| Dec. 14, 2007 stever | Topic: Players looking to join a team Discussion: Turning 60 in 08 in Arkansas We've got a good 60AAA team out of Tulsa (Oklahoma Turf Pro). Came in 3rd in Eastern Nationals and 4th in Winter Nationals. Need some outfielders next year. Plan on playing about every 3 to 4 weeks starting probably around late March. | Dec. 3, 2006 stever | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: 07 phoenix az. world There are several fields in Phoenix that have been used in the past. If you are trying to figure out where to book a hotel you probably should wait until they post the fields (if possible). The fields can be as much as 30 miles apart from one side of the valley to the other. For the most part they are on the west side (with the exception of Papago). Victory Lane is North of the 101 and west of I-17. Desert West is just north of I10 off of 75th ave. Rose Mofford is just off of I17 at Peoria. Encanto is way south of I10 off of 75th. Papago is in the east valley in Scottsdale. There is also a new complex in Peoria just off the 101 at Thunderbird they may use this year. All the fields are in generally good shape. All are 4-field complexes, except Victory Lane which is an 8 field complex. It is also privately owned and charges players and spectators to get in, so it may not be used. The remainder of the fields are owned by the various cities (Phoenix, Peoria, Glendale, etc). Hope this helps. |

We just take a vote of all the players regarding who they think was most valuable in the tournament. We do it by secret ballot so nobody feels pressured, but I think the players on any team know who was the most valuable during any specific tournament and you don't need to go into any "scientific" method to discover this. |
| Nov. 19, 2005 stever | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Compare the Senior Softball World Tourneys Looks like I may be an exception, but of the three we went to (SPA, LVSSA, and SSUSA) I liked SPA the least. The umpires we saw were poor, and twice (not once, but twice) they changed our game times but did not notify us. Plus, it seems politics are the most blantant in this tournament (although they exist at some level in all). Just my opinion. |
| Nov. 9, 2005 stever | Topic: Women's softball Discussion: Rankings All I said was they hit 9 OUT against us...3 were home runs, 4 were singles, 2 were foul over the fence. They are a great bunch of guys and I enjoy playing against them; but, they definitely have more power than most AAA teams. |

If they enforced a "one roster for all associations" rule they could be in violation of federal anti-trust regulations. I, for one, don't believe they need to have a "one roster" rule; however, I do believe they need to enforce the existing roster rules within each organization. Finally, it is sad that senior softball has become so corporate and that cheating has become so prevalent. This was supposed to be fun. |

| Aug. 7, 2005 stever | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Run Through Ask any middle infielder about the run through rule and I think you would find them in total agreement that it is a very bad concept. Run through will get more second basemen and shortstops hurt by collisions and will get runners hit by throws. The difference in the run through at second or third and the second home plate or first base is at second or third the runner is in the field of play and at first and home the runner is (or should be) in foul ground and not where fielders are normally making plays. |

All the suggestions that have been given can easily be subverted. The only way to stop abuse of the snowbird rule is to eliminate it entirely. The question then surfaces is whether or not we are eliminating someone's chance to play senior softball. Cheaters are cheaters. We shouldn't eliminate an honest player just because someone else is cheating. By the way, even without the snowbird rule a player can play for different teams in different states...legally. For example, a player who lives in Tennessee could play for a team in Missouri in SPA and a team in Georgia in SSUSA and another team in ISSA in North Carolina...all quite legally...due to the adjacent states rule (he has 9 states to choose from). |
| Jan. 28, 2005 stever | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Are new boundries that bad?? Mad Dog...interesting thought. Perhaps that would be a way of getting players into levels they should be. Joncon...making home runs outs is not meant to penalize...it is meant to keep the players whose egos want to make them big fish in small ponds from dropping down into brackets they don't belong; thus, spoiling the competition equality. It would be ideal if everyone would try and play at the proper level but, while I realize this may be difficult in some situations, the big problem is egos. Thus, the home run rule. If you think back to Mad Dog's suggestion, even back when we played in A, B, C, D, E, etc., there were different home run rules for the same reason. The big problem is to get more COMPETITIVE teams at the higher levels. Perhaps we have too many divisions and Major Plus should be eliminated; perhaps not. Perhaps there should be a Major Plus division for fully sponsored teams that doesn't recognize boundaries; perhaps not. Discussions are warrented; AD HOMINEM attacks are not. Discussions should center on what is best for Senior Softball; not what is best for an individual. I don't always agree with the association decisions; however, keep this in mind - even if you are the most pessimistic individual who sees conspiracy around every corner, the owners of those associations are not going to make decisions they believe will cost them players or teams. If teams boycot their associations because of decisions they will soon change those decisions. That isn't happening to any effective degree, though, so either the majority agrees with those decisons or is appathetic about them. In either case, the owners have no reason to change them so we have to decide whether or not to play. No one is making us play, so it is a personal decision. |

I might agree with you, Gary, if there was a more distinct demarcation line in the rules between the three divisions AND players (at least at the major level) were rated. If the major divisions allowed unlimited home runs and eliminated the 5 run rule; if the AAA level allowed one home run with all others being outs; and if the AA level allowed no home runs and all over the fence were outs, then, perhaps, players would gravitate toward the proper levels. However, under the current rules I believe the geographical restrictions should not apply to Major Plus because - face it - there are too few of us that can play at that level (myself included) to have meaningful tournaments. |

I DO NOT agree that we have the right to dictate rules because we pay association fees. If we don't like the rules, play in another organization. That being said, I am for keeping the Ultra II. I have yet to see ANY statistics that has shown an increase in injury from the Ultra II over other bats. Everything I have seen has been opinion and supposition. I believe the absence of proof, and the fact that the majority seems to overwhelminly enjoy the Ultra II's, should be considered in the decision. |
| Jan. 17, 2005 stever | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Combining Major & Major Plus Divisions I don't understand the reluctance to rate players (at least at the Major Plus level) and allow teams to use whoever they want. That is the way fast pitch used to be years ago. The Major Plus teams are, for the most part, well funded and, essentially, professionals. If we can't come to grips with this issue and realize there is a small percentage who the rest of us can't play with, then we are going to have (in my opinion) a bigger problem when the "trickle down" effect becomes real. |
| Jan. 15, 2005 stever | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: NOONE HAS BEEN BANNED FROM THIS SITE I, too, would like to thank Terry. It is impossible to please everyone. No matter what decision is made, someone is going to take issue with it and some people take very personal issues. I have had disagreements with some of his decisions in the past; but, the deisagreement was never taken to a personal level. I truly believe Terry is trying to do the best he can to balance all sides of issues and make the decision he feels is in the best interest of the organization and the majority. I run a business, too, and we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone who is trying to undermine our business. This is not a step to be taken lightly, and it would take a very serious circumstance to do this; however, no business owner should have to put up with anyone who is trying to destroy his business. I don't know if Terry has every banned anyone but I'm sure, based on my experiences with him, that he did so only as a last resort. To the people who are so vehemenly protesting the new rule: Let's try to work within the system and use reasonable discussion to get it changed; not AD HOMINEM attacks. I happen to agree that Major Plus rosters should be open to anyone; however, I also can see Terry's point. I believe, however, that if I am in disagreement with a policy or rule I have two courses of action: (1) work withn the system to try and get the decision makers to change their mind, or (2) go somewhere else. Any other action is childish, arrogant, and undefensible. I don't own the organization and, as much as I might want to play in it, I must abide by its rules or not play. |
