how iffy the reports are, I was talking trends that I have followed for many years. I hope it is nice.

I think about 3 years ago we played in a snowstorm at Golden Eagle. Couldn't wait until we got upstairs to the restaurant/bar! About 8-9 years ago we played somewhere in the Reno area (before Golden Eagle was built) and it was around 100 degrees. Both on Memorial Day weekend. Anything possible!

Yeah don't you play until 2 weeks in Carson City. I wouldn't get to worried about future forecast of 2 weeks. So some of you have been worried about the weather 3 weeks prior to when you play, really 3 weeks in advance.

It's ALL my fault LeeLee50 ... I should NEVER have posted the DRAFT Game Schedules and Brackets at least two weeks ahead of each session starting date ... Too much time to "think"! ... Or not ...

Dave, my team LOVED the early posting of probable fields, seeding, and brackets. I guess this means we are a thinking team? Pretty rare with senior softball, where a boneheaded play is often termed "that was a senior moment".

Omar ... You're definitely a thinker! ... You corroborated my recollection of that mid-week drenching at Golden Eagle in the early days of the facility and the quick field recovery time that day ... It dumped so hard and so fast, you probably even saw Noah's Ark bobbing in the lake near the golf course on your way back from lunch! ... Good luck!

Noah's Ark indeed! When we returned we were greeted by a "roaring lion" of a manager! Surprisingly, we played for that manager a couple of more years (and a good manager he was—we deserved the scolding).

Wow-this site is amazing-you put up a generality about weather patterns and it becomes an indictment of the fact that Dave posted the tourney information too early.

Not too early as you say, but rather timely, giving teams time to plan. The fact that many procrastinate and do last minute plans. Sure things change, fields change but over all ther are pretty consistant for being correct as posted. It's the teams that pull out for a variety of reasons that cause most of the headaches.
There are many ways to check future 'rain' forecast for almost every place out there.
Rainouts are a possibility everywhere, and they happen. That sucks, cose wise and for time lost. Ovder the years I've had two total rainouts and a couple one days.
Depending on which way the air currents flow and even then you can self predict fairly well in advance what it will be like by looking at the forecast and watch the flow at about 10 days out of so.

Webbie, bring waders, you'll need them.....lmao Good luch there in Carson. Just hope the lower fields aren't being used or unless they repaired them.

Webbie,

I believe Dave was being sarcastic. Dave is well aware that I was making a joke about the fact that, guys would look at weather forecast 3 weeks in advance for Reno. I guess living in Norcal, I am aware of the spontaneous weather changes that occur in Reno. As many of us know how it rained and snowed on us about 4 years ago but we continued to play at G.E. The weather dropped to 32 degrees.

I never put too much stock into advance forcasts. After all they are the same people using the same computer modeling that want you to believe in global warming and we all know what that's about. They want you to believe they know whats going to happen 20 years from now and they can't even get tomorrows weather correct.....

Lee lee, I also had my tongue squarely in my cheek. I give Dave a hard time all the time but think he does a great job. I still think it will be unsettled that weekend.

Let's see... Weather mans odds of being right on his forecast are around 50-50.
Or put another way... (I will start the fun) it's better odds than..

My first ten...

1) Senior umpires being ably to see and call correctly, what happens in the outfield.

2) Senior infielders. fielding percentages

3) Senior pitchers throwing a strike

4) Senior players finishing a tournament without injury

5) Taits not posting on a thread

6) Leelee being tall enough to ride all the rides at Disneyland

7) Mango not posting on a thread about breaking up or handicapping Plus teams

8) Alan not posting when someone is looking for bat info

9) Einstein posting on this board again

10) me being in the right uniform or taking home team

We may have the pattern shift. The pattern did hold through this weekend with cool and rainy weather in Reno, but the 10 day appears to show this as the last storm-which gives a nice forecast for Reno! Yeah!
