Kind of a weird configuration? seems like there should be more in the back of the box not the front As per Dave's previous comments in an earlier thread...*were trying to save the pitcher*! I would like to try to hit the deep pitch without having to tomahawk the pitch! I vote to eliminate the back line! issue solved, one less line for the umpire to have throw somebody out for wiping the line out! ok lol I know that won't happen but it was worth a try. Still would like the back line further back though. |
| March 9, 2019 lowprofile | Topic: Bats Discussion: Softball bats on southwest airlines You can take full lenght bat bag (roller bag), put the bats in the bat compartment of the roller bag, put all her gear also in that bag, put her backpack also in the roller bag so she can use it when she gets there, her uniforms and whatever ball related items and just check the bag in. Then use a regular backpack for for personal items and carry that onboard. Did this last year going to Sac town for a tourney, worked out great and Southwest you can check one bag for free(your roller bag) just a thought and no problems. |

Outlaw, not quite sure of the purpose but thinking it's just for the players to have some fun while in Vegas, thinking it all goes back to the players, but some money would possibly have to be put towards logistics but everything else would go back into the prize pool. Omar, love your guy's distance contest....here's another $5 I can beat Joe Smo I know it! lol. but as for your statement regarding the prize pool? if you look at the bottom of my post I state it's all HYPOTHETICAL as yes I just threw out the number, but all of that would have to be determined my guess is by what kinda interest it gets? obviously if theirs a lot of people the pool could be big, if not well you guessed it. But ya how could you go wrong...A new in the wrapper lez say top two senior bats manufacturers bat. |

Friend of mine living in Vegas has told me they were discussing having a home run hitting contest during the April Vegas SSUSA tourney. So here's the twist...the buy in would be approx $200 dollars +/- (to be determined) why so much? well there going to give you a new in the wrapper bat by lets say one of the top two senior bat company's. So your on deck, unwrap your bat and then swing away for the contest. no dirty bats to worry about, everyone's on a level playing field. If you don't make it to the next round, you still walk away with a new bat. prize pool is let's say $1,000 with a 2nd and 3rd place pool too. Told my friend I would throw it out there and see what kinda response it gets. what do you guys think? is this a ridiculous concept? any legs to stand on? please leave any feedback you want so they have an idea if this would work? please note what I have stated in regards to prizes and prices are hypothetical at this point, all of that to be determined at a later date. |
| Nov. 6, 2018 lowprofile | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: called out Here we go again lol, been watching a lot of senior ball on you tube and noticed some batters have a bigger stride than others, almost all the batters line there back foot to either the middle of the plate or the front of the plate, some that line up with the front of the plate can still stay within the front line while swinging and have no issues, some just have bigger strides. But one thing I noticed that is common with almost everyone is there BACK FOOT always stays in the same place, so....to elevate all this craziness everyone's feuding about why not change the rule to where as long as there back foot does not go past the front of the mat then they can stride as long as they want? were only talking about maybe 3 to 4 inches when a lot of people go out of the box anyways. I get that people will say...just start further back, but for some reason a lot of players like to catch the ball at a higher arc then having to reach for a short front of the plate pitch. I personally don't have any vested interest in this issue as I start as far back in the box as I can get and been over a year since I have been called out for this with almost 200 AB this year so far and not called out once. I'm just stating what I noticed by watching a lot of games on You Tube and maybe some way to help this issue as I see a lot of upset people in the next coming up SSUSA tourneys because of the awareness now. I do not want to be banned from this site as i enjoy reading the goings on with our great game, so just know it's only a POSSIBLE solution to the problem, and I'm OK with the status quo, just a lot of people abuse the rule. |
| Oct. 25, 2018 lowprofile | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Keys to Tournament success Going a lil different direction then the other guys as what to me has a big impact at giving your team a better chance to win is IMO the pitcher! In USSSA it is a monster to have someone that can juke and get you off balance a little, but in senior ball I guess it's someone that can really hit there mark...deep, short, high or flat. But also if you have someone who can throw a legit knuckle ball it can screw a lot of people up as just an example we used to own this one team then the next season they got a new pitcher that threw legit knuckle balls and they seemed to start beating us! so just in my opinion the pitcher to me is the man, if hes just throwing cookies all day...most all of us are going to smash period. |

I have to agree with bkb555 the videos you can watch on You Tube Senior softball from this years Vegas worlds is a blatant disregard for the front line and not being called especially in the major + division. I have a big stride and start at the very back line so I don't violate the front line. Some of the different fields due seem to not always adhere to the dimensions the box should be as Dave stated and most likely a little smaller than should be? thus maybe some of the non calls and I'm thinking this might get bad for people that step out of the box since it's being called out on this open forum. I understand that we all need to adjust and maybe there could in the future be an amendment or something to the rule as I see probably 70/80% line up to the mat and stride on the line or out of the box, very few go to the front line, and the others go to the back line. I don't want to upset you Dave or Tim this is all just a perception viewed on video and a known fact. I personally would love to see the box extended a little as I could open up my swing without fear of being called out, BUT the rule is there for safety and so people don't go stupid crazy forward which yes you could feasibly smash middle even harder or get on the pitcher faster as I agree with your pet peeve Dave. I'm sure were killing a dead horse here as I don't think were going to get a rule change and I'm fine with that, Dave feel free to delete the thread maybe tomorrow after some last minute people want to chime in as I do not want to stir up any bad feelings with the players or SSUSA as I only wanted to know the rules about STEPPING ON THE LINE when contacting the ball. Txnighttrain, you are correct in the aspect of the box being big enough, We just have to adjust and I have. I am just stating that it is a rule that is constantly violated and not always enforced. As Nancy says...senior softball has even less need of a batter's box because of the fixed strike target, I would agree with Nancy because as I said earlier most everyone lines up to the plate or mat, not the front line. But Nanac we probably still need a box cause some people would go stupid crazy out of the box and as Dave says he wants to protect the pitchers which I would agree with, these balls and bats we use can do serious damage to someone. Watched another video today on You Tube, Major plus teams, almost EVERY batter went completely out of the box, not foot on the line, I mean way out of the box. And LMBO when I watched a guy just obliterate the front line as he stepped in with the ump right in front of him and NOTHING SAID!. So is it more exceptable in Major plus than say AAA? I've played both, people in AAA can hit just as hard as Major plus players IMO. Anyways so thankful for SSUSA to give us this platform so we can all enjoy doing something most of us have done our entire lives, they make the rules and they do whats best for our safety as were OLD PEOPLE with slower reactions than when we were younger.I almost qualify for the Denny's senior discount on a side note...woo hoo! playing this weekend in SoCalssa and still get excited to play! so rock on fellas and ladies and keep your foot in the box. \m/ |
| Oct. 20, 2018 lowprofile | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: batters box Hey Nanc, I agree with you totally that yes a rule is a rule and should be enforced, in there lies the problem that it's not always enforced and no box (wiped out) just kinda wipes the rule out. and love your insight into...no HRs left...I'm going middle lol, It is by far the easiest way to get a base hit unless you have a 5 man infield. you still look good Nancy haha! Wayne ok but not all umps are like you, of course I've seen upms redraw the line with a bat, but more often than not it does not get addressed. And not sure what your talking about... not being in the box to start? thinking it's a no pitch if the batter isn't in the box and you pitch? maybe I'm wrong lol. And to your remark at me about dirty catcher? was just saying that in a funny way if you see I added LOL at the end of the sentence!!!! so as you said.....no need to complain! |

Yo Stever, I was just inquiring about the front line as long as my foot touches the line am I good? I got my answers. And to your question of...why don't you adjust your approach? of course I have, I haven't been called out in over a year I think? so no problem there. just saying it's such a problem that people always say...some umps call it and some don't. and that is the truth! So just for the heck of it, I picked one of Dave's new You Tube videos Mavericks vs team Kitty recently posted from this years Vegas worlds, I picked three category's...In the box swing, out of the box swing and on the line swing. I only did an inning I think just for a sampling, foul ball swings included, results... foot in the box while making contact= 2 foot on the line while making contact= 9 foot out of the box while making contact= 1 While 9 were on the line a heck of a lot of them had over half there foot on the line. If you multiply that by 7 innings you can see everyone's very close to stepping out. Just saying maybe adding 6 inches to the front of the plate would help elevate the umpire having to call or not make the call IMO. Also I thought the pitchers could move back what 4,5 6 feet from the mound? So not sure adding 6 inches to the box is a death sentence for the pitchers, I don't pitch and don't have any desire to lol, the pitchers position for sure is a hot topic if someone pisses middle. lastly IMO batters positions themselves to the plate NOT THE FRONT OF THE BOX. Never seen anyone start with there front foot on the line? lol, but maybe I'm wrong. |

I think if I was an umpire I would let it go UNLESS it is stupid crazy the guy went a foot or more out of the box, then I would call it, but I think most umpires let barely out of the box go. last time I got called out for stepping out was because the dirty catcher said something to the ump after my first at bat, got called out next at bat! lol |

I would agree with that though. As for the elimination from a tourney because of umpires judgment call really sucks wow, and with video to boot. but yes who knows how many more times it was missed? Bruster55 heck I think it's just an email to SSUSA to get it on the agenda for the powers to be? B.J. thank you for the clarification on the rule, I have one more question though lol...can my back foot start out of the box with some part of my foot touching the line? I have a 3 step stride when hitting the ball and use every bit of the box, but the front of the box is always on my mind so I don't step out of it. Lastly lol I've seen a lot of the senior softball vids on You Tube, and it seems like almost everyone positions themselves in the middle or front of the mat as they line up for the strike zone to cover the front of the mat from a strike call, from that position it seem like everyone's stride takes them very close to stepping on if not stepping out as I can clearly see on every video I watch! maybe they could add maybe just 6 inches or so to the front line to eliminate this problem as almost everyone uses the mat as there starting position. Ok I will shut up now! |

I have a big stride when I swing, I have been called out for stepping out of the box, I get that but my question is...if when I plant my front foot and my heel or any part of my foot still touches the line when making contact...THEN my momentum carries my foot past the line AFTER contact is that an out? Pretty much grew up playing tourneys and it was never called almost like the front line didn't exist and in Senior ball it seems to be a issue, the boxes to me seem to vary from field to field especially at any of the BLD fields there GIGANTIC lol but in my opinion seems like they need to add a few more inches to the front of the plate because if you look at Dave's most recent video on You Tube it was a Chicago team and someone else just posted a few days ago, I'm looking at almost every player completely stepping out of the box and it was only called once in the video. not ranting just want to know about stepping on then out of the box and maybe some opions on what I said? Maskedman's post made me remember this question but didn't want to blow up his post. |

| Oct. 15, 2018 lowprofile | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: CHOPPED / TOMAHAWKED BALL Hey Nancy, I have played tourney ball my entire adult life, I'm surprised you have never in your time umpiring or playing never seen it done? When a batter swings down at a 45 deg angle with barely anything behind the swing to me that is a chopped ball. As I stated above it happened earlier this year in Vegas and it sure is funny how the guy never did it again because he knows it was an illegal swing and I complained about it, not WHINING just stating to the umpire a rule violation IMO. I agree with you though in the aspect of it not happening a lot or never in your case?, but it does from time to time happen. As for a slap hitter, that is different than a chopped batted ball, IMO a slap hitter is still taking a full swing or close to it and it's a more level swing as opposed to a chopped ball being beaten down deliberately into the ground. Believe me I never complain to the umpires, if I do it's a quick one time verbiage to the umpire and I'm done. only been hosed out of a game maybe twice in in over 30 years of playing. Anyways this is an adult conversation with our opinions to agree or disagree and I don't want you mad at me because you always have good opinions on here and always enjoy your comments. and lastly I just want to say you look wonderful today :) |
| Oct. 14, 2018 lowprofile | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: CHOPPED / TOMAHAWKED BALL My interpretation of a TOMAHAWKED ball is a ball being swung at above my head swinging vertically as opposed to horizontally. I see your quandary where both swings are going down towards the ground after contact with the ball. I think a chopped ball is a swing deliberately beating the ball into the ground, where as a tomahawked ball is more of a full swing and if you can make it go into the ground after contact then you got a good thing going and I'm not sure anyone would complain about that? my interpretation could be wrong, but it's probably an umpires judgement call. Happened to us in Vegas, guy clearly chopped the ball down it dribbled towards 3rd base for an easy base hit and I complained to the umpire to no avail as the umpire never called it, but I think because I complained the guy never did it again. |

LMBO Dave too funny! Statute of Limitations has run on that one! Seems like this is a big issue with a lot of people, Forgot26 I'm thinking there going to try to get a system in the future that will be able to post live updates or something comparable, but as we have all known the problem lies with the seeding games so the brackets can't just roll with wins and loses into the Saturday bracket. I guess you could post the seeding games after Fridays games are played I'm sure people would be happy with that? then re-post the bracketed games starting Saturday using some type of new computer program? not sure if that works? probably still have some issues regarding guaranteed games where teams get an extra game or games. so it is a problem that plagues SSUSA but my guess is it's on there bucket list of things to figure out. Dave just claim the 5th next time haha. |
| Oct. 5, 2018 lowprofile | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Clarify rule when runners are on base Just a thought about this, the line drawn adjacent to the bag sounds like a good idea, only because I feel having to stay on a bag (1st or 3rd) limits somewhat how you prepare yourself or how you stand for a line drive. If there was a line drawn you could better prepare your body in a way that YOU would feel comfortable to moving out of the way of a line drive rather than having one leg locked on a bag. Don't think that it would give that much of an advantage in advancing to the next base or home. just a thought. |
