Tournament wrapup

Senior Softball World Championships Update: Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003

Oct. 25, 2003 – Senior Softball-USA

A handful of teams remained in the hunt in five divisions of the 2003 Senior Softball World Championships in Mobile Saturday. Fifty-six teams from throughout America were willowed down to 22 on Saturday night at West Mobile County Park and Medal of Honor Park.

One of the biggest surprises came in the 50 AAA, when the 15th seeded Road Dogs from California defeated the number 2 seed El Paso Drillers of Texas 13-3 to advance in the winner's bracket of the double-elimination competition. Another underdog -- 12th seeded Kansas City Wiley Old Vets -- knocked off 5th-seed Ursillo Insurance of Rhode Island 23-14, then beat 4th-seed Tennessee Legends 16-11 to advance to through the winner's bracket.

In the 50 Major Division, 7th-seed Buccaneers of California and 5th-seed Ruth Realty of Washington advanced to the winner's bracket, while the top seed Mavericks of California and second-seed Las Vegas Stars will face each other in the 50 Major-Plus winners bracket.

Games in the 55 Division were delayed because of rain Saturday night.

Star of the Day:

Poke Stiers, 57, has been playing softball on the West Slope of the Colorado Rockies for more than 40 years.

Stiers, born and raised in Rifle, Colorado, is the left field starter for Master Collision of Denver and is batting 676 in the 2003 Senior Softball World Championships. Master Collision has taken two first places and two second places in National Qualifying Tournaments this year in the 50 Major Division.

"I love the camaraderie of competing in senior softball," said Stiers. "We play in national tournaments once or twice a month somewhere in the country and we look forward to seeing our friends from other teams," he said.
