Scorekeeper Extraordinaire
Jan. 1, 2001 – Letters from readers
I don't know what the criteria is for a Hall of Fame scorekeeper, but Shirley Covert is in our Hall of Fame. Shirley has been keeping score for more than 25 years and today she keeps score for our three teams each week and for our traveling team. She is an integral part of our team; Shirley is accurate and organized and she has earned our confidence by demonstrating her knowledge of the rules and by flawlessly keeping track of runs and lineups.
But Shirley is more than just our scorekeeper. She is like a team mother. If you have a cut, Shirley has a medical kit in the huge bag she wheels to games. Want gum or candy? Ask Shirley. Bug Spray? It's in the bag. Shirley brings a jug of water and cups to every game and during hot games you have to drink enough water ˆ or face her wrath. She keeps track of courtesy runners, which greatly helps the managers, and she doubles as our travel secretary.
It is around Shirley that we rally. She is indispensable to our three teams and takes scorekeeping to new heights.
