After 16 Years, 80+ Silver Hawks Call it Quits
March 1, 2004 – Senior Softball-USA
The San Diego Silver Hawks Senior Softball Team is hanging up its cleats after 16 years of competing in tournaments in four age divisions (65, 70, 75 and 80).Initially the team played in tournaments as the La Mesa, CA 65's from 1988 through 1991 before becoming the Silver Hawks in 1992 as a 70's team. Having won 53 tournaments of the 87 they entered, as well as winning 19 of 26 national tournaments, the team agreed to sideline their bats and gloves. Sixty-three players have played for the Silver Hawks in at least one national tournament from 1988 to 2003.
Five Silver Hawks have been inducted into the National Senior Softball Hall of Fame. They include Bob Kennedy and Joe Zander in 2002 and Manager Don Berg, Phil Seewald and Fred Massey in 2003.
