Discussion: "Freak" broke

At one of our games tonight, a guy swung his "Freak" and hit the ball close to the end of the bat and the bat broke "in half", as in two pieces, right at the end of the grip. It's a relatively new, less than 2 months, bat and hardly had any marks on it.
Has anyone else had this problem??

I had heard that since the metal rod was added to the handle, you can easily tell if it has been removed by using a magnet. Alumnium and composite material are non-magnet, but the added rod is, so if the magnet "sticks" to the handle then the rod is in place, if the magnet falls off, then the rod is gone.

Discussion: Is it bat "speed" or bat "weight"?

All of these are good points and I agree there are a lot of factors in answering this question. However, the fact is, if you can swing a 32 oz. bat at the "same" speed as a 28 oz. bat, keeping all the other parameters equal i.e. the same ball, same ball speed, same bat material etc., the ball "will" go further with the heavier bat, the physics prove that beyand any doubt. The problem is that most players can not maintain the same bat speed with the heavier bat and the lighter bat is easier to control. What it amounts to is this, every player has a power curve in their swing. At some point along this curve, there is going to be their optimin bat speed to bat weight vs. ball distance ratio. The problem trying to find that perfect bat speed/weight combination and with the prices of bats these days, that could be very expensive. It's fun trying though.

Discussion: Anyone know the correct ruling on this?

I will be willing to bet that the majority of umpires rely on the managers/players intregity to play the game by the rules. I think the real question here is did the batter have any idea that his bat "might" be illegal when he went up to bat? If not, then it's an honest mistake and maybe shouldn't be called out. If so, then obiviously it should be an out.
We, as players, have a responsibility to play by the rules and the umpires have the responsibility to ensure those rules are followed. THERFORE, it only makes sense that "every" player should be somewhat fimiliar with the rules of the assoc. they are playing in. Maybe it's just me, but after 24 years in the military, I'm use to following rules.

That does raise some questions. Let's assume that the ump checks the bats before the start of any game and all are okay. If one is found to be dented "during" the game, as in this case, wouldn't it be fair to assume that in got dented in a previous at bat or even at the current at bat???
Again, if the bats are checked before the game and all are okay, then if one is found to be dented during the game, I would assume that it happened during that game. I would also think that the ump would declare it an illegal bat and not to be used again. The batter should not be called out, "UNLESS" that same bat was used again "after" the ump decleared it illegal and then the batter should be called out. NOTE: These are only my thoughts and not necessarily the rules.

We've all heard this arguement about what's more important, bat speed or bat weight. Check out this link: http://www.gmi.edu/~drussell/bats.html and then click on the title "How does bat weight affect swing speed and ball velocity". There's a lot of interesting reading on this site so hopefully it works and people can get there, if not please let me know so I can try something else.

Discussion: Prostate Cancer

In July 2003 I was told I have prostate cancer, a shock to say the least. I did a tremendous amount of research on my treatment options. External beam radiation, radioactive seed implants, surgery all of which had undesireable side effects. I finally came across a procedure called "state-of-the-art da VinciĀ® computer-enhanced robotic assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy". To put it in terms that we all understand, it's surgery done by a "robot" using small instruments and a scope so the surgeon can see what's going on. The side effects were minimal and the prostate gland with the cancer would be removed, my best option. On Jan. 7, 2004 I had this procedure done at the City of Hope Medical Center in Duarte, CA. I was released from the hospital on Jan. 9th and my wife and I walked for 2.5 miles on Jan. 10th. I went back to playing softball on Feb. 7th, exactly one month later. I've had two follow up appointments since then and both showed my PSA level was "undetectable". Other than the fact that I've got knee surgery this Friday, I feel 100% fine with no side effects.
We're at that age now where we all need to take a closer look at our health. I wanted to get the word out about this new procedure and how good it worked for me, so if anyone else hears the treaded word cancer, they have a lot of options and this is one of them.
