As someone who also likes to stand off the plate, I've had a few instances over the years where an improperly marked box has given me and the ump problems. What has always solved the prob. for me is these few steps:
1.) Confirm that the ump knows that a reg. box should be 36".
2.) Show the ump that your bat is 34".
3.) Lay the bat across the width of the box with the tip being where the inside line should be.
4.) Put your foot on the end of the outside of the bat and draw a line from there.

As with most things in life, it's also about the presentation. If you immediately become confrontational when the ump questions your stance, he prob. isn't going to stand there and let you do all these steps. But, if you don't try to show him up, they'll almost always be patient with the batter.
