Senior Softball World Championships Update: Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003

Oct. 23, 2003 – Senior Softball-USA

Teams from six different states became World Champions in their divisions at the 2003 Senior Softball World Championships in Mobile Thursday. Champions included teams from Virginia, Texas, Pensylvannia, Minnesota, Washington State and California.

Two of the championships -- in the 75 Division and the 65 Major-Plus -- were decided by a slim single run in the last inning.

In the 75 Division, Tremont Hotel 75s of Virginia topped Senior Friendship Center of Florida 10-9, and in the 65 Major-Plus, Fairway Ford came up with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Dixie Gas of Florida 20-19.

Other winners included the Texas Spirits, who blanked the Louisville, Ky., 70s 19-0 to take the 70 AAA Championships; Mitchell's Construction of Pensylvannia, who beat the California Gold Rush 20-9 to win the 70 Majors; a tough Minnesota 65s team, which beat the Icemen of Kentucky 9-7 in the 65 AAA Division, and the Emerald City Masters of Washington, who topped the New York Statesmen 19-7 to win the 65 Major Division.

Stars of the Day:

In a day of exceptional play in six Division Championship games, two players hit the winning runs in dramatic fashion.

Larry Carlisle, 74, of the Louisville, Ky., 70s hit the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the quarterfinals against a strong Houston Golden Eagles team. Carlisle, who plays second base, went 4-4 during the game and brought his team into the semi-finals with a 17-16 victory over Houston.

Carlisle has been named to All Star teams in 2000, 2002 and 2003.

In the 65 Major-Plus Championship game, Bob Kaump hit a sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the seventh with bases loaded to bring in the winning run -- and the championships -- for Fairway Ford of California.

Fairway Ford beat Dixie Gas of Florida 20-19.
