Discussion: to screen or not to screen

why do people complain about changing the game when it comes to trying something that is intended to be a safety issue?

why are we changing the game by limiting Home Runs? The game would be faster with unlimited HRs and the good teams would be elevated to a higher level quicker; and there would be less balls hit up the middle by the power bats because they are out of HRs or because they have a limit and don't want to hit a solo. With a 5 run inning the game would be much faster.

I would like to hear the arguement against unlimited HRs. IT's not for saving time; it's not for making teams equal; what is the reason? If one says that nobody will chase the balls, then have 2 balls and SB12s as backups. Teams will chase the balls.

Look up prolo.org and then for a Dr. near you that deals with it. It is amazing what can be done now a days instead of surgery.

Discussion: Bat Cheating...

Bat cheaters have many ways to hide what they do. Having a PST honed out; stripping the paint off an Ultra II or titanium and re-paint or add labels; etc.

I remember an SPA tournament in Tx when a team from Louisianna came from behind in one inning by hitting HR after HR while passing the bat. The sound that bat made was the broken egg sound of an Ultra II. We could not prove it and nobody knew any of their names.

My opinion, I think allowing the senior bats levels the playing field and is a good thing.

Discussion: A THANKLESS JOB

I agree. the Coach never gets the credit they deserve. I was a temporary coach for 2/3 days in a tournament due to coach's obligations. It was the worst experience in my softball career. I think "babysitter" is the top of the list. However, a large roster is not bad if everyone respects the other players on the team and encourages alternating. I have done it, and if one accepts it up front I have found it is even more relaxing of a tournament. This goes twice for tourney Directors. Talk about thankless.

Discussion: Team Looking For TOC Players

guys not taking sides but after seeing how players open their mouths in a group compared to one on one; and how players fail to commit to attending a tourney or canceling out. Nothing suprizes me about what anyone player may have said at the ballfield to another player vs what the team coach officially says.

I don't know if all teams have a problem with failure to communicate at an early date so that others can make vacation time; get lower rates on air etc. I know every team I have played on has a few that just don't communicate. But that is another story and a problem for the coach.

I was at the TOC last year and it was a nice break to get away in mid winter. this year is even more spliting the winter and I have heard that the temp is usually in the low to mid 70s.

Discussion: Home Run Rule?

My opinion only and not speaking for the team. I would rather see unlimited HRs at all levels. This way the better teams are moved quicker to the next level. I have played AAA and Major ball and I don't see that many HRs hit. However, if they need to be restricted why would anyone ever say if you hit a ball that well, it is an out? Good bats or not. and the reason for having these bats is to keep the game honest. Remember, it wan't that long ago when some teams used cheater bats in National competition. Pass the bat and hear the sound. I beleive the % is far less now - just opinion no facts. Also remember, for most of us, we like to play with our friends and some have the ability to hit the ball far and some do not. so saying that HR hitters should move to the higher level is now dictating that friends should not play with friends - and that is a shame.

Discussion: My team wants the one up rule back in SSUSA

Speaking for myself and not my team, I like the idea of 1-up and singles. On fields like Greyhawk Park (325 fences) our team does not make the limit. However, in some parks with some balls (I think it was Louden tourn / using the shark ball) - the HRs fly. So one cannot across the board state what happens in one tournament can happen in all. I still believe that unlimited HRs at all levels with save time in games and allow for quicker differentiation of team categorization. However the 1-up rule with singles does not severly penalize a batter from hitting a ball well.

When one thinks about the different dimensions of the fields; temperature at the time; and, balls used - it is a tough decision to come up with one answer fits all.

The fields were great; the balls for good; the weather was great; the fences just right; for the most part the umpires did a good job.

DAVE, Nice job!

Discussion: CAPE MAY WEATHER UPDATE - SUNDAY

Dave and Fran: once again you did a great job. Once agin it rained hard but the fields soaked it up well and you got the entire tourney in. Fields were spruce up between games and infield ball took true hops. Tourney remained on time - good allowance for schedules. Once again, it was a joy to play in Cape May again.

Discussion: Balls and all

I have no problem with the current senior ball. Used in Northeast Championships, in Cape May. The fences were approx 320 and balls went out. One had to hit it well but they went out (at least when the wind wasn't blowing in like it was Fri and Sat).

I have more of an issue with when two teams from different divisions play - such as a major and a triple A, why penalize the major team twice. First you give the AAA team a choice of 5 runs or extra player; then you make the Major team play under AAA Hr rules.

No wonder why teams change names and do anything to avoid moving up to major or major plus.

Lets start making it beneficial for upward movement and allow the higher level the appropriate HRs

Also, how can one team be knocked off in the double elimaination round by a higher level team? That makes no sense to me.

Congrats to High Street.
A few areas that need to be addressed as improvements include: 1) not allow different classificatins to play in double elimination rounds - that is why they exist. It is not right for teams to be eliminated by higher classification teams. this is a big problem and one that needs correcting or let teams know prior to sign ups. It must have been an oversight and not greed in not having to shell out $ for additional trophies. 2) Once again the pitcher protectin rule was a problem some of the managers and some of the umpires do not know the rules and it once again caused agruements on the field while time ran out on clock.

Areas of excellence include: field conditions and the vast majority of individuals for their sportsmanship.

High Street Bucs, congrats! It was a lot of fun. No matter who was up or down on either day, it seemed both teams tried to get more fun jabs in.

I agree, the tournament was great. I particularly liked the continuous maintenance of the infields at both complexes but especially the big fields. Best i ever seen. Fran and Dave you get an A+.

umpires were very good. Only heard of one issue with an incorrect call on the Pitcher Protection where supposedly a ball was hit up the middle and the pitcher raised his glove over his head to catch the ball and the ball glanced off his mit and the umpire called the batter out. I wasn't there but heard about it. I have seen this in the TOC in January. the umpires need to be clear and on the same page as the players on what is in the rules.

Discussion: Deleteing The PPR Rule

I have been playing this game as most of you have, for over 35 years. I remember playing in money tournaments, at least twice per month back in the 80's. We ran two tournaments a year to fund ourselves and we turned teams away after we had 32.

In tournament ball back then, the A flight teams scored >30 runs per game; B flight teams scored >20 - 25 runs per game and if you didn't score 15 per game, you didn't get in those tournaments.

Softball in tournaments always was a hitters game. Good Defense was a plus, butif you didn't hit, you didn't play. In that respect, nothing has changed.

Yes, hitting up the middle was done, but it was controlled by each team - you hit at my pitcher and I'll hit at yours. But most of the time it was a mistake. Most of the power hitters went for the fences (which were 270 ft). SO the PPR does not solve anything; I wuld think most of the hits up the middle were mistakes.

Discussion: Deleteing The PPR Rule

I fully agree, but many pitchers do not and neither does many of the directors. The arguement is that now one is placing a foreign object on the field.

To that I say yes and great. I have owned a screen for practice for several years and it would not get in the way and it would difinitely reduce the risk of injury especially serious injury.

If the organizations will not make it a rule, why not make it optional to the fielding team??? No fear of litigation because it was by choice.

I agree that the HR rule changes causes injuries. There is absolutely no reason whay to limit HR (except maybe in the last inning). the game would move quicker; the best teams would advance quicker; players would be happier and more egar to spend $ to travel; and, the big hitters would now stay away from the middle without being forced to change their swing.

Can someone provide a negative to what I just mentioned? I have never heard any arguement to this.

Discussion: Why didn't any 50 teams any division come to LVSSA

I will grant you, better than most. But a far cry from sying that it gives all softball players exactly what we want. That is too much of an assumption and one should think twice about making such generalizations.
