March 1, 2004 – Jack Sirard contributing writer

LAS VEGAS ˆ Scores of teams will be flocking to this gambling mecca to compete in the 2004 Senior Softball World Championships presented by Las Vegas and the U.S. National Championships in their quest for the coveted Triple Grand Slam of Softball.

"We will be using our own Certified National Senior Umpires for the first time in Las Vegas," said Terry Hennessy, CEO of Senior Softball USA. "These will be the best senior softball officials in the country."

"We also have lined up excellent grounds crews so that teams will be playing some consistently well-groomed fields ˆ and our national staff will be on hand to make sure this is the best tournament of the year for all the teams."

The World Championships will be played in September in the Arroyo Grande and Russell Road softball complexes in Henderson, the newly renovated Cheyenne Softball Complex and the Desert Breeze Softball Complex.

Teams from the United States, Canada and Japan will be competing.

Here are the dates that players and coaches need to keep in mind:

Men's 50, 70, Men's Master and all Women's Divisions will play from Sept. 23 to Sept 26. Men's 65, 75 and 80 Divisions will compete from Sept. 27 to Sept. 30. Men's 55 and 60 Divisions will play Sept. 30 to Oct. 3.

In addition to the World Championships, teams winning the Western and Eastern Nationals will face off for the U.S. National Championships ˆ and a chance to win the Triple Grand Slam of Softball.

Whether it's your first trip to Las Vegas or your 20th to the city that never sleeps, there's always something new and exciting to do.

All visitors will want to take in the sights along Las Vegas Boulevard, or The Strip and it's known to gamblers far and wide. Here you will find billion-dollar hotel and casino complexes lighting up the city that attracts millions of visitors each year.

Dropping a few coins in a slot machine is just the beginning of the entertainment options that Las Vegas offers. You also can ride roller coasters, play cards, watch a pirate battle unfold in front of you or take a simulator ride through Egypt.
