Discussion: Total Knee Replacement.."A Softball Athlete's 3 month Video Diary" Sm 165

Interesting to hear how others are getting by with their replacements. I got mine in December 2013, before all the new techniques and fitted knees. I got the old Stryker. My surgeon also tried to find a pin that was showing up on x-rays during the surgery. He pretty much turned my leg into hamburger. It was 2 months before I really got out of the recliner. They didn't start any pt until about a month and a half after the surgery. And it changed my knee enough to where I cannot run well any more where I used to be fast. I know it changed the angles because my old CTI brace would not even go on. Being in great condition saved me from a much longer recovery and I played Las Vegas in April that year, but was not running much. Hitting was great, though. I miss playing much outfield now, but learned to play some third base. Now, nearing 8 years later I can tell it is having issues. There are random pains in all parts of my leg.It feels loose at times, even though I doubt it really is. BUT, it has afforded me 8 more years to play this wonderful game and I am still thankful I did it. And the constant pain from before the surgery has not returned and that is a blessing.

I was looking at the scores and noticed the NorCal Reds won 6 consecutive ONE RUN GAMES in 65 M. That is remarkable, but they fell short in the final. Nice run, guys!

Last time we played at Shadow Rock, I was with the Bandits-60M. The wind was coming over the two top fields and swirling around down to the lower fields at up to 50 mph. Our pitcher was the hero as he only walked 10 per game in the 2 games we played. We received 20 walks each game for a total of 60 walks in 2 games. Dbax played in that one, I believe. My wife told me if we ever drew those fields again she was staying home from the tournament. I also remember a small mountain about 40 feet behind second base on one field on the top. I understand you have to use them, Dave. But they can be a nightmare.

Dave, I think my favorite one WAS when we worked together getting one of the Desperado coaches to believe they had moved the team up to major is my favorite. I will never forget your email to me. He was FURIOUS and pretty well cussed you out. I also enjoyed the 'Depends with a cup'. And Alan Tanner helped me with the 'curve', a curved bat. It's been fun.

Thanks, Dave. We all need some levity. Turning2, it's like fishing. Had I not replied innocently and given you more play, I may never have totally reeled you in..... thanks for being a good sport.

The mound and the 10 feet extra is far enough back. I love the idea of a high tech solution.

I have played for a long time, but NEVER thought I would see a demo like I did yesterday and it could work. I saw a demo on a remote-controlled softball. You all know computer chips are a dime a dozen any more. This remote-controlled softball has a built-in chip and the pitcher, pitching from the safety of a position 20 feet behind the mound and not worrying about ‘retreat’ from line drives, can program the ball with a simple arm movement simulating a pitch. The ball is placed on the ground at the distance the pitcher wishes to deliver the pitch from and will leave the mound just like a real pitch. The speed and direction will be controlled by the pitcher’s actual arm movement, just like in the ‘virtual’ world. The pitcher not only gets an extra 10-15 feet to react to a line drive, he is also already in the defensive position. This can revolutionize the game and safety for pitchers. I can’t wait to see it in action.

I will admit to being one of the loudest proponents of a rule that did not allow teams to go 'one up' with a home run in the bottom of the last inning to win a game. This effectively gave the home team an extra home run over the visiting team. But the rule was never intended to be one that does not allow a home team to win with a legal home run just because it was the 7th inning. If you have one left, you did it right.

Dave, for those of us that do not do Hatebook any more, could you post what LVSSA posted? Benji-a little story about drop dead time limits. Albuquerque, Senior Olympics a few years back had a drop dead time limit at 40 minutes. No game went over 4 innings and they rang a bell to signal the end of the game. Runner on third and no outs-the lead run. Fly ball to the outfield, runner tags and easily scores, EXCEPT the bell rang just before he crossed the scoring line. NO RUN!!!!!Tie game. That's a true drop dead time limit.

I still think that an automatic out call when this happens is the best call. It is NOT a bang bang play. Play comes to a complete stop for this to happen. At this moment, it should be up to the runner to make a move, not the defense. If he doesn't, an out is called.

In a sort of confirmation, this play happened in our first game at Victory Lane this week, AGAIN. The runner ran to the line knowing the rule and held his hand out to be tagged. The fielder obliged and the runner stepped his lead foot over the line. By rule he is safe, but the Umpire blew the call and then covered up the blown call by saying he was tagged before his foot touched down. The tag happened well after that foot was down. However, we AGAIN have the situation that happened that is not what softball is all about. A slight tweak to call this runner out is needed.

I understand it is a 'heads up' play by the runner. To actually defend it you need a defense ready for it to position guys at third and home before a third person goes for the tag. When the catcher has the ball is where this becomes a play that stops the game totally. The catcher cannot go for the tag without the runner going around him to be safe. If the third baseman is on third, you need to wait for a third person to get into the play to defense it. Having to stop a play to put a defense into position is not natural in softball. I feel it violates the 'spirit' of the rules that are put in for our safety, meaning the force at home, the use of a second plate or a line, the no tag rule at home, and the commit line. In a normal setting without those rules, a runner would end up in a rundown. Don't we try to not change the game as much as possible?

Discussion: Commit line abuse

I am looking for some input as to whether anyone else feels this way. I have watched another play become a problem with unintended consequences that I believe needs a bit of tweaking. I am talking about 'using' the 'commit line' when a runner is going home. I have watched this scenario play out now many times and it is clear to me that we need to address this issue. Of course, I believe the commit line is an excellent idea and needs to stay.
I'm sure you have figured out that I am talking about the runner that goes to the line, stands there until a defensive player moves towards him and then takes a quick step to cross it as the defensive player tags him. Of course, this makes him safe at home when he was dead to rights out. Or, the catcher, having the ball at home, moves to tag him and the runner goes around him and the catcher is unable to reverse to tag the plate for the out. The defense loses an out that they had in the bag. I believe this play violates the 'spirit' of the commit line rule. I have 2 suggestions to stop this.
1. If a runner employs that tactic by moving to the line and stopping and then stepping over the line when a defensive player moves to tag him as I mentioned, he is called out automatically. This makes it a judgement call, but it is very obvious when this happens. I have never seen it to be a bang-bang play. I do believe this is the best way to handle it. It would still be legal to run up to the line, reverse immediately, and go back to third as I have done a couple times to avoid the third to home double play.
2. Create a 5 foot 'tag zone' that exists for 5 feet on the home plate side of the commit line. Then the defensive player can continue the tag as the runner attempts to advance. One scenario that I can see with this is that a runner could run sideways along the commit line to avoid the tag and go around a catcher coming at him. This could be addressed by stating that any lateral movement to avoid a tag would result in the runner being called out. It would be like leaving the baseline to avoid a tag.
We have had this play twice in the last 3 weeks in our league and the same runner used it both times. But I have seen it in Reno also. This would also make it easier for umpires, I believe. I look forward to comments!

Discussion: How many Seniors have done this?

tg69 I also started playing in 1969 and am 68 and have also hit a home run in 7 decades. That came up in a conversation with a teammate at the beginning of 2020 when, after a couple beers, we got to talking about the number of decades we had played in.I bet there are not a lot of people that have done that either. Dbax-you didn't get to Major ++ though-lol. Doug, I wondered if maybe someone else off of Timberworks might have done it. I think we are the only ones that could have done it.
Has anyone else got any unusual things they have accomplished so we can get this year off on the right foot with some laughs???

Discussion: How many Seniors have done this?

We need some humor these days. In a conversation with one of my old Timberworks teammate, we got talking about the year we were Major ++. In the same conversation we talked about starting at lower levels and working up. I realized I have played all 5 levels.....AA, AAA, Major, Major + and Major ++. Has anyone else done that?

Discussion: 3 and 1: Take the pitch or swing away?

Bruce, I have had this discussion with so many people since we went to the 1-1 count. The first 2 pitches are balls. Now it's not 3-0, it's 3-1 and if you take that next pitch you are giving the advantage back to the pitcher at 3-2. No question in my mind. If you like it, swing.
