July 5, 2011 Dale	Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: why do we need seeding games I've contended for years (to all associations) that if seeding games are to be played, then they should mean something. I've suggested to SPA and SSUSA that the higher seed should be home team (or have that option)throughout the double elimination phase of the tournament. From my experience home team is especially advantageous as the tournament progresses. This suggestion, to date, has fallen on deaf ears.

Also, I have not seen the results from the Eastern Nationals in Raleigh on August 4 - 9. California results are posted the next day.
July 2, 2009 Dale	Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: General feelings/discussion/thoughts Whether you like the PPR or not, it is not well defined for the umpire. Something as controversial as this should be a 'black or white' call, much like the strike mat that we use. I'm not necessarily condoning the rule, as the 'middle' has always been considered part of the playing field. However a simple way to enforce this (at least for this year....things do change overnight) and to add protection to the pitcher, is to give the pitcher, especially a mobile, reflexive one, a bigger advantage. IMO, ANY line drive, and I repeat ANY line drive that a pitcher can get his glove on anywhere on the field (not restricted to a pitcher;'s box)is a DBO. This might eliminate some double plays on line drives caught by the pitcher, but would not eliminate DP attempts on ground balls. This rule would certainly discourage hitting the middle against agile pitchers. Hear me when I say, I'm neither campaigning for or against the rule, just stating that if it is a rule, it should have some teeth and some clarity. I may be missing a big point somewhere, but would this not allow the middle to still be live, but also discourage 'pot shots' at the pitcher (which I know no Senior would do), while at the same time rewarding the pitcher for his defensive finesse? I know some purists would argue too many changes already, for which I agree, but, if the changes are being made, at least allow there to be standards by which it can be enforced.

Oct. 24, 2008 Dale	Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Pitcher Protection Rule One last comment/suggestion and then I'm outta here..... Lots of discussion on this board has centered around bats, balls, major/major+ team particiapation and team ratings. Seems to me this could all be cleared up with one very simple solution. Let the major/major+ teams hit the 'Senior' bats (as it is near unanimous in this classification to use this equipment). Teams that want to classify as AA/AAA cannot use this equipment. That could serve to increase participation in the M/M+ division and reduce the number of teams that 'sandbag'. (Your word, not mine) to compete/win in the lower division. The biggest complaint from lower level teams are that M/M+ players are playing with AA/AAA teams. My last $.02.

Bruce says switching to the ASA or U-trip bats would breed 'cheaters'. He plays ball with the major/major+ teams, so why do they need to cheat? So much $$$ has been invested in 'Senior' equipment that it's probably not gonna change, but, why not, if it's safety that 'Seniors' are concerned with. It's just not logical that 'Senior' bats get hotter as our reaction time lessens. Paco, we'll get hammered on this, but, I'm with you

Feb. 4, 2008 Dale	Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Major Plus - unlimited HR's Audie Played a little baseball with and against a couple of '69 Jackson grads ,Red Untemeyer, Mike Sutterfield and a catcher named Moseley. (don't remember his 1st name). I hadn't thought about them in a long time. Don't know that there would be great interest in a wooden bat league, but if that's what they told us to use, I'd be there. Thanks for the invitation to Jax. I'd love to be a part of that, but, I'll make it another time. Dale
Feb. 4, 2008 Dale	Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Major Plus - unlimited HR's I started this mess, so I guess I should end it, or at least, hopefully, soothe some ruffled feathers. We all love this game......We play in the division we play because we feel it suits our game best. I'm a AAA player, always have been, always will be. I love the way the game is played at that level. I had no business sticking my nose where it didn't belong. You guys (Major +) play at the highest level and deservedly so. Of course, my suggestion to play Home Run Derby was just meant to stir things up. None of us, especially you Major + guys, want to boil your game down to a few swings of the bat to determine the outcome. I've followed this thread this weekend and watched you guys rally support for your own league, which would be a great idea. If you re-read my opening sentence, you'll see that I was advocating for unlimited HR's and borders for you, so that you could have more teams. I play mostly in the South and even our AAA tournaments seldom have more than 6 teams. Most of which are the same teams each tournament. I went to High School and played High School baseball in Jacksonville, Florida (Terry Parker, Class of '69) and followed the Warren Motors, Starke Green Machine teams of that era. I still have family there and get down there a couple of times a year. I wish I could make it to your Spring Training so you all could crucify me in person. Great softball is still played there (all ages). I moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1970 and have been here ever since. Hollis boys, you made your point, loud and clear and I respect you for your stance. To even suggest that you guys were less than total athletes (although I didn't actually say that) is very shortsighted on my part. Please accept my apology for any of my statements that may have suggested otherwise. I call myself a Christian and try to live that example. I couldn't walk away from this thread without making things right. I'd like to shake hands with you guys at tournaments this year. You all probably don't know me, but I know most of you. Feb. 1, 2008 Dale	Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Major Plus - unlimited HR's If your Major Plus team was allowed unlimited HR's, with unlimited borders and was allowed to corral the best talent you could find with the best sponsors in your area, would there be any reason not to just play 5 on 5 Home Run Derby? That could be the entire tournament. The talent would be spread out over more teams, the safety of the pitcher would not be an issue, time limits would not be a factor, use whatever ball and bat you wish. This is basically what you all want. Your game is 90% hitting. The other 10% (baserunning (why take an extra base when the next guy is gonna blast one 350'), defense (there are guys at that level who can really play defense, and defensive plays can certainly change the outcome, but why bother, save it for offense), pitching (Einstein, you could still make a difference in this game with your style) Have 5 of the best long ballers on each team. If you don't hit it out of the park, it's an out. Each team gets three outs and then swap sides. 7 innings, add up the HR's and congrats to the HR champs for that day. You can play Double elimination, just like the guys who play REAL SLOWPITCH SOFTBALL. I know it's not softball, but the way you guys want to play the game is not the way the game was meant to be played either. You all have heard of 5-tool players: 1. Hit for power 2. Hit for average 3. Run 4. Throw 5. Field Most of you are probably saying, who is this 'tool'? You are entitled to say that, I can take it. But, these are my thoughts as I read this board daily, listening to the rants about bats, balls, borders and other minutiae. This all began when new associations began to spring up. I'm not sold on strictly ASA, but that's all there was when we played 30 or so years ago. Now all these independent associations are wanting to please everyone with there own 'tweaks' to the game that we played as 20 somethings and will continue to play until they cart us off the field. I know that I would play if they went back to wooden, alumimun or hickory bats and so would most of you, if that was the only alternative. Whew!!! I feel better!!! Thanks for allowing me to let off some steam that has been building over the weeks. I guess I just have cabin fever. Need some softball......
Jan. 13, 2008 Dale	Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: What Would You Change - Other Items It seems to me that all the 'hot button' discussion about boundaries, player/team reclassification, HR limits could be solved by simply allowing teams to classify themselves. Hold each classification to the following: AA- 0 or 1 homerun, then an out AAA- 2 or 3 homeruns, then an out Major - 5-7 homeruns, then an out Major+ - unlimited These are maximum or minimums for each division, Determined by the Summit or maybe each individual Tournament Director. Allow Major+ and maybe even Major teams to recuit nationwide. I truly believe that if HR limits were capped, and exceeding that limit resulted in an out, then there would be fewer teams playing out of their division (sandbagging, as you call it). Teams and players could play where they felt they could compete and not be made to 'move up' in classification simply by winning a tournament. It seems from the majority of posts on this board that players and especially pitchers don't think that hitting the middle needs to be addressed. I say this because that always seems to be the first 'knee jerk' to any post calling for an out after reaching the HR limit. It seems simple enough, but no Senior Association wants to take this stand. It would seem to take a lot of the current guesswork out of the Summits hands (i.e., rating players and teams). Adhere to the ASA bat list and let the big boys 'duke it out' with their altered bats..... Stay with 1-1 count..... Limit courtesy runners to 2/inning and only allow them for the runners before the 1st pitch is thrown to the next batter... Give T-shirts for All-T teams. Bag the rings....... 99% of you guys (and gals) would play this game for donuts(or bagels) and pay your own way just to continue playing a game we love with guys that are our best friends. We all like a little recognition for our efforts. Have your name announced at the tournament site. The Senior Softball News is good about giving recognition to All-T's. Blow up the article and post it on your website. I know I'm sounding a little facetious now, but we guys are Senior Citizens. We've had our time in the sun. Play for the fun of it. But, play to win..... I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!!
