not sure who won, alls i know we had some very poor umping.also when can a home team lose by the mercy rule and not be given a chance to make up the diff in their bottom of the inning(no open inning was allowed).this is BS.they had a 5 run per inning limit and told us that we couldn't get enough runs to stay in the game since it wasn't the open inning.was not very happy in the way this tourney was run.we should have had at least a chance to get under the the mercy rule limit, also first time i ever played with run limits that had a mercy rule, total BS.

Are you saying that a mercy rule was in effect along with the 5 run per inning rule?
That's absurd.

Correct me if I am wrong, but there is nothing unusual about having a 5 run per inning rule and a mercy rule. If it is not the open inning and you are down by 12 or 15, it's over baby! You are run ruled!

The five run rule, mercy rule and time limit were not meant to be used together. This is softball and no time limit should be used if a five run limit is used. You should always have an unlimited inning with a chance to win a game even if you are behind by 25 runs. This use of 5 run innings, mercy rule and time limits are tools used by tournament directors to shorten the game. any tournament director that uses this policy should be removed and declared an idiot for life then put in charg of a sport with a clock.

dbax are u really that dumb,or what.we didn't even get to hit in the 5th inning, that is total BS as i said before.we had an inning that we could have scored more than the the 5 runs and it might have made a difference, but we were limited to 5.now all i'm saying is we should have been allowed to try and make up the diff in our last at bat.we were down by more than12 to start the inning and the vistors were allowed to bat,why weren't we allowed to make up the diff to bring it under the mercy rule in the bottom half of the inning is all i'm asking.with the 5 run rule per inning and a mercy rule that is not sat.
thanks for your comment JTS2

correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the last inning, the open inning, wether it's the 5th, 6th or 7th inning and the home team should bat last ?

Most of the responders here are not quite understanding the situation.
I think i do. Let me know if i do understand it correctly.
The opposing team hitting in the top of the 5th inning and the score is in there favor to the point that even if you bat in the bottom of the 5th inning, keeping in mind that the most runs they will let you score in the bottom of the 5th would be 5, and that 5 runs would still leave you in the mercy rule position that techincally the game is over anyway and why even let you bat.
That is the dumbest combination of rules i have ever heard of in slow pitch softball.
That is just a way to get the game over even faster then normal.
5 run innings is not real softball to me to begin with let alone turn the game into something like this.
This is what happens when people who know very little about real softball start changing rules that have worked for a long long time.
Sorry to hear you guys got a raw deal like that.

Here is the rules used with the max runs allowed in an inning. Usually the last inning is an open inning. The way they determine if is the last inning when only 4, 5 or 6 inning have been played, is when time runs out, you finish that inning and play one more. In that last inning you can score as many runs as you can.
I have never seen this played with a mercy rule.

Why don't all these associations just let us play softball. All these stupid rules are running good people out of the sport.

Thanks for attacking me personally Mad Dog! I'm not saying that it is right or wrong, only that the 5 run limit and mercy rule have been used together before and it is not unusual.

Dbax, please forgive mad dog, for he forgot where he buried his bone. I am sure he meant no harm. Just not very good with English.
Plus evidently his team did not score much.

dbax didn't mean it as real personal attack but when u get to hit 4 inning only with the 5 run rule its a little ridcules to have a mercy rule.we had a good inning going early in the game only to be cut off at 5.yes we went up and down with our hitting that game, the team we played didn't.my complaint is that we didn't get the chance to pull us up from the mercy rule.every other tourney i've played would tell you that you needed so many runs to stay in regardless of inning run limitations(aka catch-up rule).mk when the other team batted in the top of the 4th they already had a lead that would keep them in the mercy situation, why did they get to bat?just venting guys, this is some of the things that need to be addressed by org's when they do tourney's.

Like I said above, I understand your point and it is valid. I was just pointing out it is not unusual.

dbax not sure what u mean is not unusual, all we wanted was to hit in our bottom half, they let the visitors bat in the top half even tho they had a lead big enough than to mercy rule us,they only scored 1 or 2 runs in the top half so it wasn't that inning that gave them the runs they needed, they already had them,by the way say hi to george for me.
