OBITUARIES - 6/16/16

Tony Fazzolari

Tony Fazzolari, 91, who was a fixture at the 65 & Over Senior Softball League at Delta Park in Portland, OR, died earlier this year on Jan. 20. 

Tony was a four-year letterman and captain on both the football and baseball teams while attending Portland’s Benson High School. He would go on to earn an athletic scholarship to Oregon State University, which he would forgo, as Tony answered the call to duty instead, being drafted into the United States Navy. While in the Navy, he served his country on the U.S.S. PC-820.

When he got out of the Navy, Tony started playing in the Portland Metro Softball Association’s Fast-pitch League and then eventually the Senior Slow-pitch Leagues.

Tony played on Red Hangland’s 65 & Over team that plays on Tuesday mornings and played until he was 88 years old. Tony would continue coming to the park, where’d he sit in the dugout to watch the game and afterwards socialize with his former teammates and visit with other players in the league.

Red and Tony’s brother, Mouse, wanted to do something to remember Tony when their league began on May 10. They had a banner made up with a picture of the team Tony used to play on that will be displayed throughout the season.

Ken Dumont

Ken Dumont, 94, of North Highlands, CA and a member of the Sacramento Golden Seniors Softball Club since 1983, passed away at his home on May 20. 

Ken was a military veteran having served in WWII and the Korean Conflict.  After retiring from the military in 1964, he worked for the California State Prison System and for the State and the US Department of Agriculture.  

After he retired in 1981, Ken joined the Golden Seniors where he played, managed, sponsored (Dumont Pest Control) and served on the Board of Directors.

Ken also enjoyed spending time playing cards with friends and dancing at events hosted by the Widowed Persons Association of California and the Carmichael B.P.O. Elks #2103.


Norman Stumpf

Norman Stumpf, 78, died on May 31 at his home in Fanwood, NJ.

Norman loved softball, enjoyed playing golf, and was an avid reader. A lifelong Philadelphia Phillies and Cleveland Browns fan, he was a member of the Senior Softball Association at both the county and state levels.

At the age of 50, Norman joined the senior softball league in New Jersey and travelled extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada for various tournaments. He played in a number of SSUSA Tournaments with SSL 70 Seahawks.

Born and raised in Newark, NJ, Norm attended West Side High School in Newark and went on to Curry College for a year before being drafted to play with the New York Giants' minor league baseball team. He played with them for a few years before injuring his knees. Norm also attended Seton Hall University.
 

Donald Chamberlin

Donald Chamberlin, 72, of Turnersville, NJ, died on June 6.  He was a longtime member of the Monkey Joe’s Big Nut Co. 65 and 70 teams. Chamberlin most recently played in the Winter National Championships this season for Monkey Joe’s 70 AAA.

Chamberlin was also a member of NJ Sate Golf Association, Softball Player Association and South Jersey Senior Softball League.

Chamberlin, an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of VFW Post 1616, was employed by Carpenters Union Philadelphia Local 1050, retiring after 30 years of service.
