| June 23, 2014 The yooper | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Hitting I agree BP is so very important and hitting towards all areas of the playing field is paramount. My league team has no hitting nor any practice for that matter at all which indicates why we are in last place each year and every year, 2 wins in last 6 years. I use this league as practice for going to tournament's. Some say they play for exercise, I say when you get no hits that is next to no exercise. At 64 I get tired swinging 40-50 times so will cut down on that. See some of you folks in Dalton. Donny C "The Yooper" |

I also love to get into that position actually gives me more confidence and energy. It works on defense also, one should want the ball hit to them when a big out is needed. | June 19, 2014 The yooper | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Hitting Practice hitting is real important, like Bruce says put up cones and try to hit them, when I was young I used to try to hit bottles of beer that outfielders put down , this was in practice. lol Discipline as Mario says is very important, if I see a gap in right center I do not normally swing at an inside pitch to hit it there. The biggest thing I have learned about hitting is to know you are going to hit the ball where you want to hit it. One must be positive and be able to visualize the ball going where you want it to go. Positive thoughts are extremely important as you get what you think. Think about if you ever heard someone say, I hope I do not bat with two outs as I will make the last out and they do. What do you mean you never hit for power when you travel I recall in TN a few years back you hit it over the scoreboard. We need to increase the arc that will help protect the pitchers like Omar said one has time to "run back to second base" and allow them to have much more of an impact on the game. High arc changs the game a lot as it is much more difficult to hit, I have had a lot of strike outs with high arc in the past, seldom now perhaps a foul ball on last strike.High arc really keeps the run count down. I have to admit I do not like hitting high arc as well as the low arc meatball pitches we have gotten so use to. Not saying anything about the pitchers as I am one, but it is slow pitch, curves, knuckle balls move some but they come in so slow still easy to hit. Why we often here slow pitch is a hitters game. I do not think the arc will ever raise too many folks like the meatball pitches. Donny C the Yopper |

This thread got onto the conversation can many people hit a homerun 300 plus with a wooden bat. If I recall you hit a homerun off of me using a wooden bat a couple years back. Our fences must be around 300'. Granted, I gave you a meatball pitch just to see if you could do it. lol I think you have a couple of others on your team that can do that like Billy. I agree we have always had some powerful hitters and I have always been careful of them when I pitched. Yes, when better bats TPS/Demirini came out I started to also hit it over the fence and I could not before. Now with the ultra II I can still hit some but they are fewer, guess I am getting older and more out of shape. I may have to get a mask if I want to continue to pitch or perhaps just go play third. I tried a mask and it inhibites my vision so much and it makes me sweat a lot hard to see with sweat in your eyes. I am from up North got like 4 ft. snow yet and playing in 90's is tough and worse with the helmet and face mask. I guess one can get used to anything just takes some time and patience. I recall when TPS sarted making a better bat and than DeMarini. They went from 36-38 oz bats to 33oz and now they are lighter than that. These bats made more people homerun hitters as did the better balls. Composite bats are the newer technology and they have made a powerful impact. I recall around 2000 when the Mikun Ultra II came out I think it was banned shortly after from ASA and other organizations, but now we have it and others in Senior legaue when we have slower reflexes. Back in the day seemed we always new who could hit it out, normally just a few guys on a team and now we get several that can hit it out and on an average team. The HOF guys are just as you say they are the best at what they do just simply great athletes. Donny C The Yooper |

No way am I trying to be insulting to these players. They got into the HOF for not only being great hitters but being complete players and the cream of the crop. Many of these players could hit it out with a broom stick. The majority of players that love the game are not in the HOF but still love to play as much as possible. I am saying I cannot hit the ball like those folks because of mainly my size 5'5". Therefore I willingly admit a better bat/ball helps me hit a ball further but I am not in their league whatsoever. A senior bat is somewhat of an equalizer (if they were using wooden bats) but I will never hit the ball like the folks you are talking about, but I sure wish I could. I admire these folks and love to see them play. Sorry I led you to feel that they are in the HOF because of better bats as that was not my intention at all. To answer your question I play ball mainley in MI, Indiana, Kentucky, TN, Ohio and GA. Perhaps we can meet one day and have a conversation about this, if you get to any places I go to I enjoy meeting people that love to play ball. Donny C, The Yooper. |

He likes to field as good of team as possible. On the other hand when playing weaker teams he uses only 7 - 8 players. He does have a good bunch of guys on the team and they make a lot of SUSSA and SPA events and win a lot. Omar: You are correct about the shorter distance for us older folks who have much less reflexes than we used to. The bats and balls do make the ball move pretty quick. I still recall using wooden bats and that ball came back darn fast up the middle. Yes fewer homeruns back than, normally just the big sluggers and the fences were 250-275. Had to hit a homerun within first two at bats cause after that the ball was too soft. Oh, the memories. I still love using the better bats and balls as I do not go out of my way to look for a bat that has no zip to it. One could find better wooden bats than others way back when, seemed most folks wanted the best they could get. Has always been a brand that seemed to have more zip in it no doubt you did the same. Perhaps tecnology has gone to far or we need to make some changes to compensate for that. I still say pitch from further back, and importantly throw higher arc and give the pitcher a chance. Question is, it is inexpensive only $24.99, and is it for fielders, and if so would it be good for pitchers. Also, does it offer good protection, as the ads says nothing about this. I hit a lot to right field and I just turn in the box, its like the pitch is coming from first base and no problem hitting with good power. I need to hit it where they ain't, if I had Webbie25 power I would just hit to left (as I bat right) but alas I do not. I do recall how using a colored cloth would put the dye directly into your blood stream. I did not know the new stuff is different than what I used in the 70's. So if I am understanding you this can speed up other medication one takes. I may try it with peppermint and coconut oil I have been using together of late for arthritis. Donny C The Yooper |
| Feb. 11, 2014 The yooper | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: WINTERCREST 4b/swing: I never realized that DMSO was an ingrediant of wintercrest. It is good to hear that. so thank you. DMSO has been around for many years, problem with it is it makes my skin itch a lot. Perhaps I have an reaction to it not sure, how does it effect you guys. A good idea to put it in a product like wintercrest as DMSO does not smell too good (like an Oyster/garlic) and wintercrest smells better. DMSO cost about $20 for a roll on, wintercrest if I recall I paid $35 for a similiar amount. Not sure what other healing ingrediants are in wintercrest, one should perhaps read what they are. DMSO always helped me and I still use it. I think it is sold as a solvent not as something to help with pain. I recall hearing that NFL teams in the 70's used it regularly for pain and inflamation in the locker rooms. Donny C, The Yooper |

I think you hit that ball out off me. Senior bats do more to help smaller guys like me hit it hard. I like to move in the box gets me a couple feet on the distance of my ball sometimes gives me warning track power. lol and I hit it out of the infield with wodden bats just not too far. Enjoy this 3 foot of snow we have. hurler, The nets do protect the pitcher but been hit with a ball that came off the side of the post that holds the net. I normally pitch from the side of the mound so I can field balls mostly I pick up the ball after it hits me. Donny C |

As you say he never goes after the pitcher and I have heard him yell at his own player for hitting one back at the pitcher. I sometimes give him a perfect pitch to hit the opposite way if I see my fielders are playing him short, so they can learn a lesson. Donny C |
| Jan. 30, 2014 The yooper | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: where are all the pitchers Rik, you are right easy to hit a large ball coming at you 4-5 mph. Trick is to hit it where they ain't. Not much a pitcher can do with the low arc, hitting certain spots is nice but it is still slowpitch. Get the arc up and that will change the game a lot and help protect the pitcher. Joyce, I am with you, not happy about the rule change. I will now play another position rather than wear a mask that inhabits my sight thus making me more I feel of a target. I would rather have the screen in front of me if given a choice, more protection but still some problems with that also. Joel, most players do not try to hit a pitcher, but there are some out there. I love the middle but do not recall hitting a pitcher more than a couple times in 40 years and that by accident. Donny C, The Yooper. |

Recall a few years back when we used wooden bats, thay made an even bigger difference, the poorer teams could comnpete a bit better. I still like the better bats. Your team is by far better than any team in TC and I appreciate how you guys never pick on the poorer fielders. I also liked the fact you told your players not to hit at the pitcher (before the screen came in.) You have a very good team and I enjoy playing against you. A good bunch of guys who make it a point to stop and say Hi when I see you at tourneys in Ind, TN, GA MI etc. together. Have a good winter, Donny C |

Throwing from 10-14 feet back of the rubber is much safer for the pitcher, but I cannot get the ball to the plate from there with any consitency. Walk a couple in a row and they want a new pitcher.
