Tournament wrapup

Senior Softball World Championships Update: Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003

Oct. 21, 2003 – Senior Softball-USA

The oldest divisions in the 2003 Senior Softball World Championships finished their seeding rounds Tuesday and got ready for the double-elimination portion of the World Tournament that begins Wednesday at West Mobile County Park and Medal of Honor Park in Mobile.

Four teams came through the seeding rounds undefeated in six divisions competing in this segment of the Senior Softball World Championships.

Senior Friendship Center of Venice, Florida, posted a perfect 4-0 record to take top seed in the 75 Division as did Mitchell's Construction of Red Lion, Pennsylvania, in the 70 Major Division. The third perfect team was Texas Spirit of Plano in the 70 AAA Division and the fourth top seed was Thousand Oak Panthers of Westlake Village, California in the 65 Major Division.

Other top seeds included Fairway Ford of Placentia, California, in the 65 Major-Plus, the in the 60 Major Division and the Minnesota 65s from Blaine in the 65 AAA.

Star of the Day:

Like the legendary Babe Ruth, Jennings "Smitty" Smith of Southern California is a threat as pitcher and a power hitter for the 75+ Southern California Chiefs.

Smith, 79, is the oldest Southern California Chief, and an inspiration to his teammates.

"His hustle, versatility and attitude are a manager's dream," said Chief's manager Paul Ross.

The owner of an upholstery shop in Long Beach, California, Smith goes to work every day he isn't on the softball field.

"Smitty's popularity with his teammates and opponents alike is legendary," said Ross.

In addition to his athletic and financial talents, Smith strums the guitar and sings country ballads.
