SSUSA Northwest in Portland
The weather was 75 to 85
with a bit of wind and sunny.
The fields were in tip/top shape
with lots of green everywhere.
Best natural fields I've played on
in quite some time with ever present,
pleasant ground crews doing a terrific job.
I saw Bill Ruth play/pitch
his first game
back from his injury.
Way to go, Bill.
You're a real champ.
And Bashbro was there,
taking pictures, hitting balls real hard
providing an irreplacable and colorful charm to the atmosphere.
(Bash, don't tell Bogie
I popped up with the bases loaded
to end one of our games, OK?)

Congratulations to Larry Campbell
and the 60's MTC for being the best
60 Major plus team up there.
We, Old A's,
played a team, Marauders from Canada
in the seeding/seating round
and the guys were very good ball players
who played with both spirit and good cheer and I enjoyed our game with them
the most as we only got by them
by 1 run.
Fran and Dave were there
providing the love, class and high level
operation I'm accustomed to
when they're around.
We stayed at a Best Western
that was half a mile from the field
that served full breakfast every morning
at 6 which I never missed.
The balls were Trump Stote balls
and went very well when hit well
which I saw more than experienced.
In our championship game with MTC
Steve Imlay hit 3 balls out,
one with the bases loaded
and one that went way out
and I've never seen him better,
stronger and more consistent
at the plate.
Way to go, Steve.
You really are the best of us
and I wish all the guys knew you
the way we do and they'd know why
you're the gem, the real class
of Senior Softball.
Way to go, Bro.

Congrats to Tim Mallette
and the 50's MTC guys for winning
a very tough and contested
major plus match.
Go California

Way to go, John Dorsett,
Brian (Smokey20), L'il George,
Gil, Stan, Gary Handshire,
and thanks to Randy, coach of the Old A's for all his hard work and support.

Another great experience playing SSUSA 50AAA in Portland.

I can see now how Shawn Montee won the triple in 50AA last year. Considerable improvement and solid additions to your team. We hope to see you guys again, and all healthy, at the Classic Rock at the RAC SSUSA Qualifier August 22-23. Contact me for any information on the tournament, accomodations and anything else you need guys.

X-Men continue to be a class act though they had an off weekend. I'll never count you guys out of the competition. I hope you can come to Lacey in August. The new Regional Athletic Complex itself is worth the trip, eh?

Wolfpack Softball, with Charlie and BA in attendance throughout, and all the guys we've known and are getting to know, continue to push us to bring our best. Thanks you guys. See you soon.

To Mt. Mike's, sorry you guys got bumped up, I was hoping for a rematch this year! We had that same umpire twice this weekend and he has not improved, sorry to say. I umpire and run umpires and it is certainly a challenge to find or develop the best. We are lucky to have many of the best working SSUSA, like Dick Zier and Tom Hill and many others.

And it was great to talk to Bill Ruth, Kieth Bressman and many others I have so much respect for. Dave, Fran and Terry always treat us like champions from the start. And we are all potential champions when we arrive for game #1, because the rating system works as well as any player or manager could expect. Like Yogi would probably say - If you improve and begin to dominate, you'll have to improve to continue to dominate. And then you may get bumped again.

To my guys, Bill, Ralph, Craig, Steve, Ric, Ron, Jeff, Mel, Tom, Vinnie, Michael and Rick, thanks for letting me play softball with you. I could not play without a team. I'm lucky.

Ronnie and Roger and all the other former and temporary Second Wind guys, thanks to you too.

And to Mac, come back soon, we're not the same without you.

Kudos to Dave & Fran for a great job in Portland again! Weather couldn't have been better, fields were very good, umpires were good (except for one knucklehead), everything was first class. Wish there had been more major plus teams there, but it was their loss!
Nor Cal teams were tough to beat...
Go MTC!!
