| March 14, 2012 Don5 | Topic: Bats Discussion: Reebok Melee Canijack Obviously you didn't take the time to read my post. I said my Ultra broke, not the Legacy bat you have. My bat was the 2011 grey ultra and it broke in 40 swings and Miken replaced it and it’s still in the wrapper. I’ve purchased over 200 Mikens & Combats, (with metal knobs, Made in USA's and Ultras, Ultra IIs, reds, blacks, silvers, yellows and greys for my teams since the original Ultra was called back. My first new Ultra II did not have a "W" on the endcap, when Miken replaced the warranteed bat, they sent a bat with the "W" on it so it could not be sent back.. You seem to be an “expert” on bats, good for you. You also seem easy to use the word lie a lot, maybe if you would slow down and read and comprehend before you lash out like a bully does. By the way, I have too much integrity to alter or even use an altered bat. I don’t play major plus, so enhancements aren’t my thing. Don Angle |
| March 13, 2012 Don5 | Topic: Bats Discussion: Reebok Melee Mr. Kennard, why is it that you say no one can get 400+ swings with a reebok and you said yourself that you have 600 swings on a Legacy? I broke my Ultra last year after 40 swings and started using my Reebok, I have close to 170 games on it since last March. I'm not a power hitter like some of you. I'm just hoping that people can tell their views on any subject without being called a liar. Don Angle |

| Jan. 19, 2012 Don5 | Topic: Website comments Discussion: Limited message board reading Although I respect the right for everyone to post comments on any given subject, I decided several months ago to discontinue reading any thread with meaningless or derogatory comments. When I see certain individuals names under posting, I simply leave that thread. Some have left the message board, maybe not by choice, but some have remained. I am tired of the hijacking, negative comments about everything and name calling that is associated with those individuals. I thoroughly enjoy the information exchanges and the occasional gentle banter among friends, which is what a message board (IMO) should be. |

| Aug. 9, 2011 Don5 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: NCSSA August 6, 7th Fremont, Ca. Bob, Joe may get a little excited about the play in NCSSA, but it has inproved with the rating format we use now. The competition for most brackets are close and the higher brackets are very tough to play. Omar may not have mentioned, but at the same time, there was another 17 team tourney in Lodi, same weekend for the lower ranked teams (mostly the older guys). Thats 45 teams playing out of "117" almost 40% playing in a "backyard t-shirt tourney" and we love it. I've played in over 70 tourney games so far this year and only spent 7 nights away from home, that's what we like about the NCSSA. NCSSA had scheduled over 50 tourneys this year and I get to play in about 20 of them, most within easy driving distance, too bad, I know you don't get to do that. We do have a great organization and it's pretty well run. |

I was on the Major plus roster for a couple of years as a manager, coach and limited time player. When I left to play in a older age division and had to petition SSUSA to let me play because I was rated M+, not only me but several of our players had to do the same thing. Believe me I am not a M+ player. I'm curious how many 50 M+ teams have won major championships the last few years with only single hitters, every team has single hitters, but on the M+ teams most of those guys can also hit it out too. Provide limitless homers and you will see that too. How hard would it be to rate players? Start at the 50 M+ teams and see who wins most and look at their lineup, the organizations know who the impact players are, the players sure do. And yes I know that Dave does a lot of work and they listen. |
| Aug. 5, 2011 Don5 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Input I believe that every major entity that uses sports as their livelihood would try to eliminate each other to gain that portion too. It is not a business to the average ball player; they feed into the wealth of each organization by paying entry fees, age cards, etc. to play. The only avenue as a player to really disagree with those organizations is to not pay those fees. We have noticed that the biggest complaint of the Major divisions is bracketing with the M+ teams. Withdrawal of teams is the only true way to guarantee change, summit meeting and web discussions are really just a vent venue. Sure they listen intently on what the players have to say, wouldn't you too? Change always starts in the roots and then explodes into the tree; soon the tree adapts or dies. SSUSA has been the most viable venue for major tourneys in the West. I admire what Dave and Fran do for the organization but I wouldn't want their jobs. The player rating system seems so bad that my team pulled out of 4 Major SSUSA tourneys this year, yet they seem unwilling to rate the players, only the teams. Change is needed and maybe Ridge Hooks will help provide that. At least there is an alternative for major tourneys in the West. Don't get me wrong, I think SSUSA will endure and get better, but just like everything else they need to adapt too. I like playing Reno, Cal Cup, Westerns and the big one, but not today. Don5 |
| Aug. 5, 2011 Don5 | Topic: Bats Discussion: Reebok Customer Service Based on the last three posts, I'm voting for Ed and I don't care what he runs for, he's got my vote. I bought a reebok and have used it for about 175 swings, hit some monster home runs over 250 fence, at least 265 feet. Seem to be happy about the bat, until which time it too, breaks. I think that seniors are always looking for the latest and greatest and are quick to make judgments about non warranted bats they broke with their gorilla arm swings. I expect that a bat that I use will break sooner or later, just like my batting gloves and shoes wearing out. There are some exceptions and most Customer Service folks are willing to assist you even on non warranted things, ever been to Costco? I would think that if you can hit the ball 400 feet with a senior Miken or Reebok or Combat, then you would be able to hit a ball 320 feet with rock hard ASA bat that may last for years and with a 1 year warranty. Home run is a home run, 400' or 320', still not running the bases. Maybe there should be a rule that if over 250 pounds or you juice, you must swing a celery stalk! :) Don5 |
| Aug. 2, 2011 Don5 | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: There's so much wrong with Senior Softball - Brackets I've always enjoyed playing seeding games, it allowed me meet and play against players from all over the country. I recall playing three seeding games in every major tourney. I had to arrange a lot of Thursday and Fridays off so I could play in the "Championships", but it was OK, because that's what I wanted to do. In my first year playing 60s is when SS-USA decided to decrease the number of days for the World Championships from 4 to 3 and "lower the entry fees". (Chuckle) I believe it was based on the "poll of players" who wanted it shorten, thus saving expenses for the players. Who really saved money? Maybe the Major and Major Plus players who end up playing each other in every Major Tourney have a point about seeding Games, they end playing each other 2 or 3 times, and then end up playing best of three. Could be very boring indeed. I firmly believe the only reason the SSUSA went to a 2 game seeding was to save the expense of extra games. A 10 team bracket would require an additional 5 games for a 3rd seeding game. Their current format requires only a couple of extra games and then some teams get eliminated by teams that already have 2 losses, (been there and didn't like it). That is not a level playing field as far as I'm concerned. Bring back the 3 seeding games, require every team to play in them and eliminate the 3rd loss. ***Tim Millete, I can't imagine Robertson or Streeter wanting to "sandbag". | May 29, 2011 Don5 | Topic: Bats Discussion: Aluminum The Stanislaus Senior Softball Association playing in Modesto, California has adopted safety measures including use of a pitching screen for our Ladies league. Our mens leagues pitchers have the option of wearing a face mask and shin guards or signing a waiver. We may be one of the largest weekly Senior softball associations anywhere, with 34 teams, 5 leagues and almost 350 members playing a 26 week schedule. We have noticed a decline in membership over the past couple of years and through a series of emails and phone calls to our former members we have found that the primary reason was the economy, not our rules or the balls or the bats. Our new players(starting at 45 for the men)come out with their Utrp and ASA bats, within a few weeks they are swinging the combats and mikens and loving it. Yes, we are a recreational league that has no playoffs or even keeps standings and we run thru the bases, and we use hot balls, the Baden Fire ball, which also is the ball of choice for NCSSA (NORCAL) yet we have a multiude of Major & Major Plus players in various age groups including 4 National Hall of Famers who play right alongside our weekly recreational players. I don't believe for a moment that going back to non-composite bats will cause gain or loss of any softball players in our association. However, regression is not what we seniors are about, new and improved will cause our members to dig in their pockets and shell out $200 for a better bat, even if it's made with ostrich feathers or compressed water. | Dec. 3, 2010 Don5 | Topic: Bats Discussion: miken ultra ii advanced 400, I purchased over 100 Mikens in 2006-2007 for my friends that play in NorCal and the Stanislaus Senior Softball Association. I was able to get a discount by mass purchase and sold them for what I paid for them. I had those two left over, I advertised them on this website over a year ago and really didn't get a good response. I was offered 100 for both bats, so I just forgot about them, until I read this string. Now I have had 6 offers and I accepted one for the 29 wrapped, I think I will keep the 30 just for fun, like the other 25 various bats I have closeted. I'm swinging the grey Ultra now so I don't really need anything else. Thanks to all you guys who wanted to relieve me of those bats, I wish you luck in finding one. |

| Oct. 14, 2010 Don5 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: need a new knee Strap, the most important part of the replacement is the amount of time and energy you spend rehabbing the knee. I know several players who did what they were told and are playing full strength again. Steve Owens of MTC had both knees done two years ago and he is back as good as new, and maybe 2 inches taller now. Howard Smith is getting his other knee replaced very soon and he too will probably be good as new for a 1000 year old man. I had my right knee done two years ago and am back playing outfield again. In fact I played every position on my league and tournament teams this year, no comments about playing ability though :). No problem with the knee. Good luck and get a rotating platform knee joint. Take Mad dog's advice, tell your ortho about your plans for playing after the replacement. |

| May 10, 2010 Don5 | Topic: Bats Discussion: ultra 2's ricky33, if that is the only U2 on your team, plan on 10-12 guys using that bat. Depending on how many "brutes" you have will determine the life of the bat, one good brute swing can crack that bat. I would suggest that you encourage all your players to get one if you plan on playing in tournaments or a league that allows that bat, so the guy that cracks that one doesn't get pounded by the other guys. And you don't really need to break it in....save that for the third batter. |

It's really fun playing ball again when you can actually run. I played outfield for most of the 8 games we played and had forgotten how much fun it was.
