New England Rec Championships Planned
Oct. 1, 2008 – Senior Softball-USA
By Tom Marum, Softball News ReportWARWICK, RI – Plans are in the works to hold a SSUSA Recreational New England Senior Softball Championship. The tournament will be a season ending (or near season’s end) tournament for league players and teams (as opposed to teams that are put together for travel competition).
The teams and players do not have to be registered with the SSUSA. Rules will be put in place to encourage rosters to be structured to include players of all ages; no age specific divisions are intended to be established.
The tentative weekend is Oct. 11-12 at Warwick City Park, if it is available. Warwick City Park was used for the Rhode Island SSWC qualifier in August. If the facility is available on another weekend, then the dates could easily be changed.
Warwick City Park is desirable, not only because it is a quality four-field complex, but because it is generally centrally located between New England’s big three senior softball leagues, the Rhode Island Senior Softball League, the EMASS Senior Softball League and the Cape Cod Senior Softball League.
Plans are to use the Rhode Island ISA umpiring association for the tournament. This is the same group that did such an admirable job at the Warwick SSWC qualifier. The tournament committee consists of Tom Marum, SSUSA C/L New England Area Director; Bill Read, RI ISA State Director; and Curt Snow, member of the Baystate Bombers who is an extremely active and knowledgeable person in all aspects of softball.
