Left Gloves on Field
May 1, 2000 – Letters from readers
The article by Doc Golumb (Expert Shares Tips on Finding Good Quality Softball Gloves, March 2000) relative to softball gloves made me think of the years I played high school, American Legion and professional ball, when we left our gloves on the field.I believe the practice was abandoned in 1949 or Œ50. Many of the younger players have probably never heard of leaving your glove on the field while you were batting.

Oldest in Oregon
In Medford, we have the oldest softball player in the state of Oregon and one of the oldest in the nation.
Tony Scafani is 86. He was one of the organizers of senior softball in the Medford area and helped start the Oregon Senior Softball League.
This season he is playing on two teams: the 50+ Rogue Valley League team and the 65+ Oregon State League team. For the past three years Tony has played for the California Seniors, who were champions in the Senior Softball World Championships in 1997 and runners-up in 1998.
Under Tony's leadership, senior softball in this area has grown from 14 players to 120 participants.
