Discussion: What should a healthy senior program look like?

Gary I believe you're right over time it will sort itself out, but what I think will happen is you will end up with about 5 or 6 teams at most at the Major Plus level in each division. I'm sure a lot of guys have played in a local league over the years with a team much better than the rest of the league and while its fun winning a lot of games generally in a few short years at most the league is destroyed as all the other teams are tired of getting the crap beat out of them every week. I can appreciate the talent it takes to have a really great major plus team but it can't be that much fun when you have no one left to beat. It's kind of like the local race team that spends so much money their car is much faster than everyone else and they win all the time. That's great for them until all the other race teams stop racing and then what good is it that their cars the fastest?

If you look at the team ratings from 50 to 65 you have a total of 844 teams listed,73 of those teams are major plus. That means a little over 8.5% of the teams in those 4 age groups are in the elite category. My guess is some of these teams are really good major teams that for one reason or another have ended up in the major plus division. If you figure 15 players per team on average that gives you a little less than 1100 major plus players in the whole country. Now out of that 1100 players how many are truly impact players that by themselves can consistently change the course of a game? I'm guessing it would be less than half, so now your talking about maybe 500 players. Would it be a better idea to combine major and major plus, rate these impact players, and limit the number to perhaps 3 per team? I understand this might be difficult but at this time none of those 4 divisions have more than 21 teams listed as Major Plus so at most your looking at about 300 players total per division. Maybe you only rate the top 100 per division to start out.

Discussion: rules of the game

Get rid of the mat to many batters take pitches that they would never dare take if the umpire wasnt restricted by the mat. I feel this slows the game down more than anything.Yes you will get some bad strikes called but hell i've seen umps miss calls now with the mat! Number 2 once you have 2 strikes it has to be a fair ball or your out. Number 3 after the third out you have 1 minute to take the field or the ump starts calling balls. A lot of time is wasted every game between each 1/2 inning along with the use of substitute runners, and i'd change that to one runner per inning until you get into the 60's perhaps. Then for the money we pay how about adding 15 minutes a game.

Discussion: Flared or cone knob ???

Yes you can do it without the cone but in my opinion its not even close to being as comfortable. With the cost for one being between $3 to $5 get one unless you're very frugal.

Discussion: Something to ponder!!

How about if you allowed 45-49 olds to play allowing for example 50AA 1 player age 45-50,50AAA 2, 50M 3 and 50M+ 3 or 4. This would put a bunch more player into the upper divisions at once and get guys playing senior ball before they find other things to do with their free time. Once they get another hobby its a lot harder getting them back if they haven't played in 4 or 5 years.

Discussion: Playing to win or keep everyone happy?

JohnBob we will be coming from upstate New York so we won't have been outside playing for sometime either. I agree with what everyone is saying if you want to win then hitting more than 11 players is not the way to go. We have hit 11 all year or 10 the last two games of the tournament that got us the spot in the TOC,but now we have some guys that want to hit everyone. We only have 12 guys going so I don't see a problem with hitting 10 or 11 and still keeping everybody happy. To me it comes down to are you playing to win or going the little league route keeping all the kids happy along with their parents! I also pitch and it is a lot harder when there is no bottom of the lineup.

Discussion: Playing to win or keep everyone happy?

How does your team handle this? We are going to the TOC and some players want to hit everyone every game and some want to hit less once the actual tournament begins. As I'm sure is the case with most teams there is a serious drop off in hitting ability from our best hitters to our worst. So any suggestions short of a knife fight?

Discussion: My team wants the one up rule back in SSUSA

I would also like to go back to the one up followed by singles. As a compromise what if we stayed with the 3 homeruns (AAA)and then had maybe 2 homeruns as singles before going to a DBO.

Discussion: Regarding equalizing teams.

I think a great way to get more teams playing each other at these tournaments without different divisions having to play each other all the time would be to move the age groups from 5 years to 10. Make it 50-59,60-69, and so on.

Discussion: Crabtown Classic play in games

That might be the case who knows, I don't mind playing against the major teams if they are short on teams for the tournament but thats not the case here. In this tournament with 8 teams in the 50 majors they have very little to play for in the two play in games as none of them can get a bye anyway so who knows how hard they will try. Also the TD has posted that the major teams will be the home team in all cross over games which my guess is because he expects them to win most of these games which should save him some time by not having to play the bottom of the last inning in most games.Well good luck to everyone playing this weekend.

So I see a lot of people have looked at this I'm still wondering am I the only one that thinks this is a strange format for the play in games?

Discussion: Crabtown Classic play in games

My team is playing next weekend in Glen Burnie in 50 AAA which has 7 teams also the 50 majors have 8 teams. Does anyone know why the play in games are set up as cross over games with all AAA teams playing two games against Major teams? With 8 teams in one bracket and 7 teams in the other this doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

What happens if a team is 0-4 and chooses to not play their last game since they can't advance anyway? That could really screw some other team.

Discussion: Posting Team Records from Tournaments

Hey does anyone else think it might be interesting to see what each teams tournament records are as the the year goes along? I would think this would be easy to post by the staff at senior softball and then if your going to a tournament and playing a team your not familar with you can at least see how they have been doing in other tournaments.

Discussion: POSSIBLE COMPROMISE ON NEW HR RULE.

Here is an idea that I have not seen posted yet that I think might work. I play in the AAA division so I will use that as my example. Why not let all homeruns count until a team is ahead by a certain amount of runs and then make it an out. For example if a team gets ahead by 5 runs at anytime in the game a HR after that would be a DBO. I have a real problem with being behind in a game by however many runs and hitting a homerun that becomes an out,and this rule would mean that a team that is losing a game will never hit a homerun for a DBO. Each division could set the amount of runs to whatever they wanted before the rule kicked in. For example maybe: AA-3 runs, AAA-5 runs, MAJOR-7 runs,MAJOR+ -10 runs.
