Discussion: Bullhead City Senior Softball Tournaments soon to be under new director

Greetings,

It is with mixed feelings that I announce that I have resigned my position with the City of Bullhead City’s Recreation Division. I have accepted a position in a neighboring city that is closer to my home and my children’s school. I look forward to the new challenges and opportunities that I face, but I will most certainly miss the great friends and the great memories that I have made in my time with you.

I feel honored to have been able to have had a hand in shaping and guiding the Senior Softball Circuit in Bullhead City over the past 8 years. I continue to be humbled by the enthusiastic responses from so many of our returning teams who supported us season after season. Watching this event grow from a loose collection of teams and players into a highly anticipated, classy tournament has been one of the highlights of my career.

In my immediate absence, the Bullhead City Recreation Manager David Heath will be taking the helm of the event until my replacement is selected and brought up to speed. Many of you know and have had the pleasure of working with Dave, as he has been a field supervisor during many of our events. You know him as a friendly, responsive and knowledgeable person who will make sure that all of your concerns are addressed.

It is my greatest wish that this Bullhead City Senior Softball Circuit continues to serve each and every one of you for many years to come. I certainly hope that I can spend some time at the fields during these events to show my support.

Thank You,

Ryan Fruhwirth

At ease gentlemen. My point about the 400ft fields was that we would HAVE extra fields to play on. Of course we aren't going to stick the 65's out there and make them chase down balls through all that grass. We have temporary fences that would be brought in for the senior tournaments. The purpose for the 400ft fences is so that we COULD accommodate even upper level baseball leagues and tournaments when they choose to come to town.

We are carefully weighing the decision to switch to the more commonly used Rock ball. As with any professionally run tournament circuit, the safety of our participants MUST be our top priority. As most of you know, we have a fairly liberal bat standards for these tournaments. To introduce a .44 Cor 375 compression ball in the mix could introduce an unstable element. We are however, researching the possibility.

**As a Side Note**

My staff and volunteer groups STILL had to chase down numerous home-run balls in the various age divisions, INCLUDING the 70's when they played on the 300ft fence fields.

Benji, sorry to hear that you didn't approve of the officials this year. We have hired the best crews that work in St. George, Mesquite, the Winter Worlds, and numerous other high-profile Senior Tournament from around the country. I don't often get complaints about the staff, but I will look into it.
Additionally, we aren't particularly fond of some of the 'time saver' rules that we are required to abide by, but we don't have sole domain over the facilities we use. We share them with several other groups in town and we have a drop-dead time frame that we must be off of the fields by each night. Perhaps with the addition of these new fields, we will not be under such stringent requirements. We understand that many players may not like the 1/2 run tie break or the 1-1 count, but we suspect that you would REALLY dislike the prospect of ending a game in the top of the 5th inning before you get to bat.

Congrats indeed, Jeff. The teams in the "A" Division of the 2015 BHC Spring Senior Softball Tournament were some of the highest caliber we had ever hosted. We were honored by their choice to join us and we look forward to having them back every year.

With the growth of this years event, we were able to break out the Major and Major+ teams into their own divisions so that the AAA, AA and Park Level teams could be more competitive against each other. As any experienced tournament administrator will tell you, growth in the early stages is painful and some team's ego's get bruised along the way.

This years tournament nearly broke the 100 team mark. This may not seem like a lot in the grand scheme, but for a non-sanctioned home town tournament like ours, we are proud of this accomplishment. CLEARLY we are doing something right when we have more teams wanting to play than we can accommodate.

We have received numerous compliments about our facilities over the past few years. In fact, we just broke ground on our new 3-plex facility to be located adjacent to our existing 4-plex. Those fields are going to have 400ft fence lines! It will be nice to be able to host more of the top rated teams from across America.

The 7th Annual "Fall Classic" Senior Softball Tournament is scheduled for Friday, October 30th - Wednesday, November 4th. We are expecting to set another attendance record. If you have any questions, please call (928) 763-9400 Ext 306.

Discussion: Required Face Masks

Due to growing concerns over safety in our events, the Bullhead City Spring and Fall Senior Softball tournaments will be requiring the pitcher to wear a protective face-mask at all times. Most players already do, however it will no longer be optional. I am working on the verbiage for how the rules should be stated. Can anyone provide me with the rules that other tournaments use concerning this face mask requirement? Are there equipment specifications that must be met?

Thanks for your input!
