ATLANTIC KICKS OFF CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON WITH 50 TEAMS

June 1, 2010 – Senior Softball-USA

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA – The Atlantic Coast Championships grew 20 percent in 2010, to 50 teams. The number of teams made for some nice divisions in the 50 Major, 50 AAA, 55 Major, 55 AAA, 60 Major, 60 AAA divisions.

The fourth Annual Atlantic Coast Championships here in May were played art the Potomack Lakes Sports Complex and Edgar Tillet Memorial Park.

“Loudoun County is a perfect place for the Atlantic Coast Championships, with first rate facilities in historic Northern Virginia, just across the river from our Nation’s capital”, said Fran Dowell, SSUSA’s Executive Director. “We are so pleased with the Southern hospitality and professional way this tournament was hosted”, she added.

The rain kept out until Sunday, when the heavens opened and three divisions ended with co-champions because teams couldn’t finish the brackets.

Officials declared co-champions in the largest division – the 7-team 50 Majors – because of the downpour. Veltri Transportation of Pennsylvania and IMS Dogs of Virginia were both in the winner’s bracket and declared co-winners.

In the 50AAA, High Street Bucs of Maryland and Cryans of New Jersey were declared co-champions and in the 55 Major division, Sweet Construction of New Jersey and High Street Bucs 55s were declared co-champions.

In all of the other brackets, single winners emerged.

Bass Gloves of Virginia defeated Pace of New York to win the 55 Major-Plus, while the New Jersey Hitmen emerged in the winners bracket to take the 55AAA championships.

In the 60 Platinum division, the New York Streaks were declared winners because they had defeated Northern Virginian Force in round robin play. Both teams were in the winner’s bracket when rain cancelled the tournament.

In the 60 AAA division, the Ohio Silverados were declared winners over the Boston Commoners because the Silverados had a significantly better runs-allowed percentage.

The older divisions played earlier in the week and avoided the rain. In the 65 Gold division, the New York Streaks forced an “IF” game by beating Bostonian Shoes 29-7, only to lose to Bostonian in the final game 24-13.

Hamels 70s beat Hamels Cavaliers 18-13 to take the 70 Platinum division and the Naturals of Delaware defeated the New York Statesmen 75s in the 70/75 Silver division.

In the 70 AAA division, SSL Seahawks of New Jersey beat Peachtree of Pennsylvania 16-12 to for5ce an “IF” game. Peachtree came out swinging in the “IF” game to beat the Seahawks 16-7 and win the division.
