WESTERN NATIONALS

Aug. 21, 2015

For the third straight year, Sacramento and Placer County hosted and drew a record number of teams to the annual Western National Championships. Visiting players were lucky enough to play under blue skies and moderate heat for the Sacramento area; remaining in the low 90s throughout the tournament.

122 teams from all over the West including Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington and as far as British Columbia, Colorado and Texas competed during the six-day event. Five complexes were needed to accommodate the record number of teams.

Vying for a division championship and the first leg of the Triple Grand Slam, teams demonstrated inspired and competitive ball play with 56 games decided by one run and nine “If” games determining the division champion.

Four teams participated in the first California State Championship games in which the Southern California State champions faced the Northern California State champions. In the Men’s 65 AA division, the Sacramento Buds persevered over Git-R-Done 15-4, while Dudley/Prestige dominated Handpicked 17-6 in the 40 Major Plus division.

“We were happy to see the Western National Championship set another record with 122 teams competing. I would especially like to thank our sponsors Placer Valley Tourism and the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau for making the event a success. We look forward to even more teams in 2016 which will mark the 16th time we’ve held the event,” said SSUSA Chief Executive Officer Terry Hennessy.
