| Aug. 22 SSUSA Staff 3505 posts | In SSUSA sanctioned events, there may have been an out, but it's not an automatic call. If in the umpire's judgment, carrying the bat all the way through 1st base created a risk of injury (primary concern) or interference of the first baseman (secondary concern), an out call for interference would be appropriate. SSUSA has no requirement that the batter-runner drop the bat otherwise. This is a judgment call not subject to appeal or protest. |

| Aug. 22 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | well don't know for decades,but do know it hasn't been a rule for ASA(to drop the bat) for at least few years now and can't recall it ever being one,as long as you don't pose a threat to any fielder with it,you can carry it all the way around the bases.how is carrying a bat dumbing down the game????? |

| Aug. 22 stick8 1992 posts | SSUSA Staff, since I'm umpiring the SSUSA Northern Regionals in Lansing this coming weekend I need to fully digest this. I can understand the judgement of the umpire where the batter runner carrying his to first base can be a threat to injure and cause interference to the first baseman and thus should be called out. If the umpire deems no threat of injury or interference are you saying that the batter runner does not have to drop the bat before going thru first base? |

I'll be at the Manager's Meeting Thursday evening and at the East Lansing Complex all four tourney days ... Would be happy to discuss this in person ... I'm sure I see over a 1,000 games as season as a Director, and this occurs less than a handful of times per year in my experience ... While I personally believe the batter-runner SHOULD drop the bat, we have no formal Rulebook based requirement that (s)he do so ... Maybe a 5-second reminder to the Managers at the pre-game conference solves this in advance ... DAVE |

Your right in thaty it probably happens once or twice a year but for some reason weird stuff happens in the games I umpire. Maybe it's some form of karma? |

| Aug. 23 Omar Khayyam 1357 posts | This point came up in our league play about 7 years ago. A batter carried the bat all the way to second base. A check of the ASA Bible showed that it was legal! Since then, we have never called it an out. WHY a batter would do that is incomprehensible, but we do, in fact, have a couple of guys who have this weird habit. Personally, I'd rather have the bat carried around than dropped way down the line to first where I, as a pitcher, do not expect it to be. |
