FIRST NCSSA TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD FEB 27-28

Feb. 1, 2010 – Randy Faulkner

The first 2010 NCSSA/RMS (Redding Masters Softball) tournament will be held at Big League Dreams in Redding on Feb. 27-28. A dozen teams have already expressed an interest.

Last year this tournament had 12 teams signed up, but weather conditions limited travel over the passes from Oregon and Eureka. With teams dropping out, the format was changed to a 1-day, 4-team, 3-game round robin format.

The End Zone from Chico won beating all three local Redding teams, Burrito Bandito, Bud's Garage, and Faulkner Tax. Playing conditions in Redding were great at 70 degrees and sunny.

This year, RMS hopes to get six teams in each of four divisions, 50+, 60+, 70+, and Mixed Age. Most inquiries, so far, have been for the 50+ and 60+ divisions. Babe's from Eureka say they want to play, if the weather breaks and they can get in a few practices. You're missing out, if you haven’t played ball with the Babe's. They are an exceptional bunch of fun-loving gentlemen.

We also have a new team of "young" guys (50+) from Concord headed up by Terry Urban (The Dazzling Urbanite!). I played ball with The Urbanite 30 years ago. I'm sure glad he finally made it to the Big Leagues.

Most teams don't know about the mixed-age division. Late last year, RMS created the division to allow fathers, sons, nephews, and even, grandkids to play ball together without having to compete against all kids. At least half of the defensive and offensive lineups must be 50+. The other half can be any age. Players under 50 cannot use senior bats. The format worked great. RMS will attempt to have a Mixed Age division whenever enough teams express interest.
