Discussion: Question for those who pitch

During games I am very alert and aware where my pitches are going and get into the defensive position quickly. I will often move to my right if I believe the batter is a 5 hole hitter. I also have and will wear protective equipment depending on the environment, field, weather conditions and team being played.

PS...Watch 3 games Saturday in Montgomery, AL between 50 major and major plus teams and observed ONLY one ball through the pitchers box. The home run rule for those games were 2 homers and a single. Seems that those guys had great bat control.

Discussion: I have a simple question for those who have pitched.

IMO the risk is about the same.
I have pitched at all levels, still pitch in over 30 league during the week.
Pitch and play infield for a 60 major team.

DBO needs to be removed.

Discussion: Threw it at the wall and It went splat.........

Here's something else.
If I really want to win a game
I want my big guys buzzing the tower.
The more I can get the pitcher either worried
about himself or his pitches
the better for my chances of beating him.
It's smart and worth a couple of DBO's
especially in the first couple of innings. Joe, I can't believe that the game has become so important that you would ask your fellow players to hit at a pitcher. Joe, there is very little precision and accuracy from any batter (including Clatter), there is the general area that they hit to. This is not a game of darts as you well know ( broken limbs). The game should be played at the highest level of sportsmenship

As elder statesmen I cannot believe that seniors go at the middle to harm the pitcher. I pitch all the time in the local over 30 league and very rarely does the ball come middle. However,in certain situations I will pitch for the "comebacker". Just time to Play Ball!.

Discussion: Ed's Aluminum 65's will not play this year

Don and Bruce, thanks. I have passed the phone numbers to some of the players.

Armiho211, I was looking forward to playing and managing the team, however, the winter was not good to the team, injuries and sickness came into play and we were down to 10-11 men. Also thanks for the kind words.

Discussion: Papago & The DBO Pitcher's Box Rule

Played a few warm-up games yesterday with a mix of 50, 55, 60 and 65 year olds...First 3 innings played outfield, last 4innings I pitched, had 2 come at the box...made the play, no big thing.
Second game, it was decided to use a screen. I started at second, after 2 innings I was pitching again, however, I was lazy because of the screen and did not attempt to field the 10 balls that came back.(BTW, I can not stand the screen. Screen for practice, rec ball OK...NO screen for tourney ball IMO.

Discussion: I was killed last night.

While killing time in a used book store I spotted a 1962 softball book written by a PhD (M.E. Kneer) from the University of Illinois.

"The rules for fast and slow pitch vary concerning the use of masks and other protectors. These protectives devices are recommended for slow pitch but are not required".

Protective equipment is for those times when the unexpected occurs. Airbags, Faceshields, Body Armor, etc.

Dirty...I have seen many seniors wearing a Lacross helmet and some wearing a catchers protective helmet.

Discussion: team ratings?

Bruce, At one time TD's would submit an evaluation of teams to an association...This I know because as a tourney official I submitted team evaluations (my opinion) to the association that was blessing the tournament.

Discussion: acia berry

The acai berry is a grape-like fruit harvested from acai palms in the rainforests of South America. Acai berries are a good source of antioxidants, fiber and heart-healthy fats. Some manufacturers claim that products made from acai berries can help you lose weight, lower cholesterol and gain energy. Research on acai berries is limited, however, and these claims have not been proved. Still, fruit is an important part of a healthy diet. If you'd like to try acai berry products, check local health food or gourmet stores for acai berry juice or other acai berry products. Fresh acai berries spoil too quickly to be distributed widely

Discussion: Just a Little Safety to Consider.

Responsibility for Safety in most cases is a responsibility of the individual.

The hierarchy of safety;
1. Engineering the problem out of existence
2. Use administrative procedures
3. Require the use of Personnel Protective Equipment

Each team should have one member trained in basic first aid and CPR.

No games should be held when weather or field conditions are not adequate, lighting, darkness, lightning, wet fields, etc.

The playing fields should be inspected prior to games for holes, damage, stones, glass and other foreign objects. If corrections of unsafe conditions cannot be eliminated immediately contact the field umpire and or tourney director.

All team equipment should be stored within the team dugout, and not "in the field of play". Responsibility for keeping bats and loose equipment off the field of play should be that of a team coach or delegated player.

Only the active players, coaches, and umpires are permitted on the playing field. (Defensive players, runners on base, up batter, etc.).

On-deck batters are not permitted.

Equipment should be inspected regularly by the player.

Pitcher must wear head / face protection, mask, chest protector, shin guards and protective cup at all times (males) for all games. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Players who wear glasses shall wear "safety glasses".

Player must not wear watches, rings, pins or metallic items during games
.
All pre-game warm ups should be performed within the confines of the playing field and not within areas that are frequented by, and thus, endanger spectators (i.e., playing catch, pepper, swinging bats, etc.).

Discussion: Major + tournaments for 2009

Bruce, We are in the discussion stage of conducting a major /major plus tournament this coming August in Pensacola. Our conversation is centered around contacting each team and getting a loose committment before March 09 and then a firm committment by July 09. We also would extented a welcome to those AAA teams who aspire to play major / major plus. This tournament will be head to head, no gold, silver levels.

Discussion: Pitcher's Rule

IMO...Just a bad rule. As a pitcher I sometimes pitch outside to get the batter to come back middle. I also vacate the pitcher box by going to the left or right depending on where I think the batter is trying to place the ball... So as discussed in the above am I to assume the batter will be out because I purposely vacated the pitcher's box and his hit went middle? Crazy rule, needs to be eliminated.
