Discussion: Why Play Down?

Audie:
I applaud you for withdrawing from the Spring Nationals. The number of teams is declining rapidly and will continue to do so unless some way is implemented to balance the competition. Just paying an entry fee does not make a good tournament.

As for as playing down, I agree that some teams have a "win at any cost" mentality, but most of us just want to play the best teams in our Division and Age bracket.

A case in point of playing down is this past weekend's Spring Nationals. A 55 team was allowed to play in the elimination round with the 60 AAA. What kind of feeling do they have if they win the bracket? Even if they lose or keep another legit 60 team from winning, how can this satisfy them?

Discussion: TOC Qualifying Is A Joke!

My question is: Should age groups be mixed when qualifying for a berth for the TOC?

My Senior Moments team withdrew from the 60 AAA Spring Nationals after the seeding play due to the fact that a 55 year old team was allowed to play in the elimination round. The manager of the 55 team said they were already assured a spot in the TOC just by showing up.

If a 60 team is required to play a 55 team to qualify, why can't the 60 team add 55-year-old players to their roster? There is no logic to allowing age mingling when a TOC bid is at stake. I don't have a problem playing the younger teams in seeding, however, elimination games are for the true age bracket.

The competition did not factor in our decision to withdraw. We actually defeated both the other 60 AAA teams and lost the 55 team by only 1 run in the seeding games.

Although the other teams agreed that the policy was not logical, they decided to play. I congratulate the winner.

It is understandable why participation in SSUSA tournaments is down when you never know what to expect when you arrive to play. I know my Senior Moments team will not be participating if this policy and format continues.

If I am off base on this issue, please accept my apologies. But if you have encountered the same, please voice your opinion.
