Thought you'd get a chuckle out of it Dave...........Have had a bunch of positive comments from players from the 'ol days on the new "nickname" you gave me. They really like the "new Sparky the Rattlesnake" moniker.

Discussion: No batters box, Umpire calling batter out for hitting outside the batters box

If Senior Ball (all Associations) would ever take my suggestion and use today's technology by using something call "YouTube", they could get ALL UMPIRES on the same page for:

1. Correct Arc Heights, Limits and Calls
2. Correct Field Positioning
3. Correct Field Mechanics
4. Rule Interpretation
5. Dress Code
6. Correct Vocal Mechanics
7. Update availability on New Rules
8. Field conduct and presentation

Have suggested this to each Association's Regional UICs and National UICs including SSUSA for going on 3-years and still no response.

In the past, any time someone would ask "why" it does it take so long to "post" tournament results, one of our "fearless" leaders would pop up and try to explain that "it just takes time" among others like "you have the patience of a rattlesnake", etc.

How then does the 60's & 65's Northern Championship this weekend ALREADY have the up-to-date Scores & Bracket while the tournament is "STILL" underway at the East Lansing Sports Complex? To address the matter further, the "SAME" tournament for 50's & 55's being played at Potterville's Lake Alliance Sports Complex has "NOTHING"?

Some one over in East Lansing is truly on the ball and should "share" that technology with the rest of the tournaments.

Discussion: Its suppose to be about players playing the game

I remember one Umpire (he is retired now in AZ) from the Mid-Michigan area that would kick a player out of an upcoming game if he caught him/her drinking a beer out in the parking lot whether he was the scheduled Umpire for that game. This was prior to the scheduled contest. He was a pure joke but the City of Lansing kept him on their schedule and to this day, no one ever understood why. Hopefully this is not the Umpire in question but he could diffidently be a "dead-ringer" for this Western tourney Umpire. Live well 3CPO.....That was the nickname everyone called him.

All this discussion on this “rose-colored glasses” Umpire who should have never been allowed to take the field, my question. Where was the Western Nationals Tournament Director and the Western Nationals Tournament Umpire-In-Chief while all of this was happening? Whoever hired this “clown” should be held accountable as well.

BP is doing just fine 400. Had my annual checkup just last week and the "Rattlesnake" as Dave alludes to, is still rolling along. Retired from Management, Umpiring and Playing years ago and finished with Sponsorship last year with the Banker-Mann Softball Club.

GeeeeWizzzz Dave.............If you and the staff would take some of those "exacting" standards and put them into some creative action, you wouldn't have to make all the snide remarks toward me...........Cut me a check and I will put together a "What I did on my Summer Vacation" project with YouTube to assist the Umpires new and old alike.

And once again, thanks for the "Rattlesnake" trait thingy!

BadCallBlue:

Right off the bat, nice to read a reply from an experienced Umpire. Your credentials are spot on. Here is mine:

25 years A.S.A. Umpire State & National Certification
11 years U.S.S.S.A. Umpire State & National Certification
13 years U.I.C. for the Eaton Rapids (MI) Softball Association
Current owner of the combined A.S.A./U.S.S.S.A. National Career Managerial Career Victories record ( #1,544 )
2013 Sponsor Men's 55 AAA SSUSA
2014 Co-Sponsor Men's 55 Major SSUSA

I continue to feel that if Senior Softball (all Associations) would use some of today's technology such as YouTube.

To add to your statement: "Just a note to help you understand where the UIC's and Umpires are coming from. This is not a big pay day. I do it because I love it and enjoy the Seniors. They are very appreciative of my hard work, knowledge, professionalism and the ability to call a good game. Some larger tournaments it's difficult to find umpires to fill the need. SSUSA had grown tremendously in the last 5 years and I am not a fan of a 40 division. I see guys registering the morning of tournaments and a quick tutorial of the rules. Yes, these are the ones that struggle."

I totally understand your point but if an association like SSUSA or the others continue to "pat themselves" on the back for the number of teams and their "big" tournaments, they would also be well served to look at unique ways to acquire new Umpire talent as well as develop some "tools" to assist and teach Umpires already listed.
