It's incredible how some of you choose to be honorable in the game and life. Pick & choose your fights & morals when it's convenient to look fine and upstanding. Would it not be demeaning to call someone a sped (special ed)? Sure as hell would. Whether you want to believe this or not, that is totally demeaning and I'm referring not to the recipient, but the folks who are afflicted with this with no fault of their own. You use words like these to not use the words most likely banned on this and most every other site. But does it still make it right.

Personally, I am offended because the use of the term retarded! It is a slap at all those who are afflicted with this or anyother special needs disorder. Regardless of your feelings toward Gary, you have stooped way below anything you or anyone else might think of him.

Neck, you and some of the others are missing the point here. I'm not gonna change the game of softball by telling anyone what bat to use or not to use. What I'm trying to touch on is, stop bitching and moaning about all this saftey BS. If you want a safe game, change the parts of it you can change, not the fabric of the game we grew up playing. I'm just lost on the addiction the bats have on the players today. Protective gear, screens & the middle off limits is just absurd. Why would it matter if we played with a old Harwood CN100 and wooden bats. What changed? Did we stop being competitive somewhere along the lines here? We can't have it both ways, safety and the hottest equipment in the market. So, don't complain about safety if you really don't care. The solution is right in front of you, but most just refuse to acknowledge this.

KBL, do you really feel that most players feel that way about the bats and that they would stop playing? If so, then most need to shutup and play the game. Middle wide open and no protective equipment waviers and let the chips fall where they may. Stop screaming about saftey, cause they really don't care! They all want saftey and protection from what?

MD, I personaly played games against those players and many others that played at that level. We can talk all we want about how players then hit bombs that we'll all talk about until the end of time. Meade would have hit that same 510' shot over 600' with todays standards and the Big Cat would have hit 1400-1500 homeruns instead of the 800 or 900 he hit in his record setting years. My point is exactly the point you made. We'll talk about certain performances back in the day, just to give some sort of credibility to justify are using the equipment of today. Also, it's not the responsibility of the associations to replace or refund any equipment that become unusable from wear or rules. just like no one said you had to go buy them. We all make choices and have opinions and I enjoy the conversations that take place here. Just get a tad annoyed when grownups start using analogies that if our kids used them, we'd tell them to quit talking stupid and use some logic! JMO

Hombre, thanks for the input. I was aware of this, but was just trying to drive a point home regarding some of the issues we have as senior softball players. We read post about protective equipment and eliminating the middle of the field to protect the pitchers! The answer is right in front of us. I read people all the time trying to justify the use of todays equipment by insisting we had all the same issues with previous balls & bats. Bullsh*t! It was NEVER even remotely close to the ball speed today. We have players today hitting the ball with speeds & length that the top players in the country didn't do in their prime. Could you imagine Ritch's Superior or the Steeles teams in their prime using these super sticks? Yea I know alot of their bats were different than the ones we bought, but that even gives more credence to my point. They still never hit them with the speeds & length that players half their size and skill sets are! This my rant for now. Does anyone else see it this way or did I live in the glass bubble during my career?

Well for whatever it's worth, what kind of hitter are you or do you want to be? Power or singles hitter? If it's not important for you to go yard, save some money and buy a durable metal bat. What reason could anyone have for using anything different if your not hitting the long ball? JMO

Discussion: Should you be able to go for hits between the second baseman and shortstop

MD, I have no idea if the equipment will ever be better than it is right now. But I know based on history, they've never stopped trying to make the equipment hotter than it is. (Illegally or stock)As far as the middle thing, never in my lifetime until composites were introduced have I heard anyone complain about the middle shots and I've been pitching almost exclusively for 35 years.

"Thanks Salio! I had a feeling this was the case. Anyone who plays this game at any top level knows that the pitcher is off limits gentleman rule.."

As a younger player playing tourney ball, the middle was NEVER off limits. When, where & why did it become taboo to go middle? WHy don't we just do away with the pitcher and go with pitching machines? Would that satisfy all you holier than thou players who want to eliminate the middle without confront the real saftey issues? What happens next when the next wave of equipment is even better than what we use now? Make all infield hits an out or screen them as well? "Thanks Salio! I had a feeling this was the case.

As a hitter, the purpose is to hit the ball between the foul lines hard. The harder the ball is hit, the better the chance of it not be caught or fielded. Foul line to foul line is and should be open. I personally don't like the senior bats and don't think with diminishing skill & reflexes in our age groups should allow these bats. But, it's just like golf, you have to play the course. But rest assured, my goal in a game is to get on base. Safety for the oppossing players is not the first and foremost thing in my mind when I'm at the plate. If that was the case with everyone and they were being totally honest here, we could make the game safer by changing the equipment first. We already know that most people would rather change the rules and how we play the game before we would want the change in the equipment. So for the folks that want to preach about the middle being off limits and let's protect the pitchers at all cost. Find another sport. If your really that concerned, start a platform that really will make a difference, anything other than that is just blowing smke up all of our a**. JMO

I think this thread is great because it allows some folks to get some things off their chest. But for Gods sake, listen to yourselves. It's a game played within a group of lines and has been for 100 plus years. If the equipment has surpassed the usage of this type of playing area. Make it bigger. Move the bases back to 90", fences 350", but for anyone to indicate a part of the field is or should be off limits is just flat out stupid!

Discussion: What should a healthy senior program look like?

Tim, it seems your stuck on the Major/plus division. The smallest of senior ball. If a team plays within the rules at any classification and wins more than they lose, they should not be bumped regardless. If a team wins multiple championships, so be it. If they played within the rules, they deserve it. Most folks don't have big money sponsors, so most are local bud's playing together. So being bumped in most cases will result in SB losing members, not gaining a upper level teams. JMO

Why is it that someone different needs to win every year? Do we need to start handing out participation trophies or ribbons? Will that make evryone feel warm and fuzzy inside? Every team out here starts off on a level playing field. We have rules in place to indicate what level we can play at. Teams that do a good job putting talent together should be rewarded for doin well, not punished. I've said it before, we are ruling ourselves to death. We are taking the competitive enjoyment out of the game. JMO

Tim, iwas using our club as an example. To think we are the only team with my line thought would be a mistake. Why use the homeruns as a basis for division if your not gonna use them.

All great points made here! But here's a thought. If you build a team to compete at the AAA level and very seldom, if ever hit the homerun limit. But win, why should you get bumped regardless of where you finish in tourneys? I just have a hard time understanding how our divisions are homerun based, but if you follow the rules given & win you still get bumped. If you get bumped you very well might have to change the roster to add more power to compete. Is this ok for most of you? Our team will either play together or most will choose not to play if forced to move up or change roster. What do you think?

Discussion: Reeb ok bats

Everybody wants a great deal on bats. There are more guys selling bats for these manufactures out at tourneys or parks, with their blessings. We have brick and motar stores who are not purchasing product in some cases because of these practices. If they are not a approved dealer, the tourney folks should not allow any sales during said tourney. A receipt with company logo or store biz card should be mandatory. Tourney directors have some responsibility as well.
