From the local AZ board from the developer.

The bat was designed to hit on one side. We worked very hard to make sure that performance and duality are on par with other bats on the market.
In terms of the performance the axe does offer a edge in both the barrel and knob. As it did push the envelope the axe is approved by USSSA
We hope to have a demo day at BLD in the next few weeks.

and

The concept is simple, reinforced the hitting side of the bat. We found that reinforcing one side of the barrel not only gave better performance but in a test with consistent factors (same ball, temps, players, etc.) that the reinforced barrel lasted longer and performed better than a standard barrel. It was a major concern moving into this project with composite. Since the axe was design for wood baseball it was assumed that it would not work for composite for the reason of one side hitting. In fact I did not think it was possible but after working with an engineer it was more of a discovery than an idea. After the testing if was quite by chance that the bat performance improved. Remember that Ray DeMarini did not invent the double wall for performance but discovered it quite by chance. He was looking for a way to keep the alloy from denting too fast and was shocked that by adding reinforcement to the outer wall it provided a twofold benefit,

1. Better durability
2. Increased performance

Our story is on the same lines in that we did not know about one benefit from the other till we started testing. Please keep in mind that this bat will not last forever, it is a high flex performance barrel with a limited life span. As you guys know we cannot have our cake and eat it too. Extreme performance and long term durability. The axe design is a hitting tool that will increase your bat speed, swing control and help prevent hand injury to the Hamate bone (more in baseball). The barrel will do its job better because of better and faster contact with the ball.
