Discussion: SAFETY FIRST

I think that all of us need to refrain from some of the cutezy and self worth comments and start thinking very seriously about the safety in softball. I have played with Joe Merritt for quite a few years and by no means is he slow on his reflexes. For him to take a hit as he did is very frightening. If it became mandatory for pitcher masks and even light head gear for the base running, I think that it would overwhelming be acceptable by all and at all age groups, including the younger divisions. This year,I have heard about too many injuries and deaths from taking shots from a "hot" bat to wild throws from the infield. SSUSA is concerned about one's life with the onhand and usage of the AEDs but why not be concerned about one's loss of vision, brain damage, etc. Let's make it "cool" to wear masks and head protection. Afterall, it did finally become cool to wear them in the NHL !!!

Discussion: They Can't Do That?

I just had a five team tourn. this past weekend in Columbus, Ohio.(that came about within four weeks of preparing). And trust me, it was a lot better than the four team world tourn. we had in Dalton this year and an awful less expensive. Next year, I will be having a spring and fall $$$ tourn. NO CARDS and I will try to encourage the league teams around Central Ohio to participate.Dayton will be having the Jimmy V on the 4th of July. Again, no cards. If you would like on the list for these tournaments, please email me: funinsun333@yahoo.com

Discussion: They Can't Do That?

Can't you guys see what this is all about - $$$$$. The Indy 60s are truly a good bunch of guys and would never do anything beyond the rules they play. We never had these issues 10 years ago so severely as we do now. I believe the reason is that the organizations then were smaller and big profits were not there for them yet. We as teams gripe but still fall into their graces. Look what happened a few years ago to the ISF and ISSA. Teams stopped going and changes were then made. My suggestion is to quite griping and stay away from these organizations. One solution that we are trying, is to play more local tourns. without I.D. cards. I truly feel that most teams just want to play with their buddies. But then again, you have few to the exception that makes is bad for all. Again, do the players and teams do something about it, or just keep whinning!

Discussion: Ridge Hooks comment

you cannot ask for a more nicer gentleman and his religous beliefs are quite outstanding. I think that most players are just upset with a lot of these TD because of it now being a huge business. It is like, take it or leave it. I know of many teams that do not want rule changes at the tournament. Most players just want to play ball and keep the big money and politics out of it.

As usual the team interest is starting to come about. We currently have interest of 5-6 teams. We know that it will be smaller this year, but this is something that we want to carry over year to year to get leagues involved with senior ball and for teams to get a chance to check out their new prospects for next year. In picking up a player, you can go 1 year down. Please let me know ASAP..thanks...

Looking into having a pre-tourn. for the Worlds and Winter Worlds...Guaranteed three games. WHEN: September 26th. one day. Rain out date the 27th. Fee - $200. WHERE - Berliner Park, Columbus, Oho. $$$ payout to the top teams.(payout for the # of teams will vary on entry.) Competition will first be balanced by run diferential, HRs, and added player, etc. If enough entries, then it will be divided by age group. All are invited including league teams and traveling teams. This is intended to be a fun tourn. to be used for pre-tourn tune up as well as possibly introducing individuals and league teams to the enthusiasm and enjoyment of senior softball. The sooner the commitment the better !! For further information please email: funinsun333@yahoo.com.

Discussion: Is the TOC a true TOCs ???

What the SSUSA has done to inspire teams to pursue the ultimate win in the TOC is commendable. However, is it a true TOC? I understand the $$$ issues for these organizations, but why cannot they be put aside &possibly share a piece of the pie by allowing the other(such as ISF,ISSA,LVSSA, ASA, USSSA.ASA, NSA, etc) to participate. Then we truly have a champion.Over tha past few years, rings were throw out to winners of small bracket tournaments. This eventually took the flavor out of winning. However, it would be MUCH more meaningful to have a champ of real CHAMPIONS !!

Discussion: Winter Natl's in Fl.

We had that "halo" call made against us in Phoenix and it knocked us right out of the finals in the winners bracket....With this call being highly judgemental, the controversy will NEVER end...My feeling is that there should be a verbal warning to the hitter and as well noted. The notices could be kept on an card such as the score card and exchanged to the TD after every game..Then if the player does it for a second offense, it would be an automatic out....and the 3rd. or 4th. time, a game suspension. I know there is a little work involved, but the fees that we pay could warant the issue....I do not think that the majority of us are good enough to maliciously try to hurt someone....at least I hope they don't.Most of us have to go to work at the beginning of the week to provide and income.

Discussion: Fort Myers - Men's 55+ Major Division

I do not feel that the Major division had to move to Naples.. The teams that I know that are playing in the Majors could have quite comfortably played in the Ft. Myers are of Cape Coral or Lee County. I do not know of any true power homerun teams in this divison that requires the 325 fence. The last minute notice of moving up our team created a huge inconvenience and expense to us. Plus, it takes us away from the main venues of the tournament and does not allow us to meet up with our friends from the other teams.Looking at the times for the AAA and AA, it appears that their finish times in the late morning could have accommodated another division. If you are going to factor in late starts for the entire divison, it should have been known far enough in advance for all teams to make arrangements. I know that it is about $$$$ and SSUSA promising revenue to the community. But many times it is at the expense and inconvenience of the teams which makes up the backbone of your organization.

Discussion: dead ball out

The "dead ball out" probably cost our team a chance to go to the finals in the winner's bracket. All of the umpires can NOT be on the same page with this type of ruling - too, too judgemental, It affected many teams, other than ours, in Phoenix this past weekend. I, as many other ball players, like using the high powered bats, but when we start changing the basis concept and rules of sofball, something else needs to be done.
