Nothing changes. The Major and Major + guys think the world revolves around them. Einstein and Dirty are still sniping each other. We're still talking about the stupid PPR. As for me, I'll continue to wear my helmet, mask, shin guards, and last but not least, my heart protector. Call me a sissy if you want.. SSUSA, the Obama administration or any other totalitarian regime cannot protect me as well as I can protect myself.. Good luck in Phoenix..Stay safe.. |

The umpire would rule he made a defensive move , so it's 4 base error, run scores. He wouldn't know a shaved bat from '58 Ford Meteor. Since the SSUSA staff is probably in the host hotel having cocktails, they would want the Major Plus task force to "gin" up a rule banning 4 base errors and '58 Ford Meteors. |
| April 26, 2009 leftie | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: MASKS John; Glad I could be of help. No, I won't be in Reno. I have the helmet with the bill on it and it works fine. One of the things that I've found is that now I have my vital organs covered, it allows me to follow through more completely, which makes me a better pitcher. Of course, some would disagree. But, at least when the coach pulls me, I leave the game under my own power. Glad to hear that the Kayson's pitcher has taken the initiative to protect himself. I think the chest area gets ignored and it shouldn't be. Hopefully, more pitchers will take it upon themselves to make sure they are safe and won't rely on SSUSA. Hell, they can't even get tourney results posted in a timely manner. All the best to your teams this year. Danny |
| April 26, 2009 leftie | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: MASKS OTE24 The heart protector is a device made mainly for little league pitchers by a company named "Heart Guard". It's a plastic device, sort of resembles a flattened out "cup". It has straps to fasten it to your body. Since they didn't make one that had big enough straps(to fit my body) I removed the straps and had my wife sew it in a tee-shirt. I did contact the company to see if the had an adult version..They don't, but they sounded interested in making one. Not sure if they ever followed through. There may be other companies that have one. The guy sort of thought a cost would be in the $35 to $40 already in a shirt. The way I see it, a 100 MPH shot to the heart can't do you any good. At least I have something. Good luck... |

The new HR rule is probably responsible for more people than normal going up the middle. So, forewarned is forearmed..Armor up. As I touched on previously, everybody thinks only of the themselves in this thing. What about your families? After all, they are the ones who will be waiting on your sorry butts hand and foot while you heal up or perhaps writing a nice eulogy that SSUSA can publish. One final thought. There will never be a winner in this argument. Even if they change the HR rule back to where it was, someone will complain about it. Same with the PPR. That's what old men do...Complain. I armor up when I play and I don't give 2 hoots in hell what anybody thinks. Have a nice day.... |
| April 24, 2009 leftie | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: MASKS I and one of my teammates have been wearing protective gear for many years. I personally wear a full helmet w/mask, shin guards and a heart protector. The main reason I do this is because I don't like hospitals or morgues. I read in these posts where some think that wearing this gear somehow detracts from the game "we all love" or makes you less of a man. There are examples of "men" who have had to have reconstructive surgery or have ended in the morgue. I think there is one guy right now who is on life support from pitching batting practice. To make a long story short,armoring up is a personal choice and legislating it is not the answer. It just boils down to how much pain you and your family want to endue for the "love of the game". I'm sure the bats are here to stay, balls are here to stay, and guys going up the middle are here to stay. |

But, The change in the HR rule brought the bats into focus. But, any rule you make or change is going to be met with opposition from someone. I've seen guys called out for stepping on the wrong 1st base. Did it cost them the game? Maybe.. I remember when I used to umpire little league..The losing coach could always point to a call I made that cost him the game, not some of the dumb decisions he made during the game. |
| April 12, 2009 leftie | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: PPR DISCUSSION UPDATE The problem with the rule is umpire's discretion. There is a fine line between self defense and making a play on the ball but, it's all considered the same. Draw two parallel lines and if the ball goes between them, it's an out. Don't know why we have to worry about the 6 foot distance behind the pitchers plate anyway. The home plate umpire has the worst view of that on the field. Besides, by the end of the first inning it's gone anyway which makes his view even worse. Also, SSUSA should take some action before December. A lot of people could be hurt by then. The other possibility is change the new HR rule back to the way it was..The PPR might not be an issue then.. |

Since balls and strikes are umpires judgment, you probably couldn't protest it anyway. |
| April 3, 2009 leftie | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: the history of pitcher safety concern JamesLG I don't know much about NSA bats, but there are guys in SSUSA who could hit 375' with a broomstick. I think the problem in SSUSA is that the guys who don't normally hit balls that far are all of a sudden home run hitters. Then you couple that with the new HR rule and where does a guy want to hit? He's going where he thinks he can get a hit. Since the infielders are approx 75' away or more and the pitcher is 56' away, he's going up the middle because the pitcher has the least time to react and the ball does come off an Ultra pretty fast. Don't get me wrong, I don't think most hitters want to hurt the pitcher, but that's the most logical place to hit when you are out of home runs. I know there are those who won't agree, but I've had my share of being knocked on my can because the ball was on me too fast to do anything about it. That's why I armour up. I've seen too many guys take one for the team, but the team doesn't seem to hurt as much as the guy who took it.. |

I have a small shop in my backyard where I've built several wood projects, including a couple of blanket chests for my kids. I play golf..Well, I'm not sure that's what you could call it. I also have a couple of metal detectors and try to get out when I can. Me and a buddy like to explore old fort sites. |

There is no other ball game that I know of that has two home plates. so, I guess just a little "bastardization" is OK. AGAINST THE RULES? Seems that Senior Softball passes rules that seem not to be well thought out, so why not pitch from second base? |

SSUSA Staff says: "At the SOLE request of the Major+ Task Force, the rule was modified to limit its application to only the Pitcher's Box". Does the Major + Task force set rules for the whole league? Is it made up of Major+ players? Is there a AA or AAA task force? Are there any reps from those divisions on the Major+ task force? Seems that the smallest division in the league is making rules for everyone. I believe that the present rule doesn't protect the pitcher. If I can throw a strike from second base..Who cares? I also find it curious that all the big hitters don't like the new HR rule. These are the same guys who tell a pitcher to change positions if he doesn't like the ball coming up the middle. The only thing i can say to that is that maybe the "big hitters" should just "base coach" and then the pitchers won't have to complain about them coming up the middle. Happy St. Patrick's Day.. |

Joncon: Yes, I believe it is more dangerous to pitch today than it was in the "old" days. Too much technology in bats. I just recently retired from the Desperados, another one of those New Mexico teams you so "eloquently" spoke about in a previous post. But, that's another story. Any pitcher that doesn't wear a face mask, a heart guard and a pair of shin guards is just asking for it. For SSUSA to legislate this silly pitcher's box is crazy. I've always said the if you can throw a strike from second base... why not? I don't care what all of these so called studs say, the pitcher is the most vulnerable player out there and an important position. They should come out and get a little of this. There have been steps taken to protect the catcher... Why not the pitcher? At least allow him to pitch from where ever he wants. Anyway, that's my 2 cents.. But, then again I don't have to worry about getting nailed anymore, like I did the the Winter Worlds last year. |

Everyone says going up the middle is part of the game, so is taking out the catcher, but they've protected that position...We should at least do the same for someone who is 20 to 25 feet closer to the batter than the other infielders. I agree that pitchers should wear some sort of protection just because of these "All stars" who have no bat control. I never go out without it.. |

I have seen many questions put forth to them on various topics, but I never see any answers. Granted, some of the questions don't rate an answer, but there are several that certainly do. Especially when rules are changed and, because of the change, teams are saying they will not participate anymore. That deserves some sort of response. It doesn't matter what division they're in. Safety rules are implemented that clearly do not protect anybody. There are several players, including myself, who have spoken out about this and there is nothing but....Stone silence. why aren't all new softballs used during night games? Obviously, SSUSA monitors the site, because every once in awhile they throw somebody off. Why don't they have someone who has the experience and the authority to answer questions? I know I wrote SSUSA , a couple of years ago about lack of medical personnel at the fields during world tournaments..I have yet to get a response. Maybe I just have too much time on my hands.. |
