Discussion: Does the weight of the bat matter?

Hi Bruce

I don't know much about all the formulas and physics some of the guys post on this site. I do know the following. I have been swinging a U2 since it first came out. I can't get a ball to the warning track with a 27 or 28 oz. I can hit around 20 or so Hrs a season with a 29 oz. At 64 yrs. old now, I don't have the total body strength I had 3 years ago. I do weight train 6 days a week and will continue to use a 29 as long as I can feel good bat speed. Now, to confuse this question some more, I can't hit a HR with a 30 oz. I have tried. I guess my body is geared into a 29.

Discussion: TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS 2008 - Roster Guidelines

I agree that the TOC should be in the same year. My team qualified last year and being a Chicago based team, we hadn't played a game in over 2 1/2 months prior to the event. We were rusty and it was no suprise that a Florida based team won our division.

I would also like to play in the TOC. However, my team didn't do the job and qualify. Unless you have found a clever way around it, I believe that you have to have been on the roster when a team won an event to qualify. You would be an illegal player.

Discussion: Is this the most brain dead player in the world????

At the winter worlds in Ft. Meyers, I talked to a guy who said a 3rd baseman was playing 15 feet + in FRONT of 3rd base. To me, he was obviously trying to intimidate you to hit somewhere else. Would you hit somewhere else or would you take that inside pitch and drive one through his sternum?????

Discussion: ASA to change mound distance

If they go to a 15' arc in senior ball, it would be best to take the plate out as a strike. I played in a 14" league this year with unlimited arc. Unless you are an accomplished walk up hitter (shuffle step}, you will find it very difficult to defend the plate and mat on a 15' pitch. I also believe that the bitching as to whether it is 15' or 17' + would be endless. I personally can hit a mat at both a 15' or 30' + unlimited arc. High arc softball can be very low scoring and very boring.

Discussion: What do you think about a 10' arc.

Several of our pitchers are under 6' tall. They thrive on working the arc from 6' to the full 12'. In the last two world tournies, the umps rarely let a pitch go more than 3-4' over their heads without calling illegal. Even as a batter, it is harder to load up and hit with all the inconsistancy. If we had 10' on the high side, the umps might be able to better call the game if they learn to at least judge what is 4' over the average pitchers head of which I think most pitchers seem to be around 6' over smaller. That extra 2' for a 12' arc seems to baffle most umps and causes a lot of bitching when or when not called.

A 4' arc would be close to fast pitch. There isn't an ump in the know universe who knows what a 12' arc is. At the winter worlds our pitcher is about 5'10". Anything above 3' over his head was called illegal by all umps. He still had at least 3' to work with. I would almost like to see the arc reduced to 10' on the high side. The ump shold be able to judge 3' or so over most pitchers head.

Discussion: HR shaggers?

An additional thought on this topic showed up again at the winter worlds. Just about every team, including mine, was quick to get HR balls or foul balls. Reason-each game started with a new game ball and maybe one OK backup. After that, we had to use game balls that had been through the early dew sweep games or used in mutiple games. They were like hitting a shot put. It was vital to get a good ball back in the game.

Discussion: a new home run rule

I have thought about this a lot. I was for one HR and then outs in AA so that if a player does hit one on the screws he doesn't get penalized, However, that has changed. With so many legit AAA or higher players sneaking into AA, a HR should be an out. Let AA be what it was designed for.
For AAA, I like the 1-up and singles rule. It would still allow for the HR to be a real factor. For the majors and major +, let them hit all they want. That should ensure that all the guys that want to huff and puff and blow the house down can indeed do that. If you have unlimited HRs, I think there should be a rule that the batting team must have a shagger outside the fence. If you don't, you will run out of balls quickly and you will never get "7" innings in.

Discussion: Has the role of the Ultra 2 changed????

As you all know, I am a supporter of the U2 and think it makes the game exciting. I usually play catcher and watch every batter swing. I believe Phoenix 60 AAA really confirmed something I have noticed all year. Less and less hitters are swinging for the parking lot. I think after years of of hitting 280' to 290' outs, players are swinging more to place the ball and get singles than to just wack the ball. I am also strongly thinking that the U2 is more important to the singles hitters than the HR guys. The U2 places just enough fear in the outfielders (most teams) to play a little deeper and leaves more room to drop one in. In constrast to my previous sentence, I did see a few of the teams play their outfielders shallower than I have ever seen. I think their thought process might have been, hey cut off the singles and if we get burned, we get burned. Another U2 item I have noticed is with the ball coming off the bat a little faster, I see a lot more double plays than I remember in the aluminum and wood days.

Discussion: TECH' INFOR on COMPOSITE BATS & REACTION TIME.

I agree with HIt the Gap in that a U2 does not mean an automatic HR. The 60AAA in Phoenix was loaded with major players. It was a joke. Yet, in our 5 games, we had 1 HR and our oppoenents had "0". In all this reaction testing, does it take into consideration that most of the pitchers are using some if not all of the 6 foot extended box. I did find it very interesting that the 4/5 absolutely major loaded teams did not reach the final four. They were mostly singles hitters from what I saw on Sunday. I saw only one pitcher hit in the face after several hundred games this year and it was a big time player in a park district league with an ASA bat and a 40 core restricted flight ball!!!!

Discussion: the umps in Phoenix

I played in the 60s AAA at Papago Park. Even though my team roared to an 0-5 effort, I thought the umps were great. It is the 1st time in 5 worlds that I felt the umps really wanted to be there. I found the ball/strike arc to be consistant and all the umps hustled. We all disagree with a call now and then, but I hope we get the same guys next year.

Discussion: tourney in Phoenix

The thing you might have done wrong was not going to Phoenix. If you did well there, it proves your team has arrived. If you got pounded there, it proves Vegas was a fluke!

My 60s AA team had a losing recored going to Seattle in 2006. We won the tourney via "5" one run games and others decided in the 7th. We moved up to AAA this year, as required and got pounded. We capped off the season by going 0-5 in Phoenix. It will be interesting as to our rating next year.

"B" for sure. I did have an ASA ump ask me why we played 0-0 count. He, like me, think its a total waste of time.

cage balls can be very hard and hurt the bat. If you do hit it in a cage swing easy. I think the key to a proper beak-in is make sure you rotate it about 1/4 turn after each hit.

When you transfer the weight back to the left side, what body part/parts do you move 1st. Also, how much does your right foot come into play? Do you push hard off it????

Discussion: Ignore the lower lowers

My collegefootball coach said there were "9" classes of people in the country in terms of character and conduct.
1. Upper uppers
2. Middle uppers
3. Lower uppers
4 Middle uppers
5. Middle middles
6. Lower middles
7. Upper lowers
8. Middle lowers
9. Lower lowers

He expected all to never fall below middle middles. If you reached 6,7,8 or 9, you were benched for a number of games. If we benched those on this site that are obviously lower lowers--refuse to respond to any posts on this site regardless of the subject or what is said, the persons in question will probably bench themselves. Life is a bitch when you climb up on a soap box and nobody is listening.
