What wonderful weekend, got to see some great games and was fortunate to play in some. Sure would be nice for the youngster to see the beauty of the game. Professionalism, respect for the other players / game and sportmenship at its best was on display by all divisions. Umps / Staff did a very fine job. Oh! Got to finally meet Enstein

Bruce...Since you are ordering 95% humidity I will bring the balls we used in Pensacola. They should fly to 275...Good luck to all.

Lefty, A group of us hit twice a week and have the same results as you have described. The balls used in Atlanta were from different manufacturer's than those used in Pensacola, but the results were the same...See ya in Dalton and Galletin

Bruce, Good tournament in Marietta. However, it would be nice to play in our peer group (60 Major). Playing down is getting to be the norm for the team...Don't have the answers, but 3 ratings (AA, AAA and Major) would help.

Rod Sweet. I pitch in open leagues, over 30 outlaw league (You swing what you bring), over 55 and 60 when not playing the other positions. To me hitting middle has always been a part of the game. I sometimes throw a pitch a little outside hoping the batter will come middle for the double play. BTW...The pitching-box behind the rubber gives a good fielding pitcher time to pitch and break down for the batted ball. IMO, the pitcher can wear as much or little protection he / she desires. We don't need a PPR/DBO rule for the pitcher.

Nancy...Well said

Bruce, I second that emotion. Played in the 55 gold at Atlanta and our pitcher made numerous doubleplays...Of course he pitches for the comebackers. Don't need no stinkin PPR.

Joe as for the balls, they did not fly well...Tourney director had good balls, but high heat with extreme humidity and storing them in the sun kept them in the park for the most part. Playing 2nd and 3rd I could not keep my throwing hand dry. It was steel beach hot. LOL

Discussion: Screen Vice PPR

PPR = No, Pitching Screen = No. Below is a local senior league rule, " The pitching screen is MANDATORY. At least one-fourth of the pitcher's body must be behind the screen when the pitch is delivered (Umpire's Judgement), and he must step so that his body is completely protected by the screen as soon as the pitch is delieverd. Failure to comply with this rule will result in the Umpire calling an "illegal pitch (a ball) each occurance. If more than two such illegal pitches are thrown in the same inning, the team amanger will replace the pitcher". And now the end of the story. When the rule was enforced the pitcher's began to cry big time.

I donot like the screen for play.
In practice I get lazy cuz the screen is there and I just chuck and hide behind the screen.

We use the a screen for rec play and most of the pitchers DO NOT get behind the screen. Even Omar doesnot use the screen properly cuz he likes to field. So what is the purpose of the screen if you don't get behind it?

How much safety do you really want? I can save 35-50,000 lives a years. How you ask, reduce the speed limit to 25 mph. BTW, You can safe yourself right of business.
Here is an old suggestion, move the rubber to 60 feet with a 10 foot box and basepaths to 70 feet.

And today/tomorrow stop for a moment and remember all those who are serving and putting their lives at risk for this great country.

Bruce, We want our tourney to be about the players. Having scorekeepers and lighted boards is a nice touch that the players deserve.

Paco 13 Below is actual breakdown for a tourney in my area this year. BTW, we get no kickback from "Heads and Beds.

Income from 34 teams, 10,840.00

Expenses paid to the parent association
Team regisrtation, 34 teams at 25.00 = 850.00
Umpire registration, 350.00

Local organization expenses
Awards 2,000
Balls 700.00
Umpires 3,000
Scorekeepers 1,500
Grounds Crew 1,500
City Staff 1,500
Administration Fee 500.00
Misc 300
For a total of 11,900

As the money man for tournament that are scheduled for this fine area of the country I can tell you that the local tournament organization and officials DO NOT make any money. Most of the time we go into the hole for a few hundred or a thousand. For a 32 team tournament we will spent 3,000 for umps, 2,000 for scorekeepers, 1,500 for grounds crew and staff. Then there are cost for balls, score books, renting fields, awards, etc. Paying the local sports authority for their assistance and then paying the association (SPA, SSUSA, etc.) fee for teams that enter, Umpire certification fees and the list goes on...The parent association makes the $$$$...Very rarely do we see a profit...This is done for the love of the game...

Informal brainstorming comments on why this season is broken.

1. Limited number of major / major plus teams to play at tournaments.

2. Within age group / division to many sub groups, i.e., platium, gold and silver.

3. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to play

4. DBO and HR's that are outs.

Discussion: Demise of Senior Softball

Are we seeing the demise of senior softball? As a member of a tournament committee, as league chairperson for a few different leagues over the past few years I have seen fewer and fewer teams and players "getting into the game".

What are the causes? To many associations? To many modifications to the game. Tournament cost. Travel and lodging cost. Equipment cost. The senior rating system, (AA - Major plus). Should we go back and play age group vice rating? Is it just regional? I have my opinion, however, I want to read what the greatest minds in senior slowball have to say.

Played with oldest son and grandson in a wooden bat league. A wonderful time...Played with youngest son who crushed the ball but had the "Attitude" homers or nothing...Not so wonderful. My three sons and daughter continue to play but not with dad...To much pressure for them...LOL

Discussion: Question for those who pitch

JohnBob,

1. I wipe out the lines. Ump can't tell.
2. I cover the rubber with dirt since I like a smooth field.
3. When the rubber is covered with dirt I can place my foot 6-8 or more inches off of the rubber...Ump can't tell. LOL
4. I move around very frequently, front, back, left, right, etc.
5. After I release I breakdown to defend.
I do not like the PPR. As a professional safety person, It does nothing to protect the pitcher.
