MITCHELL'S BOOK EXPOSES WHY DRUNK DRIVING REMAINS SO DEADLY
Feb. 1, 2010 – Jack Sirard contributing writer
Drunk driving in the United States is running at epidemic levels. The latest statistics show that drunk drivers kill an American every 40 seconds. That adds up to a tragic 13,000 fatalities a year.Bob Mitchell, who rose through the ranks of the California Highway Patrol, witnessed the horrible destruction that drunk drivers can cause as well as the long-term damages that they inflict on the survivors.
In his new book, “Drunk Driving and Why the Carnage Continues,” ($23.99 Xlibris) Mitchell paints a grim picture of the DUI culture and why it has to change.
Bob Mitchell is the retired founder of Senior Softball-USA,.
Mitchell reports that in California alone, 300,000 drivers have three or more DUI convictions and more than 40,000 have five or more. “The most dangerous DUIs are true domestic terrorists. One-third of the DUI drivers are felony, repeat offenders,” Mitchell writes.
As a young motorcycle cop in Southern California, Mitchell made it his personal cause to get these killers off the highways, setting a record for the most DUI arrests. His reward? His superiors fired him and only after a court battle was Mitchell able to not only regain his job but to go on to an exemplary career with the CHP.
“Drunk Driving and Why the Carnage Continues” is aptly divided into two sections, one detailing Mitchell’s 32-year active duty battle with drunk drivers and the dismal record of prosecutors and the courts to stop the ongoing carnage and a second that lays out a blueprint of how to effectively deal with these criminals.
Mitchell calls on his expertise to urge the establishment of a DUI Enforcement Agency in every state as the first step needed to combat the growing national problem. And in an era of shrinking state budgets, he notes that the agencies would more than pay for themselves in the millions of dollars saved by getting these drivers off the roadways.
He also tells his readers how to effectively fight drunk driving at all levels: enforcement in the courts and in the prison system.
The book is far more than a simple campaign against drunk driving. It serves as a wake-up call against driving and drinking.
The book will be available February 2010 at Xlibris.com, Barnesandnoble.com, Amazon.com and upon request in all major book stores.
