I just finished an impromptu BP/scrimmage organized by myself and another senior. We sent out a mass text to friends and teammates from 4 teams in the area. It was done just to get together with buddies to play some ball on a beautiful 70 degree day in Las Cruces. We took BP and played for 4 1/2 hours 9am to 1:30pm with a beer break for about 30 minutes from 11:30 to 12. I don't know how many people are able to do this but in Las Cruces this is not uncommon. We also invited sons, nephews and others to come out and have a great time enjoying the game. Without the friendship you establish as seniors, I doubt if we could ever pull his off. We played and laughed and had a great time enjoying the game and life. "Stay thirsty my friends" |

I go there every year for Senior Olympics plus once a mth to visit my daughters and grandkids now. They have an airport, lots of hotels, casinos and great place to eat. Not to mention the history. There is a tram that takes u to 2 awesome restaurants about 10,000 ft in the mts. It's interesting how the city is neglecting softball but put 1 million dollars into a BMX bike track. Webbie: If I can help in any way lmk. Even if it means getting southern NM seniors and younger players to send e-mails to the mayor. |

But, the city itself hasn't done anything to improve the facilities. In Las Cruces in southern NM we play year round. I avg about 150-170 games per yr incl. tourneys for the past 8 yrs. Between seniors and USSSA mens. I had to give up coed no time. We have a 3 nice complexes all next to each other with a total of 8 fields for slowptich and 3 fastpitch fields. We have one of the largest slowpitch and fastpitch tourneys in the country. The Whole Enchilada draws 260 USSSA mens and womens teams class C,D & E w/ a waiting list of 30 to 40 teams. The Missy Molina girls fastpitch tourney draws about 180 teams from ages 7 to 18. I know Webbie has spoken to the city of Albuquerque leaders w/o any positive results. anyway that's just a quick background on softball in NM. Since this thread is titled "Questions to Ponder" I have one, Why is Gary 19 so negative? Sorry man inquiring minds want to know. |

I for one am thankful for a wonderful and still beautiful wife of 25 yrs. Three wonderful and great kids and three beautiful and healthy grandkids. Especially, my 2 year old grandson that just 2 yrs ago was fighting for his life being 6 weeks premature. I am also thankful for the great friends I have made when I relocated to Las Cruces from Boston. I would like to wish all you board brothers a Happy, Safe and Wonderful Thanksgiving. Half the team I played with for the Sportsline Bulls 50AAA others are from the Albuquerque 50 Caliber 50AAA. Then some of them moved on to the Desperados 55AAA and some to the Drlliers 55AAA. They are a great bunch of guys and very talented. |

| Nov. 19, 2012 boston | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Thoughts for the upcoming SSUSA Rules Committee meeting! Interesting discussion for the few teams SSUSA has for major plus. I have read on past threads about the possiblity of widening the age groups. Such as, 50-58, 59-67 etc. maybe this would help. It's a tough call because I for have seen players in AAA and major that appear to be very capable of playing major plus. I do know population has a great deal to do with availablity of quality players that not only have the desire to play M+ but the finances. Where I live and play league, Las Cruces, NM has about 5 senior teams w/ a population of about 100,000 incl the whole county. Albuquerque 250 miles north approx. pop. 500,00 and El Paso Tx 50 miles south approx. pop. 1,000,000 are far more capable of gathering a more talented and competitve team than little ole Las Cruces. So i can empathize with those that states like Ca., Fl., or Tx can pretty much survive on their own w/o pillaging other states. All divisions should go 1-1, just about everyone takes a 1st strike anyway. I play with the "Rock" ball in usssa absolutely sick ball especially with the new usssa bats. I can only imagine the damage done with a senior bat and the "Rock". I agree with everyone that says a lower team getting 2 equalizers not cool. You either take 5 runs and play with M+ HR rule or no urns and play major HR rule. "Stay thirsty my friends" |

Senior are going to tourneys even though entrance fees are going up. When customers are not satisfied with a product they usually don't use the product. At least cut back on the use of the product until something changes. As long as teams dish out the money for these tourneys and nothing changes except the cost. Who cares what your complaints are your going to show up anyway it's the only game in town. It's no different than people complaining about politicians and congress not doing their job. The pitcher would always stand on the 3rd base side of the screen to pitch. Then stay there the whole time as a defender. Makes no sense if the purpose is protection. As I have stated in the past I'm all for eliminating senior bats. |

I would say it is more like playing for a smaller school than a larger one. maybe AA is like NCAA Div. 3. AAA is Div. 2, majors is Div. 1AA, and major plus is Div 1A. This would be a more appropriate analogy and less insulting. I have played AA to play with my less talented buddies. I have competed against major and major plus teams when I played AAA. But which ever level I play at my decision is based on not how talented the guys are but how much I enjoy playing with them. I also play D and E in USSSA because I choose to. I got tired of the nonsense in the C div. Plus at 58, it is more about having a good time. Not that I don't play to win but it's not the most important thing. The world does not end if I don't win as it did when i was in my 20's, 30's and 40's. "Stay thirsty my friends" |

I just finished playing in a USSSA fall state tourney here in las cruces. Back in Sept I just played in the state championships for NM. Did I care about the name hell no. Just another chance to play ball with my son and my senior buddies against the youngsters. Fabe: Congrats on your teams' accomplishment. The impact it had on Hawaii people can only be people understood by the from Hawaii. We can make assumptions based on our states as Gary 19 has. But that is all it is an assumption. I know when the Depserados won the TOC and they were players from Albuquerque & Las Cruces. Oops and El Paso sorry big John. lol The senior softball community in NM and El Paso were extremely proud of these guys. So were the young guys in the USSSA softball community. Personally, I couldn't care less if anyone outside my teammates and my opponents wants to know or recognizes what my team has accomplished. As long as I get the respect from those I have competed against and those who understand what it takes to play and win. This is off topic but needs to be said. this sort of goes along the lines of what Fabe was stating about the young guys congratulating his team. When you compete as an older athlete. You do what you can to set an example for your children, grandchildren and the other youngsters that are watching. They could be 5 yrs old to 40 yrs old. We have an obligation to demonstrate to them how to play hard to win. But, how to properly conduct yourself with class, dignity and use good sportsmanship. If you play USSSA or ASA as I do it is even more important to set the standard and be the role model. Sorry to preach to you guys because I know most men on this board understand these ideals, responsibilities and values. We as older men need to pass on. "Stay thirsty my friends" |

I find it hard to believe that a bat that doesn't hit to a particular persons expectation can be proven to be defective. A dishwasher has many parts and the possibility of a part being bad is very possible as with any product with many parts. The only way to judge if a bat is defective is to swing it and then what? If you're not a HR hitter and you assumed getting a senior bat was going to make you when and it didn't is the bat defective? Did the ball only carry 315 not 340 does that make it defective? Unless you can see a defect i don't see how this is possible. Comparing a bat to an appliance or vehicle is far reaching. but then again stranger things have happened. "Stay thirsty my friends" |

You as a consumer buying the bat. Then complaining when it breaks or is a so-called dud the bat company not replacing it. Have you not heard the the Latin term "Caveat emptor" "Let the buyer beware". It doesn't mean,let the buyer beware, hen whine about their decision and demand special treament over the hundreds of other customers that got screwed buying senior bats that sucked or broke. These conversations kill me. Buy a bat with a warranty and you won't have these issues. If players insist on using senior bats fine. but stop pissing and moaning when they break and the companies don't do anything about it. A few bats that are extremely hot and have 400 day warranties. The Easton Stealth 100 and Easton Stealth Helmer, they come with 2 warranty returns. Te Worth Resmondo WSE super hot,even a little 175 lb guy like myself can drop bombs with these. Coaching grown men can often be more trying than t-ballers. I have played in Worlds for 6 years. I chose not to go, due to my own lack of committment to playing in a place like Vegas. Which I made very clear in previous posts. It is not due to a lack of ability, skill or conditioning, just committment. I have found playing USSSA with my son, watching my daughter play college basketball and coaching and watching my grandson play baseball a bit more fullfilling and important these past couple of years than attending senior tourneys. I have played dozens of senior tourneys in the past and saw plenty of players half ass it on defense. The only thing I agree with you on is, I shouldn't have painted all seniors with such a broad bush. The reality still is, there are seniors that look at defense as a nonfactor. This is probably due to the fact you can only score a certain amount of runs per inning. It is your perogative to disagree with me, as it is mine to disagree with you. Allan55: I agree about the use of the "Rocks". I have actually protested the use of these balls at a senior tourney. I was concerned about the dangers to my fellow seniors due to my experience with these balls in USSSA. Your correct about the bats not going away. But I am adament about the use of an 11th fielder hurting the game for the younger seniors. I think the run rule has offset the bats as much as anything w/o turning the game into a middle or high school PE kickball game. "Stay thirsty my friends" |
