Senior Softball World Championships Update: Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003

Oct. 19, 2003 – Senior Softball-USA

Teams came from behind in three of the six World Championships finals being played in Mobile to clinch their divisions Sunday. Teams from California, Michigan, Illinois, Arizona, Virginia, and Texas took Division Titles.

In the Women's 40 Division, a strong Showtime team from San Pablo, California, beat the local Legends 40s of Mobile in a best of three series of games. Showtime became the first 40 Women's team in senior softball to win the Triple Grand Slam, by taking the Western National Championships, the US National Championships and the World Championships.

The Tucson Classics upset LJ Slammers from California, beating the top-seeded Slammers 7-2 and 7-0 to take the 50 Women's Championships. The Legends 50s of Mobile came in third, losing to the Tucson Classics in semi-finals 17-3.

In another upset, the Michigan Medical Miracles beat top-seeded US National Champ California Express in two tight games (6-5 and 8-7) to clinch the 55 Women's Division of the World Championships.

In Men's Divisions, the Chicago Classics streaked undefeated through the double-elimination competition with 5 straight wins to take the 60 AAA World Championships. The Texas Sports Club put on a powerful hitting display in the finals to beat the Pensacola 60s by 21-3 to win the 60 Major World Championships.

And Thomas Engineering of Virginia defeated top-seeded Florida Legends 11-9 and 18-17 to take the 60 Major-Plus World Championships.

Star of the Day:

Local power hitter Phyllis Hurst of Mobile hit the only two over-the fence home runs in the women's divisions. Hurst, who plays first base for the Legends 50 of Mobile, hit her first home run Saturday against the Tennessee Thunder, sparking a late 6-run rally that gave the Legends a 18-16 victory.

The 48-year-old Mobilian hit her second home run in the Legends' quarter-final game against the Aches & Pains from California.

"Aches & Pains were up 3-2 in the second inning when Phyllis hit a three-run homer," said Mary Berg, manager of the Legends 50s. "We went on to beat the Aches & Pains 14-7."

Hurst hit both home runs over a 275-foot fence.
