Cal Cup Maxes Out in Yolo County

YOLO COUNTY, CA – The 2009 California State Championships moved to new facilities here this year as 60 teams competed for State Championships and an invitation to the 2010 Tournament of Champions in Florida.

The new Woodland Sports Park played host to the first session for 12 teams in ages 65+ and above, under warm to hot temperatures from Tuesday through Thursday. Competition was spirited as the Lincoln Hills Coyotes 65’s, Central Valley Physiomotion 70’s, Nor-Cal Renegades 70’s and Sacramento Rebels wrapped up their respective divisional championships.

The remaining 48 teams in the tournament arrived for Friday play as games expanded to two facilities for the weekend, adding the beautifully maintained Play Park Fields in Davis.

Highlights from the second session included red hot Wilson Trophy 50 and 55 teams winning division championships and:

“If Games” were required in five of the 10 divisions of play, including the 40-Masters (Nor-Cal 40’s over the Nor-Cal Stars), 50-Major Plus (East Bay Oldies over 5-Spot), 50-AAA (Conklin Brothers over Eaton Drilling & Pump), 55-AAA (Wilson Trophy 55’s over the California Blackhawks) and 60-Major Plus (Old A’s/Miken over MTC Softball 60’s).

As play would down on Sunday evening, plans were already underway for the 2010 version of the tournament back in Yolo County.
