Discussion: Recreational Softball Leagues...What's Wrong?

Makes sense to me that if you're not motivated to fix a problem you would blame somebody else. That's typical in government work. We're starting to try to develop some information here in Tampa so that we can go to the Council or the mayor and try to bring some pressure regarding adult recreation because it is being neglected universally.

Get in touch with your local representative. If you don't know who that is go to www.softball.org which is ASA's website and look up the local representative. They will have phone number, email address, and snail mail address listed.

I haven't been able to find a posting if there is one anywhere. Just happened to be in the players rep's office last night reading over their shoulder. Those are the ones that stick out in my mind. On a number of occasions, they cited getting more in line with the other senior softball associations as the justification.

I understand there are several proposed changes on the agenda that will affect senior softball directly that we need to step up and say something about.

1. Senior softball division only, strike zone mat to be implemented in ASA...

2. Pitching distance to 53', bases to 70' for all divisions.

3. Mitt or glove legal for use anywhere on the field.

4. Ball to go to 44 core/525 compression. I think this would probably settle a lot of the bat questions. Personally, I'll give up my U2 in order to hit a better line of ball all the time.

Step up and have your say...

Discussion: Recreational Softball Leagues...What's Wrong?

I had an interesting discussion with some of the administration of the City Parks and Recreation Dept here in Tampa the other day. It was regarding the decline in both the numbers of teams playing in the city and, also, the decline in the quality of the competition. It was the managers position that the "new bats" were a major cause in the decline in numbers. His position was that people were hearing so much information about how dangerous the bats were, and additionally how expensive the game was becoming to be competitive that they were moving to other forms of recreation.

Any comments on that???

My position had a lot more to do with a couple of what I consider to be more significant issues...

1.) Poor conditions of most of the fields in City except for our main complex, which, of course, the recreational coed and womens teams are not allowed to play regularly.

2.) Poor facilities at most of the parks, i.e., restrooms, water fountains, dugouts, etc.

3.) Poorly motivated officiating staff that is not monitored, trained, or disciplined after being hired.

4.) Lack of originality in the design and execution of promoting recreational activities in the city.

Discussion: 70' bases?

I must have misread that post from Charlie. I could have sworn he said throw him out, is it considered thrown if it rolls half way. D*%N Charlie, at 70' the baselines are finally back to how deep you play.

That being said, I'm not sure I'm ready to run that extra 5' to keep out of the double plays that I might hit into. Good to hear from both of you old guys, though, Charlie and Bruce.

Ken, There is a 50 and over league that plays at Greco park on Thursday nights. Stop out and meet some of the people and I'm sure that you'll find a hook up there. I'll be there with the Bandits and look forward to meeting you. You can email me at banditball@mindspring.com.

In Fla Half Century we are currently rated in D and are looking to improve the team mix and move back up in the ratings. There is room for weekend players if you are including a couple of weekends for practice and not just tournament weekends.

Discussion: WWSSA is here

I've been kind of quiet waiting to see what was going to happen and finally last week was able to get an info packet from a national "advisor/director" that Chris was supposed to have sent out a while back. If the idea is to attract attention to the product, then you have to do something to contrast the product from the rest of the market. All associations claim to have the players' well-being at heart as well as "providing the best experience" possible. What sets WWSSA off from the others? Do they listen to the players and not arbitrarily ban particular bats?

No, they allow the use of the 100+ MPH bats from the various manufacturers except for Miken. I'm sorry folks, but the Synergy, Synergy +, and some other bats can be pretty darn close to as potent as the Ultra2.

Do they let the players, at least, play with a better grade of ball? No, I see that they are requiring the 44 core, 375 compression ball that ASA, ISA and the rest of the alphabet soup is using.

I also feel that if you (the association) are going to dictate prize packages, then you should make the merchandise available at a more attractive price for the TD. $4.75/unit on Knob Cuffs is retail, no break there. As a TD, why wouldn't I order the Knob Cuffs from Spring, Tx, and buy 100-200 of them and get a "much" better price?

I was very interested in this phenomenon when it started but I think that between the conception and execution something of a credibility gap occurred.

I guess I might as well go back to the "tried and true" and be prepared to be unhappy with the changes as they occur.

If you would care to attempt to convince me of my misconceptions, my email address is in my profile or you can reach me at banditball@mindspring.com.

Boss Bandit, disappointed again.

There is a regular 50+ league playing Monday nights at the new section of Eddie Moore complex in Clearwater. Also on Thursday nights in Tampa at the Greco complex. We play year round and this is in addition to the Florida Half Century stuff. Email me if you'd like more information. My email address is in my profile.
