2016 TIDEWATER CLASSIC HOSTS 30 TEAMS

May 1, 2016

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - Thirty teams from around the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions competed at the 2016 Tidewater Classic, a TOC Qualifier, held at the Princess Anne Athletic Complex here.

The 65-age group kicked off the tournament playing April 12-14, while the 40’s through the 60’s-age group played April 15-17.

In the 65-AAA division, five-teams battled it out with No. 4 seed Long Island Jaguars 65 Red (NY) edging out No. 3 seed Spicer Properties 65 (MD), 13-11, in the “if” game. After dropping its first game to No. 2 seed Hamel Builders (MD), Spicer Properties eliminated top seed LI Jaguars 65 Blue (NY) and Hamel Builders in a rematch, before taking down LI Jaguars 65 Red to force the “if” game. Hamel Builders finished in third place.

The 40/50 Gold division featured a best two-out-of-three game series between a pair of Maryland teams, Superior 40’s/Potomac and Team Elite/Miken. Team Elite/Miken swept the series taking the opening game 18-7, before earning a hard-fought victory 25-24 in the championship game.

Team 757 captured the all-Virginia four-team 50-AAA division coming out of the elimination bracket. After winning its first game over Straight Gas 16-12, Team 757 fell to Time Bandits 21-15 to drop them into the elimination bracket. Team 757 then eliminated Straight Gas in a rematch, before avenging its earlier loss to Time Bandits with a pair of wins with identical scores of 24-18 in the championship and “if” games. Straight Gas took third place.

The four-team 55-Major division saw No. 3 seed Woodlawn Funeral Home (VA) go 3-0 in bracket play, defeating The Bank (DE) and Omega IT Services, LLC (MD), before defeating The Bank for a second time in the bracket, in the championship game.

Top seed Building Innovation (NY) claimed the four-team 55-AAA division, going 3-0 in bracket play, defeating PACS/Preferred Maintenance (VA), before downing Harford County LV (MD) in back-to-back games.

In the 55/60 AA division, Longshoremen 55 (VA) won the three-team division, defeating The Starboard/OTS (DE) in back-to-back games.

Northern Virginia Force 60 (VA) also won the three-team 60-AA division, defeating Talaga Construction (CT) and Long Island Jags 60’s (NY).

In the five-team 60-Platinum division, No. 3 seed Promotion Softball (NJ) came back to defeat No. 2 seed Hannington’s 60’s (MA) in the “if” game, 27-14, after losing in the championship game, 15-14. Promotion and Hannington played each other in their first game of bracket play, with Promotion winning 19-17, dropping Hannington down into the elimination bracket. With their backs against the wall, Hannington rattled off three straight wins to come out of the elimination bracket, before avenging their earlier loss to Promotion to force the eventual “if” game. Hannington posted a runner-up finish, while Carolina Cobras (NC) finished third.
