Two-Glove Smith Retires, But Leaves His Mark
Feb. 1, 2009
After 24 years of playing senior softball, Alfred E. Smith has hung up his glove, or rather he’s hung up his two gloves. That’s right, Smith, who played in the Northern Virginia Seniors’ Softball league, made a name for himself by playing with two softball gloves at a time.
Smith says he’s been using two gloves for the last eight years “instead of retiring after two surgeries on my left arm which prevented me from playing third base.”
Now that he has retired, Smith says that “I know senior softball was the best therapy for me” after having the surgeries.
In addition, he notes that the surgery forced him to hit more line drives as he could no longer swing up on the ball.
