Question on Health? We've Got Answers

Sept. 1, 2003 – Dr. Joe Brownholtz

Dr. Joe Brownholtz has pretty much seen it all in his years in sports medicine ˆ and that's why we thought he'd be the perfect fit for our Senior Softball News.

Brownholtz is a full-time faculty member at the University of Miami in Florida in the Department of Exercise and Sports Sciences. He has written two books and published scores of articles on wellness or health and fitness. In addition, he's penned a sports medicine column for more than five years. And best of all, he loves to play softball.

One of his favorite topics is backaches, something that troubles nearly every senior softball player at one time or another. In fact, Brownholtz says that half of the nation's population suffers or will suffer from the painful symptoms of back trouble, which can range from a dull throbbing ache to crippling agony.

He says that while backaches can make your life miserable, part of the problem is ignorance:

"Since we really don't know why we get a backache, the tendency is either to rush to a doctor or to suffer in silence."

In upcoming columns in this newspaper, Brownholtz will answer your questions about such topics as back trouble - and equally important, he'll tell you what you should be doing and what you should avoid.

So if you've got a question for the doctor about your health, your diet or even your batting eye, send them in. His regular column begins in November. Send your questions to: Rx for Fitness, Dr. Joe Brownholtz, 9823 Old Winery Place, Ste. 12, Sacramento, CA. 95827.
